Colin Powell said a lot during his appearance on Meet the Press Sunday, and the primary takeaway is obviously his endorsement of Barack Obama for president.
But something else he said that may get lost in the shuffle is just as important, if not more so. He criticized the GOP for spreading the lie that Obama is a Muslim, but he also spoke at length about the harm that such accusations do to Muslim Americans in this country.
Powell specifically mentioned this photo of Elsheba Khan hugging the Arlington Cemetery gravestone of her son, a Muslim who died at the age of 20 while serving in Iraq.
Judging Americans like Khan or her dead son, Kareem, based solely on their religion “is not the way we should be doing it in America,” he said.

I’ve known and still do know anmber of Muslims throughout my life, and to be frank they are by and large a much more decent , tolerant group of people than Christians ever were or will be.
people pull out some of the extremists as examples of hatefull ness. that is a handful or less.
CHURCHILL-Y
Name one Muslim country were Gay people are treated as equals?
I can name you a number of Christian ones, and I’m not fond of religion of any sort at all.
ChicagoJimmy
CHURCHILL-Y and I appear to have at least two things in common. Lots of fondness for the cock, not much at all for the religion.
Anyway, I’m glad to say I saw some great video from a McCain rally where normal people of both christian and muslim faith took a fellow to task who was trying to spread some hate.
Check it out here:

When will he slam the GOP for slurring gays?

I’m w/M Shane. Muslims of any race or ethnicity have NEVER been bad neighbors where I’ve lived. They don’t blast crappy music at all hours; if they have pets, they’re well-tended and restrained; their kids are amazingly well behaved; they’re polite, warm even (one Turkish lady would bring my ex and I treats and such that her Turkish students club would make), they never have disturbed me to proselytize, they keep their properties clean, and I’ve never been harassed by *any* of them for being gay.
On the other hand, PLENTY of so-called Christians have conducted themselves repugnantly on multiple fronts. However, I don’t go around damning them for being white, Christian, or republicans; though if I were to use Churchill-y’s assbag rationale, I’m entitled to do so.
So if I had to pick, based on my own narrow experience, who are the better citizens…guess what?

ChicagoJimmy’s video link makes suspect the McCain camp is pro-dysfunctional family-oriented!

This is a nice story and all, but it doesn’t change the fact that Islam is not a good thing at all. Neither is Christianity (at least in it’s European Catholic and American Evangelical formats) but that’s not the topic. Islam is by far the most outrageously intolerant religious grouping in the world. Gays are executed in the Middle East for crying out loud. They’re EXECUTED. I don’t care how polite my Muslim neighbours are; Islam is not a peaceful or tolerant religion by and large.

CitizenGeek: it’s great that you can differentiate between the extreme forms of Christianity (i.e. European Catholicism and American Evangelism), but your ignorance shines through with your inability to differentiate between fundamentalist Islam from its more moderate or liberal factions.
I say you should do a little bit more research on the spectrum that exists within the Muslim faith as it does within Christianity, Judaism, and yes, even Buddhism and Hinduism! Religions are by no means monolithic, and there seems to be a faction to suit every possible personality type. If its of any help, you should consider religious factions – including atheism – LIKE political parties. Each one proposes its own view, and each one has a vast number of supporters / subscribers.
Good luck on your research!
