On the last episode of The Voice, former child country star Billy Gilman battled with Andrew DeMuro, making it to the next round after both men did a striking rendition of Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror.”

After the sweeping performance, Blake Shelton said:
I don’t know that I’ve ever seen a more evenly matched battle. Billy has this voice that just cuts through everything — just like a laser voice. It’s so good, man! Then Andrew has all these little runs and things that he throws in that separates him from Billy. So, I don’t think you can go wrong here either way.”

Alicia Keys concurred.
“Billy your voice started out in this crystal space,” she says. “And then you think of where we are in the world. It ended up making me feel that maybe things aren’t so bad as they sometimes seem, so thank you for that.”

Miley Cyrus was into it. But Adam Levine very much wanted to eliminate Andrew, because Adam Levine is. a. monster.

Good for him. Glad he’s getting second wind in his career.

I don’t think it’s fair to let a former professional singer on a show like the voice.

He does as many concerts now as he will if he wins this thing. So far none of the Voice people have had any real success (unlike American Idol) This may get people taking about him again but it’s really not gonna change much (he’ll get a video and an album), so no, he shouldn’t be on this show. He has an unfair advantage.

@offbeatoh86: Agreed!

@offbeatoh86: @offbeatoh86: Billy was 11 at the time he got
a platinum record from his song One Voice. I highly call that a professial. He took a break when his voice started to change and now he’s trying to make a come back. This show is the best way to do that. He has an amazing voice, solid performer & sings with ease no matter what song he sings. His blind audition was one of the best I have ever seen & was effortless. He should win this hands down !!!

Ramble: It always makes me happy when there seems a sort of social space made for lgbt people. And that it’s not sort of allowed, as was Paul Lynde or Marlene Dietrich, to be ‘out’ from day one, seems a great change and needed. HOW long did we chit chat and gossip about Jodie..” Is she, is she not, what have your hears..yada yada ”
Billy Gilman did an amazing rendition of “Ben”, on a Micheal Jackson tribute show..it’s on youtube, if your curious. I loved his song years ago, “Down Here on Earth”, which sparked his career , which seems to have sort of not exploded into fame and fortune, but i’m hoping it will come to him. You can just tell–that Billy’s a great guy, and I wish him the best.
His audition song was Adele’s “When We Were Young”, and completely hit it out of the ballpark. I’m not the first to pose this question, but so often there’s seemingly a disproportionately-high number of lgbts in the music field, and, as a branch of the ‘arts’, i guess that’s not new news, as stereo-typical as the comment might come across. I’ve read some interesting pieces on the suggested or assumed WHYs to that point, but regardless, the grown-up Billy boy can saaaang!
(I’m more physically drawn to the other guy, so, with my luck, he’s either het or happily married in a same-gender, legally-recognized, civil marriage.)

It’s 5 weeks since this article appeared. Last night was the finals, so why hasn’t Queerty been covering this guy since then? Isn’t it gay news when a gay man has a chance to be the first out performer to EVER win a major singing talent competition? It would be nice to have the support of the gay community. Or at least some form of acknowledgment. He’s an incredible singer, and deserves to win, not that anyone would know that from following this website.
As for the “he shouldn’t be on this show” (because he had a record out when he was 11) crowd of detractors, apparently they have never watched “The Voice”, because since Season One, many of the contestants have had prior professional experience. The producers have never promoted the show as being for amateurs. If that’s what someone is looking for, then they should watch another show.
