Hey, you grow up as an artist in a big city, as James Dean said, you’re going to have one arm tied behind your back if you don’t accept people’s sexual flavors. You know, when I was a kid out here in L.A., I was homeless, I didn’t have any money and I was living in my car. I was 18. I wasn’t averse to going down to Santa Monica Boulevard and letting a guy buy me a sandwich. Know what I mean?…
You’re a lot more open to experimentation as a young man. And for me, being a young artist and broke in Los Angeles, I was exploring my sexual identity. And probably because of my middle-class, white blue-collar upbringing, I would have never had the opportunity to confront some of my own fears and prejudices had I not been hungry enough to be forced to challenge myself in that way.
– Thomas Jane, star of HBO’s Hung talking sex and sexuality with The LA Times
Dave
Oh, he is delightful. We haven’t had someone with such an ability to open his mouth and just have random asinine shit fall out for so long now.

Karl
is this account for real….? I thought I read somewhere that Thomas Jane had specifically refused to have sex scenes with any men in his ‘Hung’ series.
brian
A lot of men are like Thomas Jane. They are attracted to both men and women, albeit to varying degrees. His choice to behave only heterosexually is understandable and completely justifiable on the basis that he is predominantly attracted to women.
That and the fact that many men have reservations about the extreme promiscuity they witness on the gay male social scene. It’s a turn off when you see men act in such promiscuous fashions on the gay scene.
Men are very sexual creatures and are inherently bisexual except for a small percentage at either end of the spectrum.
Little Kiwi
the reality is that all men, gay and straight, have an interest in phalluses. we touch our units multiple times a day. when watchign straight porn straight males are still watching another man in a state of high-arousal being sexual with his stuff. it’s a fear of being perceived as “gay’ that makes straight males ignore this – the whole “eww gross” reaction to seeing naked males, or guys with hardons. it makes no sense, unless these same ‘straight’ guys freak out every time they see themselves naked or touch themselves.
all males know what an erect penis feels like. in reality, two guys who are comfortable with their heterosexuality *would* be able to get off together and not freak out. it’s the fear of “gayness” that keeps them from being able to – this is why it’s more common for women to “experiment” or having experiences with other women – not living with that patriarchal fear.
i bet if i asked all the homos on here who had a straight “jackoff buddy’ while growing up there’d be a whole lotta hands flying up in the air.
Donald
Sounds like it more for trade. He was not clear how active or passive his role was in these encounters.
Eric in Chicago
Let’s be honest HUNG is a total fantasy – he could never make a whole business out of having sex with Women. That teacher in Detroit would at LEAST be letting guys give him a BJ for cash. Until that happens this series is a joke.
Paz
@Little Kiwi: “it’s the fear of “gayness” that keeps them from being able to” There ARE guys who just have 0 interest or attraction to other guys. Just like i have 0 interest in kissing, sleeping with, or being anywhere near a vagina it’s a little unfair to assert that all men who love their penis’s should be completely comfortable around other penis’s >.<
Little Kiwi
Paz, i’m not saying they wanna suck on them. but the “EWWW GROSS!” reaction is not natural – it’s a societal “expectation” borne of fear: “Act grossed out or people will think you’re gay.”
it’s not the same with gay men and vaginas as (duh) gay men dont’ have vaginas. we don’t have female equipment, it remains wholly foreign. straight dudes, like gay dudes, have penises. it has nothing to do with attraction and everything to do with familiarity with the equipment.
you cannot compare a straight guy being around other naked guys and a gay guy being around vaginas.

James Dean is telling Thomas Jane now to come to my house and put his legs in the air immediately.
fredo777
@brian: I don’t think blowing a couple guys for food as a homeless youth means Thomas wants to have sex with men + women now (when he can certainly afford to buy his own sandwiches), but the fantasy of him playing on this team from time to time is pretty tasty.
christopher di spirito
Thomas Jane in the HBO movie *61 never looked hotter. I immediately became a fan and I would’ve bought him more than a sandwich. Maybe a car and a condo.
Dave Lara
Get the mayo and the meat, somebody, I’m makin sandwiches.
Dirty old gay guy
Interesting
@Little Kiwi: Straight men would have to say they hate their own penis to say “ewww to penis” It doesn’t mean they want to sleep with other men, but the whole ack factor is clearly societal. The proper analogy would be a woman saying ewww to vaginas because that would mean she finds her own vagina gross, which would again be weird.
ZZZZZ
Who cares he’s like 5 feet tall
shannon
THEY SHOULD HAVE BOUGHT YOUR FILTHY AS SOME SOPA AND WATER!!!!! YOUCK….( PURPOSE SPELLING)…..HE IS ONLY DOING CAUSE HE KNOWS THERE WILL BE THOSE SILLY DESPERATE GAY WHO WILL GO “OMG!! HE SLEPT WITH MEN! HE IS SOOOOO HIT! I MUST WATCH IS FAILING TV SHOW!!))
steve
Ok I don’t understand the connection with James Dean quote. To me James Dean is basically saying an orgasm is an orgasm. James is known to have been a rampant bi sexual just like Marlon Brando was.
This guy is hinting that he pimped himself out as teenager for food? Umm yeah not the same thing buddy. Amusing also how he says this AFTER his split from his wife
Or....
It amazes me how in a few words, so many of you think you can just paint in who he is, as if he were as simple as one of those color by number paintings. Dude is likely straight as an arrow. But then I’ve blown a straight boy or two in my day. Sometimes opportunity changes the circumstances. This hungry ass kid saw an opportunity and he changed his circumstances.

And to Shannon, I seriously doubt he or the cast and crew and execs behind this show are concerned with the 27 gay viewers of Hung. Do you really think they’re the lion’s share of the marketing demographic?
~PR~
@Or….: To your last part… nope! I’m gay, love him, but have no real interest in the show (though I’ve seen a couple episodes and they were pretty good. Nothing to become addicted to, but still decent.). He has also played a few gay roles, which I appreciate.
brian
A man who is sexually oriented only to women can still blow guys. Keep in mind that the act of blowing does not require arousal on the part of the person who is doing the blowing. It’s the blowee who becomes aroused, and not necessarily the blower.
It’s a similar paradigm to the known propensity of lesbians to put out for men because they want to become pregnant and have a child. The lesbian doesn’t need to be aroused in order for the sex act to proceed. She can simply lie back. Her ova are produced automatically, and thus there is no link between her level of arousal and the presentation of her ova for fertilization by the male.

HUNG is a great show and Thomas Jane is super hot in it, but I agree, it is total fantasy. There’s not much money in being a prostitute for women. That said, Thomas Jane has always been known as a weird dude around Hollywood. I’m not surprised by this at all. He was a broke (mostly straight) kid that sucked off a few guys for a little money. Big Deal. If only more straight guys could admit sexuality isn’t black and white, and for many of them, there are some homosexual leanings…to varying degrees of course.
RomanHans
> He was a broke (mostly straight) kid that sucked off a few guys for a little money.
I think you got your positions reversed.
M
So in other words, Thomas Jane is like a lot of actors who came to Hollywood with nothing and did what they had to do?
At least he’s in some GREAT company.
Dave
@15 I agree with Shannon.
I don’t know of any straight men at all who have ever had sex with men even when they were homeless or if they were addicted to drugs.
Thomas Jane should just come out as being bisexual since that’s what he is.
brian
Dave,
Just because you don’t know anyone, it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.
Honestly, some gay men need to think outside of the gay scene.
fredo777
@brian: Agreed. I think Dave is reading too much into this.
Besides, I think attitudes like that will only encourage more men to be closed-off about their non-traditional (?) sexual experiences.
Interesting
@brian: let’s play a game of likelihoods. Is it more likely that a straight guy, even a homeless one, will sleep with men for money or is more likely that a bisexual guy will sleep with men for money for sex?
Sure, its possible that this guy is straight. Its also possible that a lot of people lie after the fact because they aren’t comfortable being seen for soemone who likes penis as well as vagina. I am going to go with the later given he’s (a) an actor in Hollywood and (b) someone trying to shock to get his show some attention and (c) he lives in the United States where even bisexual men are not to be given jobs.
fredo777
@Interesting: If he’s secretly bi + didn’t want to cast any light on it, why would he even volunteer such information? That seems like a bit of a reach.
jason
What does it matter whether he’s bi, gay or straight? Why are you so obsessed with labels? You’re a bunch of label queens, that’s what you are.
You are absolutely obsessed with classifying people. You do it because you’re afraid that someone might not fit into your segregated mindsets. Your entire social scene is based on segregation and so is your mindset. Why don’t you fucking get out and mingle with the mainstream? Stop hiding in your gay bars and clubs like the cowards that you are.
If you had an ounce of true “gay pride”, you’d be out there showing it to the world instead of hiding it in the dark in some dismal and depressing gay joint.
DamnFool
The “mainstream” that you refer to so positively, has a love of “labels” as much as the people you are here trying to correct. If YOU got out more, you’d know that.
ZebraClan
“If only more straight guys could admit sexuality isn’t black and white, and for many of them, there are some homosexual leanings…to varying degrees of course”.
It’s irrelevant whether sexuality is black or white, or if someone admits it. Why are so many people eager for this great revelation like heaven is going to come down to earth if everyone claims some kind of bi/pansexuality? Everyone is born with a sexuality. Sexual orientation on the other hand, is something that people over time, cultivate through self-reflection in order to integrate both the sexual and social values of themselves in a (keyword) harmonious way. This is as much if not more so what a person “really is”. If a guy has had homosexual experiences, but LOVES women, then he is straight ultimately.
dannyboi2
@jason: oh got your panties in a bunch, it works both ways baby, str8 ppl hang in Str8 clubs, no different.. They also have st8 sex clubs 2…
jbqueernews04
@Donald: Precisely. The other commenters are choosing to avoid the topic of whether Jane decided ultimately that he LIKED this sexuality. I think it was just a phase.
