We never expected this entire Mark Foley scandal to have such a wide wake, but it seems that it could take down not only Foley himself and key members of the Republican party, but now the FBI.
When Republican leaders first heard of Foley’s dubious email with a 16-year old former Congressional page, they passed the emails on to the FBI. Seeing no criminal wrong-doing in those original emails, the FBI simply ignored the matter.
The Washington Post reports:
An FBI official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing, said the field office concluded that the e-mails “did not rise to the level of criminal activity.” The bureau announced Sunday that it would begin a preliminary investigation into Foley’s more explicit electronic exchanges with teenagers.
Yeah, we bet they are. What we don’t understand is why no one thought the original correspondence may be indicative of a pattern. Oh, right, they were trying to protect one of their own. Well, who’s going to protect them now?
