Do you know what I love about that guy? He’s an ugly motherfucker. He’s fat. And I love it. You know what, he looks gay to me. Not that anybody looks gay but he does seem effeminate. I like that he’s chubby and gay, that’s why I love him. That’s how you know how good that song is… he’s fat and he’s gay and little girls worship him.”
— Howard Stern speaking about six-time Grammy nominee Sam Smith on his SiriusXM radio show

Why does anyone care what Howard stern thinks in 2015?
Large Marge
I think his overall message is that you can actually not be a twink/musclebunny and people still like you. As for the ‘ugly mf’er”, well Howard is ugly and people like him… and he knows it.
The overall message I got is that it’s okay to not be a greek god and have people still like you.
What is wrong with that message and why is it lessened because Stern said it?
DarkZephyr
@Large Marge: I think “Ugly Motherfucker” went waaaaaaaay too far. Plus I don’t think he is all that ugly and if he wanted to lose the SLIGHT excess body fat he has it would take him less than 3 months of eating a little more healthy and taking a jog every day.
I am not advocating that he HAS to do it. I think he looks fantastic as is. I find many husky guys attractive and I certainly don’t think he is ugly by any stretch. But it would NOT be hard for him to become a pretty boy if that was what he wanted. I think his bone structure is beautiful.
As I was writing this, I went and researched this further. Here is a more complete quote from USA Today:
“You know what I like about the guy? He’s an ugly (expletive). He’s fat. … Is he gay? He looks gay to me, not that anybody looks gay, but he does seem effeminate. … I like that he’s chubby and gay. That’s why I love him. He’s one of those guys I feel like, he’s really good but I feel like that will be his only hit song — beautiful voice. That’s how good that song is. He’s fat and he’s gay and little girls worship him. That’s when you know you have a good song and a good voice. .. I’d like to get him in here to congratulate him on beating the odds. He’s like the male Adele.”
Marge, this was SHADE in the first degree. There was no sweet message here. He was being a douche. Threw some shade at Adele while he was at it.

@Large Marge I wholeheartedly agree. I have listened to Howard for years and will spend huge amounts of time joking about his own appearance. His whole commentary was simply stating this dude’s package has NOTHING to do with his success it’s all PURE Talent. He is taking it a step further in stating not only is he not the “Beautiful Package” but kinda like the “Anti-Package” and still kills it. Does the dude look like a chunky George Michael with a faux hawk? Maybe. Does he sing circles around most men/women on the radio in the last decade, MOST DEF! Sam Smith is Phenomenal.

Somebody’s gonna hate this, but before I ever (knowingly) heard a Sam Smith song & had just seen pix of him I thought he was a lesbian. I had only read about him but apparently no gender pronouns jumped out. All I had read was that “Sam Smith is an OUT singer”… he had a chubby face, he had a sort of lesbian haircut, and he went around looking grumpy & depressed all the time, all of which to me = lesbian.
After I actually heard him sing and knew for sure who it was, well, now I have a much different impression of him.
aliengod
@Large Marge: You’re correct. I’ve been a Stern fan for years and he’s definitely become a LGB advocate over the years. What he said about Sam Smith is right, he’s a fat gay kid with an awesome voice. What’s wrong with that?
QJ201
Do you know what I love about Howard Stern?
He’s an ugly motherfucker. He’s out of shape. And I love it. You know what, he looks a old Jew. Not that anybody looks jewish but he does seem to have that jewish nose. I like that he’s ugly and jewish, that’s why I love him. That’s how you know how good a radio personality he is. He’s ugly and jewish and everyone loves him. I mean would this guy ever get laid if he weren’t rich and famous?
back at ya Howard

To be honest, I never paid much attention to what Sam Smith looks like. The point is that he’s a recording artist… not a model, not an actor, not a athlete, etc etc etc… I buy music based on an artist’s vocal skills and on how beautiful or interesting his/her songs are.
The idea that a singer is supposed to be handsome or beautiful has always baffled me. I’ll take Aretha, Elton, Billy Joel, Streisand, Sam, and Fleetwood Mac over Arianna, Beyoncé, and the Beibers of the world any day of the week.

@QJ201: Howard says the same things about himself all the time. He knows he’s an ugly motherfucker. He addressed the fact that LGB’s are mumbling about the Sam Smith comments on his show today. He basically called it what it is… a bunch of BS.
The LGB community needs to stop attacking our allies.
Desert Boy
Howard is a hot mess. I love that he has George Takei on his Sirius show as a regular.
Xzamilio
@QJ201: Yeah, you’re not gonna hurt his feelings saying that because he’s said it himself. As if you’re looking at Sam Smith as sexy… stop posing

Howard Stern has and continues to make A TON OF MONEY because he is a provocateur who manages to creatively tell the the truth in an entertaining and insulting manner. And this is CLASSIC Howard Stern at his best. If he had simply said “Sam Smith is one talented mofo who has made it to the top of the charts solely on his singing voice because he’s not a sculpted good looking Greek God” where’s the controversy, where are the listeners? Stern is a self-effacing shock jock who has simply told the truth about Sam Smith in classic Stern “style”. Stop the PC BS and stop easting your young, LGBTQ community. Howard Stern is an ally. He’s saying that Sam Smith has a phenomenal voice and VERY talented while not being just “good looking product”.
DuMaurier
I’ve never been a ‘fan’ of Stern, partly because I refuse to listen to people TALKING on the radio, but I used to watch his late night TV show with it’s one-on-one interviews, and he is great with his guests. He doesn’t gush and skirt uncomfortable subjects that are exactly what the audience wants to hear about (I’m talking about you, Entertainment Tonight–but not only you), but he doesn’t go so far that he shuts the conversation down (but I’ll never forget him reducing poor Dick Cavett to a stammering dumbfuck by bringing up those old gay rumors about him and Woody Allen)
Cam
@QJ201: Truthfully, Stern says far worse about himself all the time.

Howard is a great ally for the LGBT community. He says what so many of us want to say, but we’re afraid to even whisper it. He says it as it is. I’m not a huge fan of Sam Smith, but Howard is just as self-critical to himself as he is to other celebrities. Howard is a legend, Sam Smith isn’t, yet.
TomOH
There’s a difference between saying “I think you’re an ugly effeminate looking motherfucker” and saying something like “come on folks, admit it, you know deep down we all think Sam is an ugly motherfucker, and if you don’t, you’re lying” – the later is not only presumptuous, it’s flat out wrong, and it’s putting mean hateful words in my mouth that I don’t agree with at all. You’re entitled to your own tastes in whomever, but don’t act like your tastes are the gold standard that everyone else must adhere to. I don’t find Brad Pitt or the members of One Direction attractive at all, despite them being plastered all over TV and media.
PLAYS WELL WITH OTHERS
Stern has the classic “face for radio” He is not as ugly as he claims to be, he tells things like they are and never gave a thit what others said about what he says. He is honest and never panders to the PC crowd. He has always been pro-Gay and a supporter of us even before it was acceptable for a celeb to say they are Pro-Gay………
The truest test that he is actually a good, honest, person is his wife, Beth you know she ain’t in it for his looks nor his tool……………

Howard Stern has the ugliest hair style known to mankind. What lies beneath is what truly scares me, however.
As for his attitude to gay rights, he is not gay-friendly in my view. Didn’t he have some “lesbian dating show” where he fetishized lesbians in a pornographic way? This is not gay-friendly stuff.
If any other radio presenter uses his seat, please make sure you disinfect it beforehand.
Captain Obvious
What a hateful little message from a mental midget like Howard Stern. I don’t care what “point” he was trying to convey, he did it like an idiot seeking attention. Calling someone ugly, claiming the guy is effeminate which “looks gay”, and more but I’m over this clown.
I don’t see how Stern has a career to be honest. Considering he’s on a family show you’d think he’d tone down the amount of feces that flows from his face on a daily basis.
PLAYS WELL WITH OTHERS
@jason smeds:
“My feeling about gay people is that we have a responsibility not only to make gay marriage acceptable and to make gays feel accepted as much as heterosexuals…Gay people are downtrodden They are beaten. They are abused for their sexuality, and it goes across race. In the white community and the black community gay people are the bastards of the world. And in order for things to change, because any one of you could have gay children, or gay relatives, or gay friends…we have a responsibility to make this acceptable, to get all this bullshit so that some gay kid going to high school doesn’t get the shit beaten out of him just because he’s gay…I’m as heterosexual as they come. What is this hang-up about gay marriage? Who cares? Get on with your life!”
Sounds pretty darn “Gay friendly” to me……anyone else????
PLAYS WELL WITH OTHERS
Dammit, I was supposed to put the above was a direct quote of Howard Stern……

Plays Well With Others,
Just because somebody says something nice about gay rights, it doesn’t make him immune to criticism for when he says something that is not so nice.
Learn to discern based on the whole picture and not just what you want to see.
PLAYS WELL WITH OTHERS
@jason smeds:
Actually what I want to see is more of what Stern offers up. He is an equal opportunity offender. His humor is caustic and unbridled. He does not care who he offends and does so with glee.
However the difference between him and 99.999% of the world’s entertainers is that he is very adamant in letting people know that it is just that entertainment. When he presses pause on his schtick he has no problem calling out those who spew hatred, ignorance, and bigotry not only upon our community but any other group or cause that is unjustly subject to the venom we are piled upon each and every day…………..
And it is not him only “saying something nice about Gay rights” it is his unwavering support for decades…………

It’s funny how many of these comments are defending Stern as if he’s the one that was insulted.
Stern is the one who called someone ugly.
Stern is the one who called someone fat.
Stern is the one who someone effeminate and gay looking.
When you insult other people like that you can expect that someone (probably Sam Smith) is going to get offended.
You get to have people doubt you and your intentions. You get to have someone think you’re a homophobe without crying that you were misunderstood. When your shtick or form of entertainment is to be a shock jock and to run people down this is what you get and no amount of defenders on here is going to change anyone’s mind.
Howard Stern is not the victim. He’s not the gay man who have to navigate the lookism that exists in gay culture knowing he doesn’t fit the gay ideal. That Howard Stern dig probably goes deep so I have little sympathy if some people think Stern is a homophobe.
Captain Obvious
@xzall: It’s also sick that he would make comments like that when young gay men have to deal with a lot of dysmorphia issues behind weight and looks. I myself was still dealing with it up until I almost had a damned breakdown and stopped starving myself to be thin. Dieting doesn’t work for everyone, especially most men, some of us have to exercise… and if you don’t find that entertaining then you won’t do it which means you’ll be thick. Simple as that.
I could see if Stern was at least going at someone his own age, but he’s basically attacking a child, as an adult. It’s disgusting.
SonOfKings
I can’t stand Sam Smith’s vocal style. He has a great voice, but chooses to sing in a mumbly, baby-ish style that clips the first letter of every third or fourth word. His enunciation is terrible. He sings the way a toddler talks. His adult-baby voice just makes my skin crawl. He kind of looks like an adult-sized baby too. Not my idol. More of a curiosity, which is what I think Howard was getting at.

Some straight people have never seen a chubby gay guy apparently
