Reporter: Palin Sought Gay Book Ban

Republican running mate Sarah Palin says she’s a reformer, but of what sort we cannot say…

According to sources in Wasilla, Alaska, Palin tried to use her sway as mayor to censor the local library. Though then-librarian Mary Ellen Baker tells ABC News Palin didn’t specifically ask her to censor any specific titles, journalist Paul Stuart attests that Baker, who was later fired, had named names. And – surprise! – one of the books had gay themes:

Stuart told PolitiFact that in a conversation with [Baker] after his article ran, she listed three titles. He said he could recall only two, and initially said they were I Told My Parents I’m Gay and I Asked My Sister. We looked for these titles; they don’t appear to exist.

“Mary Ellen told me that Palin asked her directly to remove these books from the shelves,” Stuart said. “She refused.”

Asked later if the first book could have been Pastor, I am Gay, a controversial book written by a pastor who lives just outside Wasilla, Stuart said that was it.

Howard Bess, author of Pastor, I am Gay and former pastor of Church of the Covenant in nearby Palmer, recalls that his book challenging Christians to re-examine their ideas about and prejudices against gays and lesbians was not well received in Wasilla when it was published in 1995 — the year before Palin was elected mayor.

Coincidentally enough, Palin’s church at the time, Wasilla Assembly of God, had been campaigning against Bess’ book.

These details suggest two things. One, Palin’s not so clear on that whole church, state separation. And, two, Palin’s easily – and irresponsibly – swayed by outside forces, not a good trait for a politician, national or otherwise.

Quoting a person who admits he can’t remember the conversation? Nice to see such journalistic integrity.

Also, as for your own suppositions: 1) can’t separate church and state; 2) easily swayed by outside forces — the first one follows (even accounting for the faulty information) but the second one is not necessarily true even if this piece were accurate. You can’t say that shes easily swayed by outside forces; nothing validates that claim. Or, alternative, every politician who takes a stand (Gov. Peterson, for example) is easily swayed by outside forces.

      Talk about sensational journalism…

      STORY is spreading (0.00 / 0)
To Even Mention Book Banning is Sarah Palin at Her Dangerous Worst
“The mere suggestion of book-banning should set off alarm bells of epic proportion across the country.

The fact that Sarah Palin, the Republican would-be veep, approached Wasilla’s librarian with a ‘how would you react to banning books?’ question should not only give us all pause, but make us run shrieking in alarm to editorial boards in every nook and cranny of this country.

Besides that question being pulled out of her ass, it didn’t come from nowhere”
      http://www.opednews.com/maxwri
      Palin’s Book-banning Efforts
“. But as long as McCain aides are talking about this issue, maybe they can answer a couple of additional questions, such as, “Why did Palin try to fire the librarian in the first place?” Or how about, “Why did Palin broach the subject of book-banning if she had no intention of trying to ban books?” From CBS

I thought McCain needed to pee in a drug test cup for selecting Palin, NOW I want every white woman voter in America who is fascinated with this UNSTABLE Christian Reich woman they’ve known for 2 seconds and ONE speech, to pee in a drug test cup before voting.
      THIS IS INSANE!
I hope Jewish voters are watching this garbage, Palin was UNQUALIFIED to be a MAYOR, she abused that power immediately, then as Governor she used her influence to strike out in a personal vendetta, and used her husband and co-workers for this scheme…now you want to give her CHENEY’S POWER with an old fool sitting in the oval office who doesn’t know how many houses he OWNS?

CHRIST if Bush’s second term armed this queer, Palin makes me want a bunker and grenades.

It’s better to stick to the facts because quoting 3rd party gossip only helps them muddy the waters concerning the truth.

It is documented that she tried to censor books, and tried to fire the librarian when she refused, but no books where specifically mentioned.
It’s documented she charged her state a $60 per diem to stay at home.
It’s documented she charged her state $17,000 to fly her family around.
It’s documented she supported the “bridge” before it came under public scrutiny and then she was against it… but kept the money.
It’s documented she hired lobbyists to grab as much fed money for Wasilla as she could get even though Alaska has a budget surplus.
It’s documented when she took office as mayor Wasilla had no debt, but left office with 22 million dollars in debt.
I could go on, but you get the idea…
Stick to the dozens of things we know she’s done, not hearsay and gossip.

Republican media operatives circulated a long list of books supposedly ‘banned’ by Palin. The list was patently false, and included books published well after Palin’s tenure as mayor of Wasilla.

The effect of that GOP operation was to throw people off the notion that Palin had at one time inquired about censorship and had asked for the librarian’s resignation. Those two simple facts are not in dispute by anyone.

I’m not surprised to find out that Palin made specific requests for books to be banned, and I think the GOP already knew she had a strong homophobic streak. They wanted to cover for her, by circulating that larger, false list.

Too bad the former librarian isn’t talking (in public).

      Mr. Factcheck and Mr. Lake;

Factcheck.org has proven itself, through internal contradictions, to be reckless in its use of logic, and is just as prone to ‘inventing’ the ‘facts’ as the MSM. And, just how are we going to define “well-proven”? It’s a bit hypocritical to know that you can’t believe everything you read, and then selectively believe the so-called ‘debunkers’. Is it because you prefer the cynicism of the conservatives to the skepticism of the progressives?

Peter Lake–it’s actually not a well proven lie that Sarah Palin tried banning books. What was exaggerated was the lengths in which Sarah Palin went to ban these books. She did, however, make several phone calls to the library and the librarian. This has not been contested. That fact alone, is frightening enough.

ABC News has an in-depth story (published 9/10) about what happened. It is more informative than the Newsweek fact check (referenced in a comment). Though it can not say for certain whether she was after gay titles or not, what is not contested is that her church is no friend to gay people. Her church at the time of the librarian being fired was actively campaigning to remove the gay affirmative book “Pastor I Am Gay” from local bookstores. The book’s author is Pastor Howard Bess, of the Church of the Covenant in nearby Palmer, Alaska. Palin’s church actively advocates “praying away the gay,” and is sponsoring a Focus on the Family conference that promises to convert gays into heterosexuals through the power of prayer.

The Republican blog patrol must be working overtime trying to cover her ass. Everytime I pull up a blog critical of Palin there’s a comment to “check the facts.” If one minute detail is incorrect that does not mean the complete story is a fabrication. The Republican Party has been routinely practicing a policy of misinformation, for years, and apparently are not planning to change tactics anytime soon. One would hope they would learn merely repeating the lie over and over, does not make it truth.

Sarah Palin is the ultimate wedge issue in this election of the culural wars. Some people live life by walking down a garden path on the road to serfdom, others ask questions.

Palin is a figure in this war, as is Obama – the election is about these two polar opposites. If Palin is elected, the garden path is set, and it goes nowhere.

But people, a lot of americans anyway, are comfortable with Palin, others are not. This culture war however will not be won or lost with Palin or Obama, but with DEMOGRAPHICS!

Think it over… and think what the USA will “look” like in 25 years.

. . . how about a book (and movie) Palin would hate?

** Welcome to “The Handmaid’s Tale”, America **

McCain is a dupe. Now he’s just along for a ride into the abyss of fundamentalist political ideology, dominionism.

Palin comes “wrapped in the flag, carrying a cross.” She is exactly the gender traitor dominionists need to create the xian Iran of their dreams, under xian imams, xian enforcers of morals.

Have you ever read or ever viewed The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood? A one sentence synopsis: “In a dystopicly polluted right-wing religious tyranny, a young woman is put in sexual slavery on account of her now rare fertility.” IMDb.com/title/tt0099731

Atwood depicts a society in which women have been stripped of all rights in a fragment of a failed America, known as Gilead, a country controlled by christian fundamentalist terrorists and their transnational corporate overlords.

Obama PACs should buy The Handmaid’s Tale, novel and DVD, by the box load and hand copies to every media person they know. Get TV outlets to broadcast it. If necessary buy time to show The Handmaid’s Tale in critical markets.

Palin emerges as a puritanical atavism directly from Atwood’s dystopia. She belongs to an all-too-possible future we must avert.

Mandy, the salient facts are not in dispute. Palin sounded the librarian out on banning books. The librarian refused in no uncertain terms. Palin then fired the librarian because the mayor felt that she was inadequately loyal. The librarian was rehired only because town residents defended her and Palin caved on an indefensible position.

Palin is a sexier version of Monica Goodling, an underqualified Republican who seems genuinely not to understand that there are legal limits to her power.

To commenter #1 (FactCheck): Sorry, you’re still wrong. Try not to gloat with homophobic schoolyard taunts like “So sorry, you lose, Queer-ty…” when you don’t know what you’re talking about. If you read the whole FactCheck piece instead of just the first page, you’ll see that Palin did indeed “inquire” twice about the procedure for getting specific books removed from the library. I’ll leave it to you to try to defend the position that someone who comes into office and immediately “inquires” about banning a book her church just happens to be campaigning against is just pursuing a neutral, professional line of hypothetical information-gathering. FactCheck, by the way, deserves to be taken down a peg for its misleading — dare I say, biased-looking — headings in that article like “No To Creationism In Schools”, when it goes on to say that, in the interests of “healthy debate”, she advocated teaching creationism alongside evolution in schools — sure, THAT’S not promoting creationism is schools! (Might as well teach Nazi Aryan Nation theories alongside actual sociology, in that case, since “healthy debate is so important”.)

All politicians stretch the truth, massage it into the best fit with their message. But, let’s face it, John McCain is running a campaign almost entirely based on straight up lies. Not just exaggerations or half truths but the sort of straight up, up-is-down mind-blowers we’ve become so accustomed to from the current occupants of the White House. And today McCain comes out with this rancid, race-baiting ad based on another lie…. There’s clearly no level of sleaze this guy won’t stoop to to win this election.

And let’s be frank. He might win it…. But what is already apparent is that John McCain is running the sleaziest, most dishonest and race-baiting campaign of our lifetimes. So let’s stopped being shocked and awed by every new example of it. It is undignified. What can we do? We’ve got a dangerously reckless contender for the presidency and a vice presidential candidate who distinguished herself by abuse of office even on the comparatively small political stage of Alaska. They’ve both embraced a level of dishonesty that disqualifies them for high office. Democrats owe it to the country to make clear who these people are. No apologies or excuses.

Back in 2000, after John McCain lost his mostly honorable campaign for the Republican presidential nomination, he went about apologizing to journalists–including me–for his most obvious mis-step: his support for keeping the confederate flag on the state house.

Now he is responsible for one of the sleaziest ads I’ve ever seen in presidential politics, so sleazy that I won’t abet its spread by linking to it, but here’s the McClatchy fact check.

I just can’t wait for the moment when John McCain–contrite and suddenly honorable again in victory or defeat–talks about how things got a little out of control in the passion of the moment. Talk about putting lipstick on a pig.

Well pork loving Palin has gotten something right when she called herself a pitbull in lipstick.

Rove, Schmidt, McCain et al are treating her exactly like a dog. They did their homework and selected her for the “right” bloodlines- white, pro life, NRA, church going, family, working mom, hockey mom.

Now they have entered her in the big show. So where is Sarah now? Caged til the big day. Meanwhile she is being primped and preened by her “handlers”. And when they take her out for a bit, they keep her on a very short leash. Hush Sarah, Don’t speak! Thats a good girl. You be good and daddy will let you be the VICE president if we win.

If SHE wins the big show, they will parade our pork loving gal around the ring, and cast her aside in a heartbeat. All the adulation will go to her handlers and owners, Rove, Schmidt and JSM. A few quick pats on the head and she will be gone in a flash. She served her purpose well and now they will send her out to that big backyard of Alaska. Only to return, in John McCains word’s, for funerals, since that is all he thinks a VP is good for. Because you see,

Is there any concrete evidence that Palin attempted the bans in question, beyond the hearsay evidence of the librarian in question?

Two news sources have reported that the librarian is a Democrat, which makes the story even more suspect.

Something tells me that if a Republican librarian had reported that Barack Obama attempted to ban books with gay themes, the testimony wouldn’t be embraced so readily.

You people trying to defend Palin are simpletons..she is, indeed, the ultimate cultural wedge issue. Her church believes in the rapture, that you can pray being gay away, and you should teach creationism as a valid theory side-by-side with evolution..

And Obama’s church believes that God “Damned” America, that the 9/11 attacks were justifiable “chickens coming home to roost” for racism, and that Hillary Clinton is racist.

Now that we have that equally irrelevant information out of the way, can we PLEASE return to a discussion of the actual ISSUES, rather than the ridiculous innuendo and wink-and-nod bullshit that characterizes Republicrat and Demopublican partisanship?

      Thanks.

She did not demand that books be banned from the Wasilla library. Some of the books on a widely circulated list were not even in print at the time. The librarian has said Palin asked a “What if?” question, but the librarian continued in her job through most of Palin’s first term.

She didn’t ask about banning books but she did inquire what would happen if she tried to ban some books. Not a crime but makes you think what is going on in her mind. Afterall theRepugs and McCaininites want us to be one nation, one color, one religion and read one book.
Actually the repugs love all these scandals they can cry “your picking on her she is a mother of 5 afterall and don’t forget the special needs baby” and not really have to address all the contradictions John I’LL SAY ANYTHING TO BECOME PRES McCain has on record.

“Log Cabin Republicans is a grassroots organization and our membership overwhelmingly supports endorsing Sen. McCain,” said Log Cabin Board Chairman Pete Kingma. “Our board and staff members have spent recent months getting input and feedback from our members. The consensus among our members is strongly in favor of an endorsement because of his inclusive record. Our members also support him because he’s a maverick; a trait most recently on display with his decision to select Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate

Also she feels that The Iraq War is God’s war and it’s God’s will for us to win this war….Really? those are quotes from Palins’s mouth Brian.
Now why don’t you quote a racist statement from Obama’s mouth instead of Wright’s.

All this shit about Jeremiah Wright and being in the church for 20 yrs BLAH BLAH.
OK I didn’t agree with what Wright said.
But that is his Pastor whom he can and has detach himself from.

And it’s obvious on here some white Gays (not many) do not like Obama because of race and to justify it they bring up Wright. .

Okay so Brian what about you who sat in your home all your life and heard your Parents and Grandparents scream racial epithets about Blacks and others???????

I don’t see how any Gay person can approve of Sarah Palin. This is outrageous, though totally expected. But does it help or hurt to point this out!! Every gay Republican doesn’t care, because he’s obviously voting pure pocket book. And every other gay is voting his gay conscience for Obama already. The American mob will LIKE the fact that Palin wanted to ban gay books! They love Palin for being so in your face about her theocratic fascism, the same way the German mob was thrilled by Hitler for screaming their hatred of Jews right out loud!

      AND
He selects someone with ZERO National Affairs credentials, who needed 5 colleges in 6 years to get a Journalism degree, will impose her bizarre fringe Christian Reich sect which preaches Creationism, rapture, and Jews for Jesus and “curing Homosexuals, she abused her powers of governor in a personal vendetta, LIES constantly, and wanted to ban books so much she fired the librarian who DEFIED her.and she will impose her EXTREMIST anti-CHOICE views on every American woman…without even the limitations of women raped or incest victims.

      CHURCHILL-Y

On such a solemn day as today I want to remind all my GLBT brothers and sisters of a few words:

““The government gives them the drugs, builds bigger prisons, passes a three-strike law and then wants us to sing ‘God Bless America.’ No, no, no, God damn America, that’s in the Bible for killing innocent people,” he said in a 2003 sermon. “God damn America for treating our citizens as less than human. God damn America for as long as she acts like she is God and she is supreme.”

In addition to damning America, he told his congregation on the Sunday after Sept. 11, 2001 that the United States had brought on al Qaeda’s attacks because of its own terrorism.
“We bombed Hiroshima, we bombed Nagasaki, and we nuked far more than the thousands in New York and the Pentagon, and we never batted an eye,” Rev. Wright said in a sermon on Sept. 16, 2001.

“We have supported state terrorism against the Palestinians and black South Africans, and now we are indignant because the stuff we have done overseas is now brought right back to our own front yards. America’s chickens are coming home to roost,” he told his congregation.”

As we vow to never forget the suffering and hurt that has never left the hearts of many of us(me included) lets not also forget who sat for twenty years on the pews of this hateful un-American individual who spewed such venom in the aftermath of such a heinous crime committed against our innocent brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers, children, friends, American family.

It is hard to believe no one pointed this out, but there IS a HUGE difference when an average person asks about banning books and the MAYOR asks. Just like if a co-worker asks you a personal question and your boss asks. Or the boss above him/her. So, whether or not Sarah P actually banned books or asked about them is not the main issue. It is her mindset.

The VERY PEOPLE killed by terrorists included MANY of OUR OWN.
A lesbian firefighter died when the WTC collapsed.
A gay Fire Dept Chaplin died giving Last Rites when the towers fell.
A gay man joined those on Flight 93 who died rather than let the plane hit the White House or Congress.

btw…ONLY LGBT survivors had to FIGHT for their fair share of funds raised for the loss of their spouses.

You give gays a bad name. First of all there was no list, because she was going over the Alaska rules with all of them the first time with questions. After Emmons and Ira got all butch and took it out of the element, she went back to talk to her about that, instead of losing it on her in public (her mistake, I would’ve stomped her)… not banning books on a list that’s friggin’ fake. Harry Potter wasn’t even out. Did you not recognize the list as the same ACLU crap floating on the nets for years generic?

How the hell did we get so dumb… unbelievable.

Those are some jealous, hating cows with cabin fever… I mean, who doesn’t want attention?

Funny how she still worked there after.

To the guy above, that AIP crap is BS as well… when the hell will people do research instead of believing any Tom, Dick and Harry?

To all here, I suggest you may be surprised (actually, the republicans will be), when you look at her record re: gay issues.

Why any gay man or woman would contemplate voting for a politician who does not support equality for gay people is beyond comprehension. Most straight people here wouldn’t contemplate it.

Queerty has it right. FactCheck doesn’t have the entire story. I am a member of Church of the Covenant in Palmer. It is church history that Sarah Palin tried to get Howard’s book banned from the Wasilla library. The entire scope of the incident cannot be fully appreciated by merely reading what was printed in the newspapers at the time. Howard was also fired from his long running newspaper column and our welcoming and affirming church severely criticized. I cannot speak for other church members but it is my belief that the book banning incident is a true reflection of Sarah Palin’s beliefs and motives. Are gay/lesbian/transgender organizations worried about Palin,…they should be.

“PRAY AWAY GAYS?” Should I sit in the back of the bus too?

Sarah Palin’s views on homsexuality are offensive. US citizens were gaining awareness and moving in a direction of acceptance.Truth is, no one, not even Sarah Palin can explain where homosexuality stems from. With that in mind, if it is derived from parental, environmental or genetic influences, how can one be “transformed” later in life? If one could prove these natural emotions were a result of human biology, Sarah Palin’s theory to “transform” insinuates she can override genetics. Otherwise, her logic blames society for the outcome, not individuals. Therefore, her solution suggests, “fixing” problems caused by those who created them.

I wonder if she had a gay, bi-sexual or bi-curious child, if they too would be enrolled in her “school of conversion?”

      America represents freedom.
Marriage is not a luxury-It is a human right.

As a woman, in particular, she should understand discrimination and fight for equality in this country.

Her glasses are as transparent as her lack of international foreign policy experience and human compassion.
