“Let’s Stay Together,” in the opening months of 1984, was the hearlding of the post-Ike, ‘new’-Tina emergence. I remember reading at the time that they were tinkering, trying to find the right formula for presentation, and the decision was made to get rid of the dancing girls -pseudo Ikettes- alongside Tina in “Together’s” video, less reliance on frantic dancing, and make it about Tina alone.
With that new visual approach, and a superb song, the following single was Tina’s rocket to the moon, and a touchstone hit of the summer of ’84.
I think Tina’s great, but I really hate it when people make a huge deal out of “retiring” only to return a few years later. I was convinced she was done with performing the way she was talking.
There is no ‘bad’ Tina performance. None.

I believe the song is called simply “The Best” not “Simply the Best”.

FYI… it’s Bob Mackie.
