IDK. I think y’all are reading into it.
I think it’s just a fun campaign about fudge and because B&J is based in Vermont, they said it’s legal. I mean we only just got Vermont passed on the gay marriage thing. Plus, the ad is place in Mass. So, why not say it’s legal in Mass.?

@scott ny’er: because ben & jerry’s is based in vermont.

This is a really interesting example of where the older, straight liberal community is with gay people today. They recognize the injustice of our situation, but they still think of us as “fudgepackers.” They don’t want us to be treated badly but they don’t us to have equality either. Frankly, that is why it is easier for them to supportive adding sexual minorities to hate crimes laws than it is to pass legislation that actually advances gay legislation. And it is our recognition of this that makes it hard for us to accept the Matthew Shephard Act as enough, if it is all Congress accomplishes this year.
It’s appropriate for gays to express both enthusiasm and anger over this, just as it was appropriate for some gay people to express anger over Obama’s “going to Iowa” joke and some to find it supportive.

Here’s how I looked at it, and maybe I’m reading waaaaaay too much into it: Vanilla = marriage, the generic, basic context in which the controversy exists. Brownie and Fudge = two items not usually featured in the same variety of ice cream because they are both based on chocolate, just in two different and yet similar forms. Whatever it is, I say good for them, it’s a great ad.
Or maybe they chose fudge because it’s awesome in ice cream. B&J uses it in tons of their many varieties.
I think the ad is awesome.

I continually am reminded of how I love “Ben & Jerry’s” ice cream. Thanks B&J
