Playing Gay In Liberace Sure To Snag Michael Douglas An Oscar, Right?

Liberace’s museum may be closed, but that doesn’t mean the showgirl’s legacy is dead: Jerry Weintraub, the Hollywood producer, insists the the gay kissy film Liberace will mint an Oscar for Michael Douglas, who plays the flamboyant Wladziu. Because as we all know, it’s quite a stretch for straight actors to play gay, and it’s either Douglas or Leonardo DiCaprio that are going to take home the Academy Award for Best Gay Kiss.

The painfully politically-correct Hollywood establishment will no doubt throw gobs of awards at Douglas and DiCaprio, just like they did at Sean Penn for playing Harvey Milk, despite the fact that “Milk” was a god-awful film. No news here, just the status quo.

@CockyRocky: Last I check, Milk didn’t win Picture of the Year. So Your argument is baseless. If anything other than acting, Sean won for the Oscar for the character, not the movie.

I’m not sure if its because I’m gay, but gay characters in movies are way more interesting and fascinating than straight characters. I could never sit through a straight version of “A Single Man”

@JamesUK: I had the exact same thought…He’ll be nom’d because he’s str8 and win because he’s at death’s door. One of the movie critics —I wish I could remember who— did an analysis of Oscar winners and pointed out the frequent “sympathy vote.”

I am looking forward to the film, all the same.

^ Because Damon is playing Liberace’s lover in the film.

I agree Douglas will get the sympathy vote. The Academy members are usually old and sentimental.

…He may even deserve the Oscar. We’ll have to wait and see what his performance is like…

Why is it that gay people are shown mainly in biopics? It seems to me that the only genre of movies that Hollywood can fit us into is the biopic.

Is it because biopics are safe and based on facts? Look, that’s fine with me. But if Hollywood is only going to show our love in biopics, it’s not a genuine acceptance. We should be in movies across the board, not just biopics.

Hollywood needs to be put on notice that we in the GLBT community have had it up to our gills with its omission of our lives in movies that aren’t biopics.

@Jason: Better question: Why are *famous* people are shown mostly in biopics?

Hint: the answer will be the same.
