That time Jim Carrey played a muscle daddy top in a gay rom-com

Jim Carrey recently made headlines when he announced he was quitting acting while promoting his new film Sonic The Hedgehog 2.

“I’m retiring,” the 60-year-old told Access Hollywood. “I’m being fairly serious. It depends, if the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road, but I’m taking a break.”

Carrey, who plays Dr. Robotnik in the new action-adventure comedy based on Sega’s video game franchise, added, “I really like my quiet life and I really like putting paint on canvas and I really love my spiritual life and I feel like, and this is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists, I have enough. I’ve done enough. I am enough.”

The thought of Carrey retiring from Hollywood got us reminiscing about some of his past movies, including the 2009 same-sex romantic comedy I Love You Phillip Morris.

Carrey played muscle daddy top Steven Jay Russell, the real-life con artist who fell in love with his fellow inmate, Phillip Morris (Ewan McGregor), and escaped from prison to be with him.

The film was adapted from the 2003 book I Love You Phillip Morris: A True Story of Life, Love, and Prison Breaks by Steve McVicker and contains a gay sex scene in which Carrey can be seen pounding actor Donovan Guidry from behind.

There wasn’t any actual nudity, but the language and, um, intense thrusting was certainly NSFW by 2009 standards. “I’m gonna c*m! I’m gonna c*m!” Carrey screamed. To which, Guidy replied: “Do it, man! C*m in my a**!”

I Love You Phillip Morris had trouble finding a U.S. distributor due to its explicit gay sexual content and needed to be re-edited before it was eventually given a limited theatrical release. It went on to gross $20 million at the box office.
