For those of you following the Duke rape case, you’re probably familiar with Victoria Peterson, the punchy, not-so-lovable Citizen’s Committee co-chair for Durham DA Mike Nifong, who is up for reelection. While we’re not particularly interested in the case, we are interested in Peterson’s comments regarding health insurance for same-sex couples.
Many of them are infected with diseases, and their lifestyles are very, very dangerous,” Peterson informed the county commission. “Many don’t live to be senior citizens. Who’s going to pay this expense if they get sick in their gay lifestyle?” And if “they [gays and lesbians] are not infected with diseases . . . they will be, even women.
It seems Peterson didn’t get the Center for Disease Control memo that in North Carolina:
In 2003, women constituted 28% of human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) cases in the United States; approximately 69% of those cases were among non-Hispanic black women. Heterosexual transmission is now the most commonly reported mode of HIV transmission among women.
I suppose it’s not important when you’re saying things like, “I’m not trying to be rude…” [right] “…[But] If this is approved in Durham County, we’re going to have gays coming from all over the country. It’s going to be a burdensome expense on taxpayers…Who is going to pay for this if they become sick in their gay lifestyle?”
What a sweet, obviously confused woman.

I find it astounding that anyone could hold such views today, especially given how long that AIDS has been a part of the American landscape. We have known the cause of AIDS for some time now: the HIV virus. We have long known that HIV is not spread by casual contact, neither does it spontaneously generate just because two same-sex partners decide to have intercourse. There is in fact much more of a risk of disease transmission via the heterosexual “lifestyle” – especially since straights make up 90% of the population and have most of the sex!!!
Following the “logic” of this woman’s comment, I could say the same thing about blacks, too. We know that a large percentage of blacks are incarcerated, are involved in crime, are born out of wedlock and into poverty, etc. So, doesn’t that mean that there is a problem with the “black lifestyle”? Does that mean that government should seek to prevent their entry into a community? (What’s good for the goose…)
Anyone can delve into swamp of bigotry and drag up the worst about any minority group. Anyone can use cheap, stereotypical and outdated views about minorities to promote discrimination against them. What I find so offensive about this woman’s comments is that they are so reminiscent of the language used against blacks duing the Civil Rights struggle of the past century. Change “gay” to “black” and re-read the comment. How does this ignorance still persist in 2006?

Leave Victoria alone and go find something else to criticize about. I say to Victoria…. congrats on your support for Mike…..rally the people together.
