SOUNDBITES — “I’ve looked in vain for public polling on how much the gay-marriage issue hurt Dede Scozzafava with GOP and independent voters [in her U.S. Congressional race]. So I commissioned a poll. The results should be ready to release by tomorrow. Here’s the key: The press (including conservatives) tend to lump gay marriage in with other ‘Christian right wing/social conservative’ issues, like abortion. But gay marriage is different because the majority of Americans oppose it. The majority of independents, as well as Republicans, and also a big chunk of Democrats oppose it. Voters don’t view opposition to gay marriage as evidence of ideological rigidity and extremism. They think it’s common sense.” —Maggie Gallagher, blaming the media for its gay marriage bias

Unfortunately, Maggie recognizes the prejudices of haterosexuals more than gay people who have been surrounded by them from birth. Gay people want to make excuses for haterosexuals as to why they are so hateful and so discriminatory. I don’t. Social hierarchies are a pillar of haterosexuality. Social hierarchies are discriminatory by nature. Heterosexuals think they are better than gay people and/or have a right to control gay people’s lives and therefore believe they deserve more rights. The thing that drives anti-gay bigotry is heterosexual exceptionalism and that doesn’t require a belief system.
Several states have had referendums on appealing abortion rights including South Carolina, the most religious state in the country. Every state has rejected appealing abortion rights. The same goes for creationism, religious denial of medical care and any other “religious” issue.

The majority of people may oppose gay marriage, but that doesn’t mean they agree with Christian fundamentalists who think gays are evil and shouldn’t exist or have rights. The majority of people don’t think gay people should be discriminated against and should have rights. They just mistakenly see marriage as only a religious thing. The majority do support civil unions.
@AlwaysGay. You generalize way too much. Not all heterosexual people think that way or hate gay people. And heterosexuality is no longer a hierarchy. In 2009, many heterosexuals have very equitable relationships. The days when men controlled everything is long over. I do think religion does drive the opposition to gay rights. Religious people can point to Leviticus to say being gay is wrong. There’s no specific part of the Bible anyone can point to that is against abortion or denial of medical care.

The difference between abortion and the gay marriage issue is momentum. Voters in their 20s are just as likely to be divided prolife/prochoice as voters in their 50’s. But on gay marriage among voters in their 20’s you’ll find that pro-equality voters outnumber their opponents 2:1… tick tock Maggie.

gay marriage is different because the majority of Americans oppose it

LOL. A moral issue is “different” because a majority of Americans oppose it. A majority of Americans are in favor of divorce laws – I wonder how “key” she thinks that is.
So, she’s got a popular issue to harpoon and ride, while she makes $200K/yr or whatever and gets a limelight. Zipzee for her.

“Wherever, therefore, it has been established that it is shameful to be involved in sexual relationships with men, this is due to evil on the part of the legislators, and to despotism on the part of the rulers, and to cowardice on the part of the governed. ” –Plato
Say it loud and proud, haterosexuals!
