Over 100,000 protesters across the country and across the globe attended rallies and marched on Saturday in protest of California's Proposition 8, which outlawed same-sex marriage. From Fairbanks, Alaska, where 32 people stood with signs in 6 degree weather as snow fell to San Diego, where 25,000 people marched on an unseasonably hot autumn day that reached into the 90s, supporters of civil rights demanded equality.

"This is the first time in U.S. history that the majority voted to strip the rights of a minority. Who will be next?" asked Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Center CEO Lori Jean, who also credited young people as the driving force of the movement, saying "We now pass the torch to you!" The protests, organized via the website www.jointheimpact.com, spread through sites like Facebook, Myspace & Twitter.

Many of you sent in photos, videos and stories of the day. After the jump, we present some of these snapshots from across the country. You may want to grab a hankie.

Some bizarre backroom dealings at the North American Gay Amateur Athletic Alliance's Gay World Series. The softball league has strict rules that only allow two straight men on each club. The D2 team out of San Francisco were disqualified after being challenged for having too many straight men on the team. After a game, 6 players were taken to a meeting with officials and asked what sex they were they were "predominantly" attracted too. I guess it's only fair since it's a gay league, but it does seem amazingly silly that we refuse to allow straight people to play with us. You would think it would be seen as an advance that so many straight guys enjoy playing ball with gay guys. I agree with one of the players, "The rule made sense back in 1977. But it’s the 21st century now. What kind of message are you sending?"

"Seattle Opera is looking to build its audience by reaching out to lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender music fans. The arts organization announced three LGBT Nights at McCaw Hall during the upcoming 2008-09 season. At these designated performances, patrons may pay $100 for discounted main-floor orchestra seating, private intermission receptions (with wine, hors d'oeuvres and desserts) and admission to preshow lectures. The inaugural event — an Aug. 22 presentation of "Aida" — will be hosted by Seattle Opera trustee JJ McKay and Washington state Sen. Ed Murray." [Seattle Times]

A woman's lazy parenting sparked a controversy at a Seattle baseball game:

Sirbrina Guerrero says she was approached at a baseball game and told to stop kissing her girlfriend after a woman complained to staff at Seattle's Safeco Field that they were "groping and making out."

Guerrero was told by a seating host that the woman didn't want to explain to her son why two women were kissing, she said to KOMO 4 TV, but she refused to give in.

The ladies also took some time to snap shots of straight couples kissing, none of whom were reprimanded. If only we were surprised…

• Things are about to get very sticky for whore-loving Senator David Vitter:

The "D.C. Madam" served a subpoena Tuesday on Sen. David Vitter, R-La., requiring him to testify about his use of the Washington, D.C., escort service federal prosecutors say was a prostitution ring.

The subpoena calls on the freshman senator to testify at a federal court hearing Nov. 28 looking into the business operations of the $2 million escort service Deborah Jeane Palfrey operated in the nation's capital for 13 years.

And the Senate Ethics Committee remains silent.

• What do you do when you suspect your man's sticking other lovers? Smell his dick, of course.

• The Democrats seem poised to stop President Bush's recess appointment of anti-gay surgeon general nominee James Holsinger. Rather than calling a recess for the holidays, Senate Majority leader Harry Reid hopes legislatures will use "pro forma". 365Gay passes on Roll Call's extortionately expensive word:

Roll Call reports that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is considering technically canceling the recess. According to the report Reid is mulling a "pro forma" session. In essence it would mean several members of the Senate would show up on the floor every three days keeping the Senate session alive. With no recess Bush would not be able to make a recess appointment.

You're one smart son of a gun, Harry Reid.

Mike Webb's Former Friend Faces 28-years In Jail

accused-wince2.jpg
Seattle police seem to be one step closer to solving the Mike Webb murder case.

Webb, a radio disc jockey since the 1970s, went missing in May, leading some to suspect he left town. His landlord, however, found Webb's bludgeoned body wrapped in a tarp and stuffed in crawl space. A series of clues led police to a 28-year old homo named Scott White.

Webb, a gay radio personality, first met White last November, as White battled drug addiction. A former addict himself, Webb invited White into his home and helped him fight his demons. Unfortunately, it seems as if White may have returned the favor with a few ax blows.

It's a blessed day for Seattle's gay. Distraught over The Emerald City's lack of fag rag's, Phoenix transplants Michael Lehman and Peter Moraga have launched Seattle's first ever gay glossy, 'mo.

Lehman tells Seattle Times, "We very much thought that what was missing was something attractive, something that celebrates the community."

Available at around 200 locations throughout the city, 'mo promises to be more than just a bar rag. In fact, it's doing all it can to glisten and gleam without the requisite crotch shots. Says Lehman, who will serve as EIC,

We're not a bar mag…You're not going to see a lot of 20-year-old men in their underwear. We're both 40-something gay men, so the magazine probably hangs out at the 30-plus-year-old range. And we've gotten great feedback about that.

In addition to the requisite scene section, the magazine features features on gay power couples, art reviews and business tips. Looking at this cover, however, one wonders if the jocko-homos over at Sports Out Loud have some competition.

Police Investigating Attack as Hate Crime

coplights2.jpg
Seattle police are investigating a potential hate crime after a group attacked a gay man this weekend.

The unidentified man and his boyfriend were strolling down the road at 2:40am Sunday when one of the hateful group yelled an anti-gay epithet. Ballsy beyond belief, one of the gay boys approached the verbal attacker.

Unfortunately, the homophobe wasn't having it and immediately punched the man before throwing him to the ground. As happens, his friends decided to join the faggot-beating fun. Then, the cowards clamored into a vehicle and sped off.

The quick thinking queers managed to write down the license plate number, which police say belongs to a 2000 Honda. Hopefully they'll be able to track that Honda and its hateful owners.

Jorge Soto Vega may feel safer in the United States, but that doesn't mean he is safer. Consider this: two men have been sentenced to prison for two separate gay murders. The first concerns a Seattle business man named Kevin Shaw. A judge has ruled that 24-year old Michael Maiava did, in fact, murder Shaw and should be imprisoned for 48-years. In her ruling, Judge Theresa Doyle said:

The crime here was an unprovoked, cruel, completely in this court's opinion, senseless murder of a man who by all accounts was really a lovely person.

Maiava originally claimed he didn't kill Shaw, but then changed tracks and said Shaw attacked him, leaving him no other choice than to stab Shaw with an ice pick. Right…

Meanwhile, in Colorado, Jason Fiske has been sentenced to 22-years behind bars for his role in the 2005 killing of another gay Kevin: Kevin Hale. It seems Fiske and his friend Adam Hernandez met Hale at a bar and took offense to Hale's homo-advances. Naturally they had to defend their hetero-honor by taking Hale to a park and strangling him.

Hernandez pleaded guilty to manslaughter and theft last year and got thrown in the slammer for eight years. For his part, Fiske copped a deal and pleaded guilty to manslaughter, for which he got twelve years - the extra ten come from a robbery charge.

And people wonder why we don't leave our homes…

intern lance

In the next few weeks we’re going to ask you to say hello to our new interns. First up is Lance. Lance lives in Seattle and brings another West Coast perspective to the site. He’ll be writing, reporting, and searching for stories. Since he is 3,000 miles away from Queerty headquarters he’ll sadly miss traditional intern responsibilities like getting us coffee or cleaning the windows. Rather than listen to us, we’ll let Lance describe himself:

“My name is Lance. I work for a corporation; one of those huge nationwide corporations where you have an employee id number and use words like "metrics" and "collaborate" at least five times daily. I'm also a really gay black man. I'm 23 years old and entering my last quarter at the University of Washington where I'm completing my degree in Sociology. Working for the corporation sort of just happened to me—a means to and end to support my gay lifestyle while getting my degree. Who else is going to pay for my Prada man bag? Yet, it's been a really great experience in the big scheme of things and has fueled my passion for writing.

Having lived in Mississippi , southern Germany, and now in Seattle with my gay black self, I've cultivated somewhat of a unique perspective and have a couple things on my mind for sharing. I love my gays and I'm passionate about issues that affect us. And I do mean all issues; from ensuring that none of us have unibrows to ensuring that we have equal rights. They're both equally important, right? Plus, I'm a pop culture fanatic. Reading blogs is my religion. Ultimately, I'd like a writing career that could combine the two: my love for those things sociological in scope coupled with my desire to read every article in the world having to do with Jake Gyllenhaal and his new ‘it’ dog.”

If you’re a Seattle-based musical act, shop, theater, promoter, whatever, then Lance is your man. His email is lance@queerty.com

Say hello, send him ideas, and welcome him aboard.

• A new survey lets the cat out of the bag over homo TV habits. Gay men are all aflutter over A&E and Bravo and dykes love their HBO and ESPN.

Matthew Shepard's mom is speaking at a college in Montana and the entire campus is all worked up. But these party poopers are celebrating with protests and bomb threats. Welcome to Unabomber country.

• Still no lessons learned from Matt's senseless murder. Another homophobic attack left a London man dead this past weekend.

• A gay editor at the Village Voice (redundant, we know) is suing the publication for sexual harassment. The man alleges lewd jokes were made involving "gay men, lesbians, a Vietnamese worker, and a pregnant employee." Wait. Now we need to know the first part of the joke. We think it might be "A Vietnamese worker, a pregnant employee, and a lesbian walk into a bar to bitch slap a completely humorless gay editor?" Hysterical.

• Andy Towle has some shots from GQ of lusty teen NHLer Sidney Crosby. We like what we see. Drool over him now before he ends the season bruised and toothless.

• Happy birthday to our celluloid-loving faggy brothers and sisters in Seattle. The city's gay and lesbian film festival is 10 years old but thanks to makeup and good lighting doesn't look a day over 5.

Ian

Marc Jacobs may heart Lil’ Kim, but we heart Ian. No, no Ian is not our new boyfriend. He is not the lead singer of our new favorite band. Ian is a store and it is basically, fierce.

Seattle has always been home to unique style and a thriving arts culture. Anyone remember grunge? It is also home to one of our favorite boutiques. The shop carries designers as diverse as Nice Collective, G Star, Martin Margiela, and DSquared2, brands you won’t find in Macy’s.

Fodor’s
says, “Ian is a fabulous place to shop if you're a trendy young man or woman with a healthy bank account.” Best bet is to check in often and look for sales. Our last trip to Seattle we got some great deals that did not break the bank.
