Phil Robertson Blasts Gay Marriage At Iowa Ted Cruz Event

Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson doubled down on antigay bigotry at an event for Ted Cruz in Iowa over the weekend.

Remember when Duck Dynasty was an innocuous and controversy free reality show on A&E? Yeah, neither do we. Since that infamous GQ article from January 2014, Robertson and crew have become darlings of the far right while destroying the Duck Dynasty brand with homophobia, and his remarks over the weekend were no different.

Actually — scratch that — his remarks in Iowa City were as batsh*t crazy as ever:

“When a fellow like me looks at the landscape and sees the depravity, the perversion — redefining marriage and telling us that marriage is not between a man and a woman? Come on Iowa! It is nonsense. It is evil. It’s wicked. It’s sinful. They want us to swallow it, you say. We have to run this bunch out of Washington, D.C. We have to rid the earth of them. Get them out of there.”

“Rid the earth of them?” Yikes.

Cruz is running slightly behind Donald Trump in Iowa, which means both will be pandering more to the far right as votes are finally cast. Cruz didn’t add to Robertson’s remarks when he took the stage, but he did praise Robertson’s “voice of truth.”

Unfortunately for the GOP, short-term pandering is unlikely to have long-term positive results for the party, since the kind of backwards rhetoric Robertson spouts is a major turnoff to the independents and moderates who will decide the election.

If you ask us, Robertson needs to get away from politics and back to reality TV where he belongs, and he can take Trump with him.
