Listen, queerty.
I think gays in the blogosphere should discuss (and promote) the oddity that is “America’s Best Dance Crew’s” Fanny Pak, the gayest collective ever born into reality television existence. Looking vaguely like a giant hipster-ish neon ball, Fanny Pak consistently stage awesomely inventive dances that, to the observant homosexual viewer, reflect an undeniable gayness. No, the show isn’t the pinnacle of fine television. And yes, the judging panel includes Lil’ Mama. However, I keep watching it, and mostly because of the awesome, gayified spectacle that is Fanny Pak. Seeing as how a large portion of the show’s demographic includes the macho posturing “You Got Served”/”Step It Up” crowd, ABDC has consistently framed Fanny Pak as “unique,” possibly “too unique” for America. A couple of weeks ago one of the judges suggested that the guys in the group “start dancing like guys.” Lil Mama (bless her rhinestone-studded heart) clumsily defended the group by essentially claiming that Fanny Pak’s dancing simply reflected their “lifestyles” Anyway, the point is, this utterly average, middle America-friendly show features a hip, exciting, and definitely gay (all the guys, at least) dance crew. And they happen to be amazing. It’s fascinating to see how MTV and its viewers react to this. The commenters on the message boards for the group range from ardent fans to aggressive, homophobic, “fag/queer”-slinging middle americans. Check this shit out, queerty!
