To anyone who has crooned “You Don’t Own Me” after a nasty breakup…or just a few margaritas…take heed! The stars of The First Wives Club are reuniting.
Actresses Goldie Hawn, Bette Midler and Diane Keaton, all of whom headlined the original 1996 cult comedy, will co-star later this year in the holiday comedy Family Jewels. The film–a sort of spiritual sequel to First Wives–will see the three legends play three women, all of whom once married the same man. When he drops dead, the three, along with their kids and grandchildren, all are forced to spend the holidays together in New York City. As with The First Wives Club, the film will examine the lives of spurned women and the relationships between them.

The original First Wives Club, though a modest box office & critical success, found a second life on home video, enough so to spawn a stage musical adaptation, a telefilm, and TV series remake and several aborted attempts at a sequel. All three actresses have expressed their wish to work together again. In this case, it looks like wishes can come true.
Family Jewels will film later this year. A theatrical release date will be forthcoming.

This movie has very bitter sweet memories for me. At the end of 1995, my mother came home to a note from my Dad that he had packed up his stuff and left her for his mistress of 15 years. My parents seemed like the perfect couple, Ozzie and Harriet like, and this was a total shock. I was 38 at the time, so it was like my parents getting divorced at 12, but, nevertheless, the turmoil created was huge. I started taking my Mom out to dinner and a movie every Friday night (which led to a very embarrassing viewing of Boogie Nights, which I should have checked out more carefully before going) and seeing this. After lights in the theater came up, she said to me, “Well, that was refreshing.” She really appreciated seeing how she felt up on screen. She wasn’t as alone as she thought. She passed away in 2001 and I still miss her.

Thanks for sharing. I saw a mom and her daughter at a showing of Lovelace , needless to say they left after about fifteen minutes.
