“I realized that being gay and growing up around people and in a culture where that wasn’t celebrated – where it was reviled, in many ways – had an impact on me. Happy as I am, I’m still working out the fear I grew up with: that by revealing who I really am, I will somehow lose the love of the people who are important to me. This story wasn’t a direct reflection of my time, and things have changed rapidly for gay people over the last couple of decades, but even now, there’s that residual.”Actor Jim Parsons, speaking to Attitude magazine about growing up in a homophobic culture. Parsons says the feeling helped him understand the self-loating characters in The Boys in the Band, his new Netflix film.

Agreed.

we already know that- instead of saying that to a gay publication like Attitude- say it to People Magazine.

Very nice.

You could tell Parsons had that fear. He struggled so hard to avoid thanking his partner, etc. And it wasn’t lost on me that as soon as Parsons came out publicly his show felt the need to give him a girlfriend.
I’m glad he feels more comfortable now, and additionally he has produced some stuff on TV and movies that has LGBTQ storylines. So good for him!

I think Amy coming along had more to do with the writers needing to do something with Sheldon other than having him be a a#$hole all the time. Howard and Leonard already had girlfriends so it was logical for them to continue that trend. You can only mine the four lonely nerds shtick for so long. After a while it gets pathetic like Raj’s selective mutism, or his being alone for most of the series.

The man speaks the truth! I am in my late 60’s and had people around me growing up that really did not care who you slept with but of course there are always some as*holes around. As I got older and moved out into the world I ran into these people a lot more often. All ages and all backgrounds themselves!
