Pride 2017

In a sea of Pride parties, Juanita More! knows how to bring the magic

Pride season is upon us, and this year we’re ringing it in by spotlighting the folks who make us proud to show up to work each day — the artists, activists, performers and personalities who make our community shine.

Juanita More! is a mover and a shaker in San Francisco’s queer scene, regularly playing hostess to some of the city’s finest events. She’s as well known for her gag-worthy fashions (many of which are custom creations by Mr. David) as she is for her mouth-watering kitchen creations. Her blog, Juanita Eats Out, features her favorite recipes as well as stories of her family and her varied activities around the city, from parties to politics and everything in between.

What are you working on right now that brings you pride?

My team and I are currently working on my annual Pride event which takes place on Pride Sunday, June 25th at 620 Jones. It has been touted as the “BEST” party of the year. For the first time we have chosen two groundbreaking nonprofits as beneficiaries, The Q Foundation (formerly AIDS Housing Alliance) and the LGBT Asylum Project. In the spirit of San Francisco’s status as a sanctuary city the services of both the Q Foundation and the LGBT Asylum Project are woven together like a safety net for those most in need of calling our community home. (Ticket information here.)

Describe your first pride for us.

The thing I remember most about my first Pride was the sense of freedom I felt when I stepped off the sidewalk and onto Market Street. It was as though I was letting the world know that I was out and proud.

Most awkward pride moment?

I can’t remember an awkward moment at Pride!

We actually believe you on that one — you’ve got all the grace! Which city’s pride is on your bucket list?

The Pride celebration that is on my bucket list has to be World Pride! This year it is in Madrid – one of my favorite cities in Spain.

Does Pride feel different this year?

This year Pride feels different because of our current political climate. It is more important than ever to show our strength, power and love.

Ultimate pride song?

My choice for the ultimate Pride song would have to be “Over the Rainbow” by Patti LaBelle!

Your ideal pride outfit?

My ideal Pride outfit would have to always be the newest one I am currently working on with Mr. David! The creative process is always such an absolute joy!
