Okay, just give the whole movie away, Benjamin Bratt! Teaming with his brother, writer-director Peter, the Law & Order actor delivers La Mission, the San Francisco-in-the-70s flick about a Latino-American dad (Bratt) who finds out his son is gay, kicks him out, drinks his sorrows away, and then finally comes to terms with his reality. Not everybody is impressed, and while the film, based on its physical setting, could be tied to today’s Prop 8 debate, at the very least it’s not one of those campy gay coming-of-age flicks — which, while entertaining, are not relatable. La Mission appears it just might be.

esta noche?!?!?! esta roaches!!!!
ive seen the movie and i have to say that it is one of the better “gay” movies. definitely worth watching. but it deals with more than just being young and gay. its about urban life. urban frisco life. its pretty realistic. great movie.

Really? The consensus was awful when it showed in SF and at Sundance.

“La Mission, the San Francisco-in-the-70s flick”
Nothing looked period about the trailer. I can see why the professionals panned it. The story may be good but the presentation lacks a lot.

Since there was a shot of the son sitting at a desk with a COMPUTER on it I don’t think the movie is set in the ’70’s.

i’ve seen the movie. it’ definitely not in the 70’s because at one point they’re talking about craigslist.
about the movie, i can say it’s a 4 stars (out of five) for gay standards and 3 stars for general standards (given the fact that gay movies usually suck). the acting is good (although erika alexander is not so great), the story is believable, but the problem is the lack of fluidity, continuity which shows that the director isn’t such a great one.
