Backing.

Human Rights Campaign president Joe Solmonese yesterday released a list of 14 Senatorial candidates whom they're backing. It's worth noting that HRC did not endorse North Carolina-based homo-politico Jim Neal, who's hoping to get the Democratic nomination over Kay Hagan, a veteran politician. HRC apparently doesn't know which way to lean, so they're just sitting on their haunches. They wouldn't want to rock the boat, of course… [NY Blade]

Would someone please explain to me exactly what HRC does aside from giving awards to straight people and throw expensive fundraisers for rich gay non-trans folks?

Offhand, it's clear that the fact of anyone's being gay or trans has no relationship with thier support for gay issues or their likelihood for getting the job done in promoting gay interests.
I've run into plenty of sleazy gay people who can't be relied on to stand up for their own kind when power or money are on the line.
It's naive to assume that the right straight person won't do the job better.
I don't know particulars about the situation so it's hard just to guess.
