SOUNDBITES — “Just like a joke based on race, it really depends on each individual joke, scenario, and person telling it. One of the faults of SNL that we were well aware of while I was on the show is that we often just went to a gay joke as a lazy, poorly crafted punch line. But a gay joke could be funny if it wasn’t lazy and it had some real wit to it.” —Rachel Dratch on the art of a gay joke [Advocate]

Were it not for Tina Fey/Sarah Palin and the election last year I doubt SNL would still be with us.

Where has Rachel been? I miss her humor! I saw a cameo on 30 Rock, but not much since then…she needs her own show. Debbie Downer!!

Well this was obvious to everyone who watched with half a brain. It turned my husband off the show for good because he hated all the homophobic humor that was so prevalent on the show during the late 90s into the 2000s. Not funny at all.
Marc
Yes Andy, and why was that?
I blame the cast at the time, remember who they were?
Smokey Martini
Yeah, Tina saved it and now it’s poo again.
So sad. So sad.

Does anyone know if Tina Fey, who was a writer for SNL, a writer for them in the late 1990s and early 2000s? just curious..the show has sucked and been bad since the late 1990s..I used to watch it just for Weekend Update when Tina Fey, Jimmy Fallon were on it….I also liked Amy Poeller when she and Tina did Weekend Update…since then not so much…as has been said..extra homophobic and really bad writing and skits..

Thanks Rachel for telling the truth. I always liked Rachel. Her impressions of Barbara Walters and Debbie Downer were hilarious.

SNL has some really great and funny actors on it and only a couple of the actors are actual writers on the show so they cant be faulted for the script theyre handed because they have a job to do ultimately.
not all of the cast members are funny and its had its ups and down but from many years of watching its obvious that the caliber of the show now depends on the guest host like justin timberlake who always has a funny show.
SNL is timeless and will probably never go away although they have waves of hilarity. if you dont like it dont watch it. theres millions of other people who will be thats why its been on the air 30 yrs.

Wah-waaaahhhhhh. (I couldn’t resist.)
I have fond memories of watching SNL when it was still a comedy show.

I blame and want to have sex with Andy Samberg. Does that make me a bad gay?
