Earlier this week we watched Jonathan Groff get pounded against a tree, learned the music Channing Tatum listens to while having sex and that Justin Bieber was mistaken for a girl at a Republican party, so here’s what you missed on Instagram:
It’s no surprise that the cast of Looking supports marriage equality. Daniel Franzese, Jonathan Groff, Murray Bartlett, Raul Castillo and Frankie J. Alvarez posed for the ongoing NOH8 campaign.

Wasn’t proposition 8 defeated a long time ago already? California has had marriage for a while now. Makes me wonder if they even know what the No H8 campaign was.
swhall
vive: that’s like saying the civil rights bill was passed a long time ago, so there’s no need to march anymore. No H8 may have started in CA in response to Prop 8, but the message of No Hate will unfortunately need to continue for many years after gay marriage is legal in all 50 states. Anti-gay discrimination will not end after marriage equality, in the US or around the world.
ingyaom
I’m kind of with vive on this – Prop 8 was overturned in 2010, so continuing to protest it now seems a little out-of-date.
vive
By the way, it’s not just this. Several details of the show itself seemed a bit off to me, as if the writers weren’t gay or maybe out of touch with gay culture in the U.S.
DarkZephyr
@vive: @ingyaom: The No H8 campaign is not just about protesting Prop 8 any longer. It hasn’t just been about that for a very long time.
From Wikipedia: “The NOH8 Campaign (NOH8 meaning “No Hate”) is a charitable organization in the United States whose mission is to promote marriage, gender and human equality through education, advocacy, social media, and visual protest.”
From the FAQ section of the NO H8 official website:
“Q. ARE YOU AFFILIATED WITH THE “NO ON 8” POLITICAL CAMPAIGN?
A. While NOH8 was originally inspired by the passage of Proposition 8 in California, the NOH8 Campaign has no affiliation to or connection with the ‘No on 8’ political ad campaign run in 2008 prior to the November 4th election.”
“Q. WHEN WILL THE NOH8 CAMPAIGN END?
A. The NOH8 Campaign is an ongoing project and has no end in site – so we will be continuing to take photos for the indefinite future.”
All official NO H8 photographs like the one above are taken by Adam Bouska, one of the co-founders.

@DarkZephyr, thank you for the clarification. Still, while I acknowledge their good intenmtions, it feels like they are trying to cling to relevance past their expiration date. And their denial now that they have to do with proposition 8 based on a lawyerly technicality (namely that they were not officially part of another anti-8 group) is at best ingenuous.
Cam
When I see the pic of the guys from “Looking” I want to think nice things, but with those NO H8 photos I just have to roll my eyes.
The Seattle Gay Paper did an expose on them a few years ago and found that they do not don’ate ANY money to any groups fighting for any gay rights.
All the money apparently just goes to fund the No H8 campaign, and since film doesn’t really cost that much money…….

DarkZephyr
@Cam: Personally, I never assumed that they donated money to groups that fight for gay rights. I guess I always figured that they were such a group themselves and that their method of doing it was visual protest. I wouldn’t have ever expected them to hand money over to other groups. It’d be pretty great if they did, I guess, but if I am going to donate to the NOH8 campaign, I would probably be doing it because I want them to have my money to keep doing what they are doing. Otherwise I would donate directly to the other groups. I *personally* feel that what they are doing is important work. It spreads awareness and powerfully shows who is standing with us. I am always happy and inspired when I see one of these photos.
Cam
@DarkZephyr:
I think the issue is, that the wording they use to describe it sounds like they ARE donating and fighting.
But really it is a cash flow into it’s founders. I have to say I do somewhat resent an organization that claimed to be formed to fight against Prop 8 and yet didn’t donate ANY money to fight it.
Now Prop 8 is gone, and they’re still charging $50.00 to get your picture taken with the money simply staying in the founder’s pocket.
DarkZephyr
@Cam: Well, it sounds like you do have a point then and that is incredibly disappointing to me. I liked having warm fuzzy feelings any time I saw one of these. It does kind of make me wonder, I suppose, because if you read the FAQ on the website it states that NOBODY but Adam Bouska is allowed to take these photos professionally. I suppose if personal gain wasn’t a huge factor for them and spreading the message was their ONLY goal they would gladly allow other photographers to take these photos. I mean Mr. Bouska can’t be everywhere at once. That being said, I will continue to admire the intent of the subjects OF the photos, regardless of the intent of the photographer.

@Darkzephyr: “NOBODY but Adam Bouska is allowed to take these photos professionally.”
Ugh, so it’s a commercial brand, not a movement.
Cam
@DarkZephyr:
I think that’s a fair attitude.
