I would not have changed it, but that’s their choice. Our intention was always coming from a place of love. On paper, you cannot read intention, so it was actually hurtful. First of all, drag is dangerous. We are making fun of everything. But when someone doesn’t get the joke or feels offended by it, it’s a lose-lose situation, because you can’t explain a joke. It isn’t funny if you explain it.”
— Mama Ru speaking to The Guardian about the controversial decision to bow to pressure from aggressive trans activists such as former Advocate writer Parker Molloy and remove the popular catch-phrase “You’ve got she-mail” from the hit reality series RuPaul’s Drag Race
Alexis Barros
It was over kill and completely unnecessary to remove “she-mail”!
Cam
And yet look at what happened to the Activist who went after RuPaul.
She has been fired from her jobs because of threats, and being a danger to others. Logo never bothered to look into it, just immediately turned on RuPaul, and now this year they seem to have butchered Ru’s show, taking Untucked off TV to boost their online presence and having producers interfering in the choices of the queens.
Paco
I love how RuPaul has remained classy about the controversy. I’ve always liked him.
Jason Starr- Nolan
What! Are they serious! What a bunch of tossers! How is that offensive? OMG! Ridiculous!
Giancarlo85
Molloy is someone who even viciously attacks other trans people and told them to go drink bleach. Not someone that should be listened to. Molloy pretty much is a nobody right now and is always lashing out because nobody listens to her anymore.
Larry Desolier
Yes tired of Queens telling me how to think i.e. political correctness Homonormativity debate… about masculine acting or feminine acting… for every type of man there is will be every type of gay man.
YouGoGurl
@Alexis Barros: Agreed!
Kevin Stoneking
This is old news.
Kevin Stoneking
And she wasn’t “Forced” to do anything.
spiffy
Did Ru mean Logo pressured the drop or World Of Wonder? Either way, she’s the executive producer, you’d think she has the final say when it comes to her show. But I do have to reluctantly agree with the last part of her quote.
@Cam: Do the producers (other than Ru) have that much power in this instance though? I think RuPaul already made up her mind who the winner was without help… When she repeated “Fashion Edition” over and over again in the penultimate episode, I knew it wasn’t going to be The Minj.
aliengod
Please! LGB has got to drop the T. It’s got nothing to do with us and it’s hijacked our cause.
Roland Hamburger
The producers changed everything after season 5
Dymension
So stupid! The Trans community is not the only group being overly aggressive. Many historically disenfranchised group are fighting the petty stuff and missing the big picture.
Xzamilio
There’s an old saying (don’t know who it’s attributed to) that goes, “Having to explain a joke is like dissecting a frog: you understand it better, but it dies in the process.”
John Capers
It a drag quee, a male dressed as Ashe can’t make a joke you have she mail, they have gone to far you got mail from a she darn it
Joshua Wisniewski
They are messing with Uncle Charles to much… the show is no longer reality, it’s what the producers think the viewers watch… I would be surprised if Uncle Charles pulls out… then who the heck would want to watch just “Drag Race”
Brian Sherman
Wish it had been left in.
John Capers
Feels the show has been over produced, if you watched the he clips released prior to the crowning, you can see the h r you ft 9th for shadowing a ginger mind win until social media started anyone but ginger
lauraspencer
@spiffy:
The network always has final say in their original productions. They finance the shows so it is the network money that decides what stays and goes.
Dusty Lee
The show has gotten terrible with season 7. I don’t even care anymore.
Patrick Flanagan
It’s Ru Pauls show so _UCK ANY! that say’s it’s offensive. If ya don’t get a joke then ya don’t get it-BIG _UCKING DEAL!!!
Edson Mejia
That was fucking stupid. What a bunch of cry babies
Jacob Smiley
Old news.
Merv
Considering what’s happened since the so-called scandal, hasn’t it been proven conclusively that Parker Molloy is an unstable nutjob who should have never been listened to in the first place? Bring back She Mail just to rub her nose in it.
inbama
@Dymension:
Transgenders are the most aggressive about word policing because their identity as male or female relies on language manipulation.
Jim Hitzke
Rumor is thats why chatchki won cuz she identifies as some new trans category and ru screwed ginger just to shut up the trans community and mend fences.
fgth8er
Then none of you should get butt hurt if someone or a TV-Show includes a straight person saying f*g and f****t all the time and jokes about it. you cis gay men are a bunch of hypocrites.
Giancarlo85
@aliengod: They didn’t hijack anything. Stop making up acronyms and stop living in fantasy, child.
AndYouWillDeal
At this point I’m pretty unsympathetic to the struggles of trans people, every experience I’ve had with them has been quite negative as it seems they hold a lot of resentment and negativity. Just recently one of them, who claimed to have been “spat on by life and treated like garbage” got upset with me to the point of screaming because I addressed her as “lady” and “dear”, as she thought I was mocking her by calling her by a female title (she was male to female trans) and by a kind name. It seems many of them are just attention seeking “snow-flakes” fighting with each other for who is more oppressed, because that makes them so special, being oppressed is sooooo cool, all the tumblr kids love it.
fgth8er
@AndYouWillDeal: “attention seeking “snow-flakes””? are you kiding me? if she felt hurt because she tought you mocked her than that probably happend to her before and she is just careful around cis-people. No one who is really opressed wants to be opressed no one wants to be missgenderd no one wants to have explain themselves every single time you meet someone new and become close to them. Of course she could have tried to be a little more calm – BUT sometimes you just can’t and you have to vent and most defenitley you were the last drop that made the glass overflow. And her screaming at you was definitely a effective way because it is now in your head.
Desert Boy
I remember the controversy well. It was the paleo-feminists who bitched about Ru using “she-mail” and the Logo executives rolled over. In reality, the screamers numbered fewer than a dozen but Logo refused to back Ru Paul. Such a shame.
Cam
@Jim Hitzke: said…

No, what happened was Ginger was picked to win at the beginning. The show wanted a big queen to win, Ginger couldn’t sew, so they basically had no sewing challenges. Ginger could act, so they loaded the season up with acting challenges and edited them well.
And then in the second to the last episode, Ginger pulled the “Shady Pageant Girl” routine, and the online fans turned on her. The hashtag #AnyoneButGinger blew up. Ru was handing her the win, and she blew it.
Clark35
Love Ru, they should have kept it anyway just to piss off Trans activists. 😉
Merv
@fgth8er: The problem with your analogy is that drag queens have been using the word [email protected] since forever. Its use is not exclusively as an anti-trans epithet. In England there is a traditional dish called [email protected] Gay people in England don’t get all bent out of shape when the word is used in that context, because they understand that context is everything. Apparently, some people haven’t learned that yet.
fgth8er
@Merv: of course context is everything but when the people who are degraded by that word say it is NOT okay than you just shouldn’t use that word. Drag queens and trans-women about fifty years ago where basicly the same many had no other way to live their true selves that is probably why many drag queens use s*****e and the t-slur. Also many trans people where upset because of the episode that included a game where they identified a person wheter or not if they were a “psychological” or “biological” woman and that is just wrong – don’t tell me otherwise.
OhHellNo
@aliengod: Bravo. I remember when “gay” was enough.
Giancarlo85
@AndYouWillDeal: Aw here we go… another self centered bigot who wants to take his little personal experiences and state them as fact.
John D. Plume
I no longer identify with the LGBTTQQ2SA mess. I am of the LGB community.
Treated badly over and over by the Ts, I am sticking with the homosex community. The agendas we have and those of the other sexual minorities are TOO different. The T community has 50 different opinions as to what is politically-correct–so when you use one term or idea taught to you by a trans person, the other 49 will BLAST you for using it and tell you what is right to say, which will get you blasted by the new person who will tell you what is right to say, which will get you blasted by… Ad nauseam.
I’m tired of being told I am oppressing a transman because I don’t want, as a gay man, to have sex with him. (Sorry, but one-inch penises just do not do it for me, sexually, as they are not practical for important sex acts.)
I’m tired I can’t question without being deemed the oppressor.
A lot of verbal manipulation is happening. You can say a million times that a transman is the same as a (cis-)man but the micro-genitalia cannot be ignored and anyone with eyes in their head knows it; nor can a word be changed to include a different, contrary meaning–just because the trans community demands it to be so.
That is Orwellian double-speak.
There are numerous other problems that are being swept under the rug, also.
The trans community is burning through its connections to its closest allies. I hope it knows what its doing because I sure don’t.
Giancarlo85
@John D. Plume: There is no such thing as the “LGB” community. Your little childish attack and making fun of the LGBTQQI community shows how much of a hypocrite you are.
“Homosex” community? What about bisexuals? Do you hate them because they aren’t 100% “homosex” (LOL)? This has nothing to do with political correctness. You demand rights and equality for you, yet want to deny that to trans people because you’re a bigoted ass.
I don’t think transman are demanding that you have sex with them. And your attack on transman and generalizing them as only wanting sex with you (which I highly doubt), is laughable. Get some real and some original material. This is all hypocritical nonsense to me.
Jacob23
@Giancarlo85: lol! Just saw this. So glad that I’m not the only one to send you into spasms of rage. Yep, the LGB community is real and its fabulous. More importantly, it’s the only combination of letters that make any logical sense. All the rest is contrivance and political fiat. BTW, even you admit that LGB is a thing because every one of the wacko letter combinations that you advocate includes LGB. Every single one. Look, instead of raging against reality, why don’t you take your gender nonconforming, bullying, violent self and find peace within the TTSQNGCI community, or as it is more commonly known, the psych ward.
mikelphx
When Rupaul is called transphobic you know the PC police have gone way too far.
