Neil Darish is all about self-reliance. Known as the unofficial “Mayor” of McCarthy, Darish is the biggest land owner in a ghost town that rests, literally, on the edge of the Alaska state line. In the winter, McCarthy has a population of about 40 residents.
Completely off the road system, Darish is McCarthy’s local entrepreneur, (the Lisa Vanderpump of the Arctic, if you will). He owns the only bar, the only store and the only hotel in town (if you can call it a town). And soon, once his master plan is complete, he will be the only supplier of electricity to a community that has long since been off the grid.
It is no wonder that Discovery Channel snapped him up as a lead character for Edge of Alaska (airing Fridays at 10 p.m.), part of their growing repertoire of Alaskan-themed reality shows. The only thing they forgot to mention is: Neil Darish is gay.
Queerty contributor Clark Harding flew to Anchorage, drove 10 hours down a dirt road in to the wilderness; then hiked across a footbridge and stayed in a cabin with no running water. Just to talk with Darish about what it’s like to be, possibly, the only openly gay frontiersman.
Queerty: When I think of deep wilderness or Alaska bush communities, I honestly have some stereotypes of my own. Like small mindedness and rampant homophobia. Has being openly gay in the wilderness ever been a problem?
Neil Darish: “Never for me. Look, self reliance is a critical similarity between every Alaskan on these shows. It’s a core value. It has nothing to do with your political or religious views. We aren’t redneck, Republican, gun toting anarchists, because we live in an outlaw town. We live in a place where we can take care of our own. So [McCarthy] doesn’t attract people who are intolerant, it attracts people who are self reliant enough that they can be tolerant.“
Really? The Alaska Dispatch News recently reported some dude came after you with a gun.
“That had nothing to do with me being gay. As you’ll also read in that Alaska Dispatch article, the people of McCarthy came to my rescue. McCarthy is very different than the outside world. As we are an isolated community, we have few options for government protection that would normally be found in any other town. While most can call 911, run inside, lock their door and wait for help, we sometimes are put in the position where we are forced to confront danger and resolve it on the spot. A gunman coming after me brings out the entire town and shows how much of a close-knit community we truly are — one that takes care of their own. Regardless of how someone feels about me, they will protect their fellow citizens against danger, coercion or lawlessness.“
So are you coming out of the closet?
“No. I’ve been out since my 20s. I came out when I found a partner, who brought me here. So coming to Alaska actually jived with coming out. And as long as I’ve been in Alaska I’ve been out. Ironically, though, it’s this town [of McCarthy] that kind of destroyed that relationship.“
I’m curious to know why your sexuality isn’t a plot point on the show?
“Mostly, I think because I don’t have anyone in my life. I mean if I had a significant other, then that would raise the question of why aren’t they on the show. But I’m single so…“
But did it ever come up with Discovery when they were considering you as a character?
“When I was first approached by Kate Purcell who is a casting director, one of the conversations I had early on was like “Just so you know I’m a gay guy and as far as I know there really are no gay people on Discovery, and I hope you’re not asking me to be someone I’m not.” And they were like “No no no we don’t care!” And then I pointed to a bunch of other publications in which I am out. Namely The Road To McCarthy which describes me and my ex partner, two gay guys building a lodge in the middle of nowhere. And then another called The Pilgrims Wilderness, a very tragic story about McCarthy’s history and I am outed very early on in the book.“
You’re not from McCarthy. Why did you choose McCarthy and how did you get here?
“When I grew up on the East Coast my dad had a salvage yard. And I loved it, all this cool old stuff. Fast forward when I met my partner, he actually grew up here in McCarthy. Within the first year of our relationship we made a visit and I looked around and was like, “Woah! Look at all this cool old stuff.” And this was before there was an Antique’s Road Show. Plus you got this cool ghost town, surrounded by mountains, in Alaska? I was just over the top enthralled.“

Not to downplay the openness of the town, but, he is the richest guy in town, owns the only bar, owns the only store and will be bringing them electricity for the first time? I’m sure that really helps with the acceptance.
Zekester
If he were a screaming stereotype his gayness would have been the ONLY thing CNN focused on.
This is just another example of the forced closetization of gay people and our lives by mainstream media and historians.

Two things:
1) Neil as “the unofficial mayor of McCarthy” is a self-designation picked up by the show. Few in McCarthy consider him the mayor. There is a better candidate for that designation who will have nothing to do with the show.
2) There are other out and semi-out gay folks in McCarthy. Like many folks there, they want nothing to do with this show and see it as an exploitation of the community.
I am an out, queer artist/academic who has visited McCarthy several times (6+) over the last decade. There is a vibrant writer/artist/environmentalist community there (some seasonal, some year round) that are not depicted on the show. The town is very accepting of people and has a liberal-libertarian “live and let live” attitude about folks there. I wouldn’t make the effort to go back so often if I didn’t feel safe, welcomed, and inspired by the community.
Neil is important to the community and has been a driving force behind making the TV show happen as he is always encouraging profitable development of the tourism industry there. For obvious reasons. What I find fascinating is that he has been a willing collaborator in the show’s tendency to frame him as a villain developer against the heroically framed rebel frontiersmen the show clearly celebrates. That the show (and he) hasn’t let queerness be part of that framing is a relief. But he also shouldn’t be cast as the solitary queer voice in that wilderness, either.

@Bungy32:
Quick clarification/retraction. I was wrong to state Neil self-designates as the unofficial mayor. I have never heard him claim or accept that title. Some others may assume that title applies because he is a prominent business man in the community, and who knows why the Discovery Channel latched onto the non-title. Sincerest apologies to Neil for my (mis)stated assumption that he was the source of that.

Haven’t seen it but how exciting for TV to have a gay “character” who is notable for reasons other than his homosexuality. Who knows, maybe the exposure will bring forth a new partner for Neil. Cynical me expects that is on the schedule for season 3.

Whomever interviewed him skipped over an great opportunity to find out more about his life when he said, “Ironically, though, it’s this town [of McCarthy] that kind of destroyed that relationship.” I’m curious as to why his relationship brought him to Alaska, but the ghost town ended the relationship.
I really like his points of view and his forthrightness with the casting director concerning who he is and that he isn’t willing to become anyone else. Will definitely check out the series.

Enough of this bullshit. I love this guy!!! Kudos to him for living his life on his terms.

I’m a straight dude and I’ve binge watched the show mostly because it’s just a really interesting show. And Neil is a big part of that. I never knew, suspected or cared who is or isn’t gay or straight on the show. To be honest, after working for years in a San Francisco hospital I found there is absolutely no core difference between people, straight or gay, green or orange for that matter.
Neil’s orientation isn’t a critical part of the show because even if they mentioned it, it still wouldn’t impact the interest points of the show; the fact that hearty people are the only ones who survive in that environment, period, is the only qualifier. Not everything has to be an allegory for something else; in fact most times “it is what it is”.

@stanhope: Which guy, Neil, the “Mayor”?.. Yeah, couldn’t agree w/you moar.
From what I’m watching on TV, the people -there- who are giving him grief are instigating this (jealousy?!) conflict, thing, which is -then- rubbing-off on viewers and so on…
& it’s (all) over bull: they’re putting him on the spot, but it seems like it’s actually them who could be in trouble (messing w/his money and time, for starters :)). Anyway. 🙂

Neil is no more the unofficial mayor than I am, except in his own mind. There are several people in our tiny community, who fit this description much better. Don’t confuse Neil from the TV show with Neil the person. Neil promotes McCarthy, because it promote himself. It make him feel big an important. Neil the person is a self-serving loud-mouthed asshole. No one here really cares if he is gay or not, it’s his rudeness and pomposity that bothers us.

I have watched Edge Of Alaska from first episode to last (several times with reruns lol) and do NOT see how – Where Neil sticks his little “Pee-Pee” when no one is looking!
