The Chicago Tribune ran a profile this week on a local star wrestler who’s making a name for himself as a freshman at Colombia University.
But it was far from the typical local-boy-made-good piece.
While the Tribune did have positive words for Dylan Geick’s athletic achievements — he won a pair of state wrestling medals at Stevenson — the piece is more focused on Geick, the poet and soon-to-be novelist. And Geick, the social media star. And Geick, one half of a gay Insta-couple.

First off, most of these Instagram “stars” aren’t teens.

It makes me wonder how these people will handle the inevitable fall from grace, as they age out of the “pretty boy” phase, and lose those “perfect bodies” and pretty faces, and find themselves suddenly without their millions of “adoring fans”.
Will there suddenly be a lot of confused and lost men, who feel they have no identity other than their preceding “fame”?
Can these guys actually survive as anything other than the object of temporary internet affection?
Obviously, some will have careers and good lives, even great lives, becoming important people in our society. But that’s not the majority.

Cute guys and all and more power to them in this multimedia world. To each their own. I enjoyed wrestling in high school but ultimately I quit as I was in a weight division with a guy in my class that came from a long line of wrestlers; he knew moves I’d never possibly learn in a million years. It took the fun away and I gravitated toward basketball. And I’m so glad I did because of the cauliflower ears. This guy in this post is only a freshman and his ears (to my eyes anyway) are already destroyed. It’s always easy to pick out a former wrestler!
