Rupert Everett, who has already starred in adaptations of The Importance of Being Earnest and An Ideal Husband, will play Oscar Wilde himself in the upcoming bio pic, The Happy Prince, reports Variety.
The out thespian will also direct the movie, set to start production in summer 2013.
Prince, which tells the story of Wilde’s tragic final days in exile, will also co-stars Colin Firth, Emily Watson, Tom Wilkinson and Edward Fox.
It’ll be an acting challenge for Everett, who we hear is nowhere near as charming and friendly as Wilde.
Also, who will play Lord Alfred “Bosie” Douglas? May we suggest Andrew Garfield?

“who we hear is nowhere near as charming and friendly as Wilde.” Seriously? Oscar Wilde, the guy that basically invented and patented the zinger? He was bitchy enough for TWO sassy black sidekick stereotypes. Why is queerty never satisfied? If an actor does something for the LGBT community, it’s “Oh look, he/she’s still in the closet”, then when they come out “Why didn’t they come out sooner? Why didn’t they come out using our site?”, then as they go on with their careers it’s “Why haven’t they come out with anything relevant or HAWT, like those straight actors we pant after?”, and forbid any of them actually respond to criticisms, or it’s years of always mentioning how catty they are whenever a piece of news with their names attached comes up.

Of the actors around at present there’s only one who I think is capable of playing Wilde convincingly, and that actor has indeed already played him: Stephen Fry (whose Bosie was played by Jude Law).
Gary Indiana
I suspect he won’t be as good as Stephen Fry was in Wilde.
w.e.
Hopefully he will just do his acting job without any more whining about his career suicide.

He looks a bit like George Michael or Bruce Campbell. Oscar Wilde with a chainsaw appendage.

I’m looking forward to this.
As for Everett not being as ‘charming and friendly’ as Wilde? Since when was Oscar Wilde charming and friendly?
Wilde was a brilliant writer and wit, but was never charming and friendly.

Hugh Grant, looks most like him. Victory Mortenson, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Jude Law etc would be awesome……I think Everett may be a miscast but won’t call it till I see it.

Ugh Everette is a shitty actor. I don’t think he should play the bisexual Oscar Wilde since he won’t do it nearly as well as Stephen Fry did.

I would be more interested in the script than who is playing Oscar
Are we going to get the ellman syphilis version of his death and no real conversion to Catholicism? Or will we get the merlin holland version?
I would love to see them tackle Oscar Wilde the Freemason whilst at the same time going to mass,Rome and flirting with converting
Or even if they took a stab at Oscar the outsider: a Protestant in catholic Ireland, an Irish man in England, bisexual man in a straight world and in some respects a spoofer amongst experts

@Oscarwildefanclub: Mr Everett is writing the script as well as directing and playing the lead role apparently.
