North Carolina: More Than Half Oppose Gay Marriage Amendment

By Queerty Staff March 24, 2009 at 10:03am

But also, more than half don’t want legal recognition for same-sex couples. Huh? [Pam’s House Blend]

Pam’s conclusions were incorrect. She read the poll wrong. The poll shows that North Carolinians oppose a constitutional ban 50-43%. They also SUPPORT legal recognition for same sex couples 49-44%.

I am proud of my state. Jesse Helms aside North Carolina has always been a moderate state compared to the rest of the South. Hence being the only state in the South. that does not have a ban.

The state gvt is completely dominated by Democrats most are not gay friendly but . The leaders of the House and Senate are relatively supportive and this month buried the proposed marriage bill in commmittees that never meet. They have done this for years.

Defense is the best strategy we have now. There is not enough support to go on offense yet.

“I am proud of my state.” We’re not nearly as dumb as, oh, say…Mississippi or Alabama. Jesus Christ. The South is a friggin embarassment. I’m FROM there, I should know. Get the fuck OUT.

@Jon: Believe it or not some of us gays in the red states love our homes. We stay and fight and can see progress happening. Yes I readily agree that the South is slower than New England. You need to look at a map. My reality is in the majority of the country. It’s too bad you can’t be supportive of us instead of bashing your own home.

Jon, please don’t flame on your own demographic group. I think it’s great that North Carolinans oppose an amendment and support legal recognition of same-sex couples. I’m glad the leaders of the house and senate shunted the amendment into inactive committees. We’re all in this together. We’ll get our rights that much faster, and enjoy life more in the meantime, if we support each other.
