Ellettsville, IN, resident Becky Wegner Rommel recently took a break from house cleaning to record a cellphone video about marriage equality, and it’s a real doozy to say the least.
“This is a really sad day for me,” Rommel begins. “Everything that God created his church to be — as man as woman — Adam and Eve — Five justices decided that God was wrong!”
What then follows are four and a half hilarious tear-filled minutes of regurgitated Fox News propaganda and a nonsense prayer about America’s decidedly secular founding fathers.
“God did not change! His word is truth!” Rommel sobs. “And God says that marriage is between a man and a woman! … I don’t care what you think. I don’t care what you think about my opinion because, you know what? I could really care less!”
Likewise, we’re sure.
She then unleashes her inner Islamaphobe, saying: “Jesus Christ, not Mohammad, OK?! It’s just, like, these Islamic extremlists — extremists — OK? They’re not just extremists. They’re ISLAAAAMIC! President Obama ISLAAAAMIC! Ext — Extremlist!”
“OK, all I want to know is truth,” she continues. “A man and a wife are to be married, OK? That’s what God said! I’m telling you what God said!”

My take on this seems to be a bit different than what I’m reading here .. no name calling, no emotional tirade. When I hear someone like this woman, the hypocrisy really makes me wonder. Here we have a woman, so representative of a very vocal segment of society, who screams about religious freedom and yet, demands all others adhere to HER beliefs. Many such individuals say they desire smaller government and less government intrusion in THEIR lives but, given the opportunity, would insist on intruding in mine. It truly is fascinating!! I wish they were as mindful of their scripture when it counters their rants as per Matthew 7:1: “Judge not …” and so I won’t. In a compassionate sense, I really do find such individuals a sad lot though.

Please help me understand, because I think I’m missing something, with all this reactionary backlash about the recent SCOTUS decision. All the Supreme Court decision has done is prevent discrimination on the part of governmental agencies (such as federal, state & municipal governments) for those same-sex marriages. Thus, marriage licenses and all the state and federal benefits bestowed upon married couples such as tax benefits, insurance, health and inheritance, etc., cannot be different for heterosexual or gay married partners in the US. Religious conservatives may continue to discriminate, as may butchers, bakers, candle-stick makers and anyone else. What is their issue?? You can’t really compare this sad, sad woman to Tammy Faye Bakker. Tammy Faye was all about love, and joy and money. About being happy, about making her happy by sending her some more money, so she could build a Christian amusement park where Christians could be happy. This poor woman could have used a week or two there, to work on her anger issues.
The problem with so many politically right-wing Christians, is that they think this is a Christian nation, founded by Christians. It is a very diverse nation, getting less religious every day, founded by a bunch of enlightened agnostics. They knew that we had to get religion out of govt or we would end up just like the rest of the world. In order to stay free, they knew we had to be free. And that meant free from the tyranny of the majority, as James Madison called it. That’s why he made sure we had the third branch of govt, the courts. I guess since the Christian Right has failed to convince the world that they are being persecuted in the U.S. and that there is a War on Christianity taking place which result in a holocaust of the faithful – they have decided their tactic will be to become so irrational, hostile, violent, threatening, confrontational and scary, and instigating reactions to them that eventually things will become so out of control that there won’t be any other choice but to take action in order to ensure the safety of the public. Then they’ll hold that up as evidence of their claims.
And the scary thing is that there is a huge industry in the U.S. whose sole purpose is to manipulate people like her into specific opinions, world views, conspiracy theories, untrue historical events, false rumors, etc. And then control how they will act upon and spread the information. I’ve been noticing this for years in my parents and their peers. The misinformation is so targeted and coordinated, it’s like they have it down to a science. The result is that it affects the mental health of those who are its victims because they’re exploiting fears, insecurities, generational and cultural misunderstandings, long-held biases, etc. FOX News, talk radio, Christian television networks, people like Ann Coulter, Glenn Beck, Rush, Michelle Malkin…… the list could go on for pages. And that’s just traditional media – their internet presence and social networking keeps growing. There are nutwing celebrities for every taste and demographic known. Just talking to people who fall for these provocateur media outlets you will see how much misinformation they’ve consumed. And it’s always over the same specific things everyday across the board. Many of these older people don’t have the savvy to understand how the info they’re getting has been manipulated. They don’t know how to fact check since all the sources they trust are pushing the same thing and everyone they know are in the same boat.

I don’t see too many people nowadays using this that Bible verse that St. Paul him said to justify slavery as a natural part of the human condition. The human condition and social condition evolve; people miss the Jesus’s overall message which was that of universal love, loving your fellow man. If we pigeonholed into defining that through something as arbitrary and uncontrollable as sexuality we miss the centrality of what the gospels are all about. Jesus Christ himself would not have discriminated, since he had female disciples as high ranking as his male ones. Some Biblical Scholars argue that King David and Prince Jonathan had a homosexual dalliances with one another.
She talks the “Biblical” definition of marriage, which is completely different from what modern Western marriages are. She mentions Abraham and Jacob; but she forgets that both men had polygamous relationships. Abraham his wives, Sarah and Keturah, as well as his concubine Hagar. Jacob had two wives, Leah and Rachel, as well as fathering children with their handmaidens Bilhah and Zilpah. King David had at least eight wives and his son Solomon had 700. According to Biblical rules, wives were always supposed to be subordinate to their husbands. Women had no real rights or protections of their own. That was controlled first by her father and then by her husband. Interfaith marriages were also strictly prohibited. Not to mention that those marriages were almost 99% arranged and not based on love, as modern marriages are thought of. Also if a woman was accused by her fiancé of not being a virgin and the accusation was true she could be put to death.
If a woman’s husband died then it was up to his brother (or closest male relative) to marry her, and in that she would have to be sexually submissive to her new husband, not to mention that the first child/son born of that union would be considered her first husband’s child. If a woman is raped, then she would be forced to marry her rapist, the rapist would also have to pay a “property loss” fine to his new father-in-law. Most Americans would never agree to this marital practices as law.
“Not everyone can accept this teaching, but only those to whom it is given. For there are eunuchs who have been so from birth, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by others, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Jesus identifies three classes of men who should not marry women. Taking his categories in reverse order, first, there are those who have made themselves “eunuchs” for the kingdom of heaven, i.e., those who foreswear marriage to better serve God. Second, he mentions those who have been “made eunuchs by others,” an apparent reference to castrated males. But Jesus mentions a third category — eunuchs who were born that way. Some might argue that Jesus was referring to males born without testicles, but this would be extremely rare. Moreover, this interpretation ignores how the term “born eunuchs” was used in other literature of the time.
In the ancient world, including ancient Jewish culture (as reflected in the Talmud), “natural” or “born” eunuchs were not associated with missing testicles. Rather, they were associated with stereotypically effeminate characteristics and behavior (just like modern gay men), and were thought by Rabbi Eliezer to be subject to “cure” (just like modern gays). Moreover, as we have also seen, eunuchs were commonly associated with homosexual desire. As a reasonably informed person of his time, Jesus would have been aware of this common view of eunuchs. Yet he very matter-of-factly asserts that some people are simply born that way. The implication of his statement is profound — God created gay people the way they are! Jesus says so.
