Daily Mail, how is it possible that we live in a world where Gawker is getting shut down but you are allowed to continue existing?
Some of the Olympics coverage coming out of the newspaper has been homophobic, though it’s your call whether to think of it as thinly-veiled or just out-and-out hostile. There was the time they admonished two hugging swimmers “steady on chaps” and compared it to the manly slaps of another team.
But then, exasperatingly, they showed a heterosexual medal-winning couple kissing with the caption “GOLDEN KISS.” Okay, got it: two men hugging requires steadying, while a straight embrace is a thing of beauty.
Dear Straight People. This is what we mean by casual homophobia. You might not see it, but we certainly do. pic.twitter.com/XRUPBN9Ga3

Twitter, understandably, is miffed. Although to be fair you can find someone miffed about anything on Twitter.
“Daily Mail clears up the issue of ‘acceptable’ Olympic celebrations,” tweeted Alastair Jamieson, and NBC journalist in London. (That was followed by some sub-drama, in which another user stole his tweet, posted it as his own, and got a lot more retweets.)
Credit for this photo goes to @alastairjam who seems very upset that people are using it without crediting him. https://t.co/hr0FvSA3Y5

Who’s responsible for this nonsense? Looks like David Williams and Claire Duffin might share some blame — they’re the reporters who wrote about the kiss. Ollie Gillman wrote about the hug, along with (and we cannot make this up) a writer named Nick Fagge. Oh, okay.
Anyway, thanks Daily Mail, for being providing everyone with an example of casual homophobia. Now everyone else knows what not to do, or so we hope.

Casual homophobia is not a thing. It’s inaccurate to describe actions serious enough to be considered homophobic as casual. Analyzing things to death is how terms like “casual homophobia” are created.

If times hadn’t changed…..they’d be downright homophobic…

I might regret saying this but….I agree completely with @Masc Pride.
So true buddy. So true.

So does this mean Queerty is going to stop linking to stories in the mail from now on? You’ve been called out enough for it in the past.

“Casual homophobia”? What’s that, like diet hate crime? I can’t with the “microaggressions” double speak for something perceived as homophobic but “Is it homophobia or am I being an melodramatic little bitch?” I can’t decide… so maybe it’s just a sprinkle of homophobia. Well, “casual homophobia” is a hell of a lot better than the “Bring Your Gay Son To Roof Tossing Day” going on further over there…

…Crikey, they’re such silly ignorant twits!! How funny. The Daily Mail is quite literally appallingly JEALOUS of men hugging–it’s so obvious…will those people begin to realize that it’s just ‘jealousy’ they feel due to the fact that 2 men can have sex together. Which therefore upsets the emotions of poor, ignorant and depraved wankers.

“Daily Mail, how is it possible that we live in a world where Gawker is getting shut down but you are allowed to continue existing?”
“Queerty, how is it possible that we live in a world where you consider ‘journalism’ to be the reposting of ‘stories’ from Whisper and Reddit, and you’re allowed to continue existing?”
Pot-kettle. If you’re going to criticise another news site—look in the mirror first.

Daily Fail can’t help themselves, they see two practically naked super-fit attractive male swimmers hugging closely and it gives them a bit of a boner. That lil boner causes them to anxiously question their masculinity thereby challenging their straightness – this triggers a homophobic response. “ME NO HOMO! see I dislike hot guys hugging”.

“Casual homophobia” is, in fact, a thing. Just as casual sexism and casual racism are. They are more accurate terms for what is referred to these days as “micro-aggression”. They are slights that are not as overt as hurling epithets or acts of exclusion and hostility/violence, but nonetheless make it clear that lgbt people are “other” or “less than”.
So while clearly the approbation granted the hetero kiss is not casual homophobia, the comparison between how the kiss and a same sex hug are treated is. They are not calling the divers nancy boys, as they might have a generation ago (aggressive homophobia), but they are making it clear that their notion of decorum does not include same sex affection in public (casual homophobia). They don’t wish we didn’t exist, just that we didn’t remind them that we do.

Like Edith Massey said in Female Trouble, “The world of the heterosexual is a sick and boring life”.

Daily Mail is a right wing rag. If you don’t believe me read the comment sections. Most support Trump-need I say more?

The British press is a disgrace. Daily Mail is one of the worst rags possible. Look up its owner. Publish his name. We need to know who it is.

According to Wikipedia, Daily Mail is edited by Paul Dacre. His wife is Kathleen and they have a son who is a theater director called James.
Theater director?

When will people learn to see beauty in ALL beautiful things? Olympic athletes in ancient Greece used to compete COMPLETELY naked during all competitions, and people went WILD with admiration. Those were the times where masculinity and male to male love were still in fashion. People should learn about the origins of the Olympiad.

I would like to introduce myself to these two gems.

Many years ago, about 20, a black women corrected someone when they used the expression “reverse prejudice”. There is only prejudice she said. So is there casual homophobia or just homophobia? It’s letting them off easy to let them say casual. Is there such a thing as reverse prejudice ? Is a black person being prejudiced against white people reversed prejudice ?

@Evji108:
Yes, that little fire in their loin causes them to say and do curious things…

Let’s talk about how every single media refused to accept the gay scene exactly the way it wants to get represented – in its totally unreconstructed form.
Non-so-casual racism in gay scene is obviously irrelevant.
