Last we checked, the “gay Super Bowl” was Pride. And the Olympics. And Memorial Day weekend. OK, any holiday really.
So by that logic, yes, Halloween is also the gay Super Bowl.

In an ad for the upcoming Halloween episode of The Real O’Neals, this metaphor is brought to life, and more importantly, to dance!
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
Since this is the first Halloween for fictional Kenny as an out and proud teen, he has big, big plans.

I saw the “gay phone” clip and I thought wow maybe I’ve seriously underestimated this show…however, this clip restores my faith in cynicism.
PRINCE OF SNARKNESS aka DIVKID
Lazy, predictable, smugly self-satisfied. But enough about me…this show is even worse.
Happyhomo
Sadly, I’ve tried two seasons and can’t get into it. I think the flaw is in the main actor and poor acting. He’s playing it as himself (a person probably very comfortable in his skin), rather than a newly out teenager, who would be more relateable. As a result you don’t care about him. Shame because the supporting cast is great. If not cancelled I’d build the show more around them.
Captain Obvious
@PRINCE OF SNARKNESS aka DIVKID: So basically it’s just like the real Dan Savage. Considering he told all white gay men to go out and call every black person they saw the N word after Obama was elected can we really be surprised this show sucks? His attitude sucks.
ABC has turned into NBC and NBC is oddly becoming watchable. Ever since Disney took over ABC has become an outlandish, unrelatable, mess. It’s really chock full of garbage. The only show I still watch on that network at this point is Blackish.
A half hour of Dan Savage’s little smug blog or whatever he calls it should save anyone an hour of his terrible show. He’s disturbingly nasty even in a “Dear Abby” style column. I’m fairly certain his fans are all entitled college kids who aren’t mentally developed enough to realize his rantings are not actually entertaining. The fact that he thinks he’s giving an adult perspective on life is scary.
joeyty
Bad show with tired stereotypes (of both gays and Irish-Americans).
RIGay
The Halloween episode got really “Cringe-worthy” FAST; I got through about the first third and just deleted from the DVR.

Halloween is GAY Christmas

Where is the show for gay Daria teenagers?
Next on SICK SAD WORLD: What happens when role models that feminists wouldn’t touch with a ten foot pole like cheerleaders are foisted upon gay youth as what they dream about being?

Becomes it is my agitated opinion that since we are trading in female cultural roles, gay men identify more with this:

When did the latter become what people want to be?
I must be old. *gets cane and dentures*

No, Halloween is gay Christmas. The Tony Awards are the gay Superbowl.
Lookyloo
Yikes. Is the a show embracing gay youth or belittling them?
Because the stereotyping game is strong – and I can’t tell if this commercial comes from a bigoted-mind or is just an inside joke thing.
And we wonder why average-presenting gay teens don’t come out of the closet more often in this day-and-age.
pisces-boi
I wish people would stop complaining about stereotype just because they aren’t able to relate to the type of character of the show. At the end of the day are a lot of gay men who can identify with this character and some who don’t; however, that doesn’t make this character harmful to anyone. So come down drama queens.

@Lookyloo: Sort of true. Why couldn’t they have shown him scoring a touchdown ?
joeyty
@pisces-boi: That’s sort of true, too.
joeyty
@Lookyloo: Also, it could be the gay inside joke of mocking Irish-Americans by using the character (and the actor, Noah Galvin ) for something so traditionally “queeny.” Hard to say. I guess Galvin is just feeling fortunate he’s working at ALL after he criticized those gay Hollywood bigwigs.

@pisces-boi:
Point taken. I’m less grumpy today. Even if I still want to hear Daria’s POV commentary on football and cheerleaders. 🙂
PRINCE OF SNARKNESS aka DIVKID
@adamnfool: Don’t apologise. You are correct. Gay men who claim to love femaleness (or femininity) only uphold the shallowest air-headed bimbo-iest cliches of femininity, the type long derided by feminists as regressive. “Oh but…irony!!!” Fuck off.
adamnfool
@PRINCE OF SNARKNESS aka DIVKID:
You’re comment contains truth and Lisa S./ L. Simpson taught me the nobility of complaining, which I utilize all too well.
But truth sometimes is complicated too. Variation abounds. It would be more important to figure out how to support the Darias then disparage the Britneys. Complaining on the web is easy, even if it’s true. Something I try to remind myself daily. 🙂

@adamnfool: “But truth sometimes is complicated too. Variation abounds”
True enough my sagacious friend.
There was Bea Arthur too. And I can’t demur.
adamnfool
@PRINCE OF SNARKNESS aka DIVKID:
Meh, calling the above all Britneys is still a rather strong value judgement on my part.
I should tone it down, and then look away from a screen.
adamnfool
Correction. Brittany is the character’s name.
