M*A*S*H Star David Ogden Stiers Comes Out (To Find Love!)

David Ogden Stiers, who played Major Charles Winchester on M*A*S*H for six years, has now, at the age of 66, come out. Yahoooo! Why did it take so long? Standard Hollywood reasons: He feared it would cost him his career, which also included voice work in films like Beauty And The Beast, Lilo & Stitch, and Pocahontas, produced by that "family" company called Disney.

Says Stiers: "From the late 1980s until about seven or eight years ago, you would find certain individuals coming up to you, me, and advocating the position that since we were doing family fare that it would be best were the actors to maintain a certain palatability to parents. These parties likely had heard rumors or harbored suspicions about me and wanted to make sure no embarrassing incidents were forthcoming."

So why come out now? "I could claim noble reasons as coming out in order to move gay rights forward, but I must admit it is for far more selfish reasons. Now is the time I wish to find someone and I do not desire to force any potential partner to live a life of extreme discretion for me."

All together now: Awww!

Wow! I'm a huge M*A*S*H fan, I never suspected this. It makes me very happy to know one of the cast members from my favorite show is one of us. Welcome David! This is indeed great news!

66? This is news? I don't consider people who've lived most of their lives closeted gay…not that he has (perhaps it was just his professional life)…gay's a social identity. 66, though? Why bother…

All those years ago I had a secret sympathy for Charles Emerson Winchester III. Not a particularly likable character, but there was something about him and about the actor. A certain edge to his wit and a dignity in his aloofness. Nice one.

Unbelievable. I suppose next you'll be saying Fraser is only acting fey and David Hyde Pierce is secretly a five-chicks-a-night stud. Oh, and David Ogden, your mother always knew as well.

@Ted C.:

Yeah, where? :(

No offense to Lance Bass, but I think David's career would be a more interesting read.

A 66 year old comes out so he can get laid? Big deal. In the 48 years you spent as a closeted adult, you contributed to gay bashing. Go to hell, faggot.

Why bother at 66? No one probably wanted to fuck him 30 years ago, and they certainly won't now….without cash.
