Huriyah, billed as the oldest magazine for queer Muslims, which has been published since 2000, is shutting down for fiscal reasons. The L.A.-based magazine was distributed in 19 African and Middle Eastern countries in Arabic and, since 2000, in English on the web. A publisher has agreed to republish the archives in book form. I am sure a lot of their potential readership is two afraid to go anywhere near one of those magazines granted they could be put to death if there homosexuality is uncovered. With the internet spreading and the world getting closer together hopefully we will be able to reach some of the gays in the “coldest” corners of the world to let them know that there is nothing wrong with them and they are not alone. Some of us are so caught up in our own lives that we fail to look around the world and realize that a lot of peoples realities are a lot worse then rapid repeal of DADT and DOMA. Just a reminder to appreciate some of the good things that you have.

My guess is that a lot of their potential readership in repressive countries discovered proxy servers and VPNs (or other uses of encryption). They can’t stamp out encryption – it is critical for financial services and telecommuting for business use.
