We’ve got to say, we’re loving the backlash over Indiana’s recently signed antigay “religious freedom law,” and now Audra McDonald and Miley Cyrus have thrown in their two cents (four cents, collectively). Here’s hoping public outcry inspires lawmakers around the country to think twice before enacting similar legislature.
Miley took a direct approach, calling Indiana Governor what we’re all thinking: an asshole.
Here’s what she posted to Instagram:
Broadway legend Aurdra McDonald posted the following rant on Twitter, which really puts this ridiculous law into perspective:
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
.@GovPenceIN Some in my band are gay & we have 2 gigs in your state next month. Should we call ahead to make sure the hotel accepts us all?
— Audra McDonald (@AudraEqualityMc) March 26, 2015
.@GovPenceIN or could you maybe send us a list of where its okay for us to go? Might the law apply to me?(I’m black).
— Audra McDonald (@AudraEqualityMc) March 26, 2015
.@GovPenceIN or maybe I should fire my gay band members just to be on the safe side.
— Audra McDonald (@AudraEqualityMc) March 26, 2015
.@GovPenceIN Or MAYBE…we need to stick to singing in states that don’t legislate hate?
— Audra McDonald (@AudraEqualityMc) March 26, 2015
.@GovPenceIN Or MAYBE I donate the money I make in your state while Im there to organizations that will combat your hateful legislation.
— Audra McDonald (@AudraEqualityMc) March 26, 2015
.@GovPenceIN Yep. That’s what I’ll do. Hey @HRC get ready for a little money coming your way from Indiana via me to you! Have at it!
— Audra McDonald (@AudraEqualityMc) March 26, 2015
For the record, we think you’re an asshole too, Gov. Pence.

Love ’em both.
Low Country Boy
As much as I favor boycotting the state entirely, I think Audra McDonald’s approach is even better. Take their money and funnel it back into organizations that will bring about a change to the law. Sweet irony!

Cyrus supported gay marriage years ago and when she was attacked for it, told those fans to take a hike, she didn’t want bigots for fans. Have always had a soft spot for her since then.
