It all began with some bitchy comments made in Rolling Stone interview: erstwhile pop band The Chainsmokers (DJs Alex Pall and Drew Taggart) decided to take the low road and diss Calvin Harris, Rihanna, and Lady Gaga. Reflecting the overall sentiment of our Facebook feed, they also ventured to say that “Perfect Illusion” “sucks.”

Well, Lady Gaga didn’t like that. And decided to strike back. Her new song “A-Yo” features these opening lines: “I can’t wait to smoke them all / Whole pack like Marlboro / Blow it in your face / Blow it in your face / Blow it in your, blow it in your face.”

Well, much as you’re not allowed to refer to yourself as “subversive” or “transgressive” or “The Real Deal,” Lady Gaga decided that shading The Chainsmokers wasn’t quite enough, so she decided to point out her own shade to The Chainsmokers in a Tweet, which makes her shade not shade at all, much like Alanis Morrissette’s “Ironic” isn’t ironic at all:

Then The Chainsmokers responded with this odd bit of Hot Topic artwork and the crypto-corny lines “Fighting flames with fire” and “I died for you one time but never again.”

Then there was this. Olive branch?

And then? And then?

Now, #GagaEndedTheChainSmokersParty is trending on Twitter. And here’s why:

Unfortunately, none of this excitement can eclipse the fact that the song “A-YO” is a total clunker.
