What Will Be The Gay Song Of Summer For 2012?

With summer officially starting in just a few days, it’s time to take stock of the first crop of inescapable summer hits. But which will be crowned the inescapable song of summer? Some contenders, like “Call Me Maybe” came out a while back and have just stayed on our collective gay “repeat.” Others are only starting to bubble up—and some we just have a feeling about. Let the battle for Song of Summer 2012 begins !   “Call Me Maybe” Carly Rae Jepsen Um, duh. This one’s all but guaranteed to reign supreme this summer. Jepsen’s hit just went to Number One on the charts and we can’t imagine it going away anytime soon—whether we want it to or not!   Click through for more song of summer contenders. And add your own nominees in the comments section!
“Somebody That I Use To Know” (Tiësto Remix) Gotye Who would have thought that a quirky little break-up song would be a contender for most ubiquitous song of the summer? But Gotye’s little ditty is absurdly catchy. No one is immune, be they club kid or emo moper. Of course, on the dance floor, it’s got to be Dutch DJ Tiësto’s adrenaline-fueled remix.
“Turn Up the Radio” Madonna Though most of the press Madge is getting lately is about her onstage antics, this is the tune from MDNA we’ve got out money on for Song of Summer 2012. Almost from the minute the album leaked, gays were already predicting “Radio” would be blasting out of beach houses by July. She’d  be a fool not to release this baby as a single.
“We Are Young” Fun. This raucous indie-pop ditty already has massive cultural saturation in its favor yet, somehow, we’re still charmed by it. “Tonight, we are young / so we’ll set the world on fire.” Who doesn’t feel like that while waving a pina colada in the air at a sweaty summer BBQ?
http://youtu.be/BiEEJds8JFE “Glad You Came” The Wanted British boy-banders The Wanted’s cheeky homage to the female orgasm is all Ibiza, by way of the UK. Sounds nuts, but somehow, it captures that feeling of perpetual sunshine.
“Only The Horses” Scissor Sisters We kind of love that “Horses” already kind of sounds like a remix of itself. It may not get the massive airplay you’d normally associate with a summer hit, but we can’t imagine not hearing this on gay dance floors all season long.

“Sumertime Sadness” (Reich & Bleich Remix)
Lana Del Rey
We’re throwing this one in as our dark-horse candidate: Reich & Bleich’s remix of Lana Del Rey’s moody “Summertime Sadness” wipes away any trace of melancholy from the original track. And it’s an unofficial remix! Doesn’t that make you feel dangerous and cutting edge?

I kind of hate to admit it, because the song is terrible. But being in Rehoboth for the summer I have no qualms calling this one.

If you spend more than an hour in at Aqua or Blue Moon down here, I guarantee you will hear hear “Call Me Maybe”. Thankfully (I think) they have not put it in karaoke rotation yet, so at least there’s that.

  • mattsy

Im gonna go outside the box and select Lets Have A Kiki by Scissor Sisters as song of the summer. Not only b/c its a great fun song, but also b/c I HATE most of the songs chosen here, esp WE R YOUNG!!! UG I HATE THAT SONG!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Jon

    Call me maybe 😀 CRJ

  • Scott

In what universe does this author live? None of these songs will be the anthem of summer. “Party in the USA” is an anthem. “It’s Raining Men” is an anthem. The summer anthem is lively and gets you up to dance. You turn it up loud in the car and sing along. It appeals to gay men and straight women. My candidate’s are:

    1) One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful”. Good harmonies and who doesn’t want to be told that being shy gets a boy hot under the collar?

    2) Kelly Clarkson’s “Stronger”. Similar message to “I Will Survive”.

    3) Dark horse candidate: Korean group Boyfriend’s single “Boyfriend”. Released in 2011 so it may not be eligible for summer of 2012 but who in America has heard it?

    4) Carly Rae’s “Call Me Maybe”. The only reason this song made the list is the video’s hot guy and ending. When you sing it in the car you’ll remember his smile.

Of all the tracks mentioned, “Only The Horses” has the best chance at being the gay anthem of the summer. With that said, there are many more to choose from. Clarkson’s “Stronger”, Adam Lambert’s “Never Close Our Eyes” and “Outlaws of Love” or Scissor Sisters’ “Let’s Have a Kiki”

Is there such a thing as a gay song? Oh, my, I must have missed the memo from Gay Inc. Gay Inc is telling us that there are such things as gay songs. Therefore, there must be such a thing as a “gay song”.

Gee, I’ll have to check to see if there’s a dating service for these so-called gay songs. Grindr profile, maybe?

No. 6 · jason wrote, “Is there such a thing as a gay song?”

    Try this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ITSdd0fpCMY

    (the song doesn’t start immediately)

  • Joe

Lana Del Rey for the win!!!!

  • Jay

    I agree with Jason. It’s certainly NOT going to be Cazwell’s r a c i s t shit song “Rice n Beans”.

  • Elloreigh

I don’t know about “gay song of summer 2012”, but Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me, Maybe” is the only one of these that has the kind of pop appeal to end up rivaling Katy Perry’s “Last Friday Night” of last summer and her song “California Gurls” from the summer before that.

Not saying it’s the ‘best song ever’; I’m just saying it has broad appeal and the kind of happy, bouncy feel required for a summer pop smash hit.

Here’s a funny parody of Call Me Maybe by some guys in the burbs. It’s called Call Me Gaybe:

  • Cesar Silva

I only seem to agree with Lana del Rey’s “Summertime Sadness”…ahhh!

  • Matt

Ugh, Goyte needs to go away and go away fast.

  • jason

Here’s yet another parody of Call Me Maybe, this time by some college guys:

What, not a single suggestion that the song of the summer could in fact be in the Magic Mike movie??? Is the str8t girl on v/c? As for the gay song of Summer ’12, if Queerty suggests it, def NOT the gay song of Summer ’12. Note to Queerty: when it comes to anyone song becoming the summer anthem, yes, that is the proper term, summer anthem (gay song of the summer, cringe), no one decides what it is, no one votes, it just happens, in a gay birds taking flight sort of way.

  • Red Assault

I’m sure you mean “the most over-played pop song” and not “gay song.”

None of these are gay songs.

  • Zane

I’ll put in a plug for “Leave Your Shoes On.” I agree with everyone who said “Let’s Have a Kiki” though.

  • Lodgebear

Song of the summer should be “Titanium” by David Guetta featuring Sia. A great dance anthem for the summer.

  • jason

  • SD

    Let It Go by Dragonette

  • DouggSeven

I go up to cottage country every weekend in northern Ontario and the song you hear everywhere is Nicki Minaj’s Starships. I’d have to vote that song of the summer in my circle. We Are Young and Call Me Maybe are good choices, but everything else wasn’t even close. Turn Up The Radio by Madonna – as a summer song? Other than listening to the clip provided for 15 seconds and having to turn it off quickly, I’ve never even heard of it – and hopefully will never have to again.

  • jason

Starships is awful. It sounds like a song by Mickey Mouse. Nicki Minaj has no talent at all.

  • DouggSeven

@jason: It’s a good, fun pop song. And everyone knows talent is within the producers of pop music, never the artist – ironically so.

  • Belize

@DouggSeven: Not true. There are a lot of artists within the chamber pop and baroque pop category who write, produce and pretty much do everything else for their own music. Just because they’re not mainstream doesn’t mean that they’re not “pop” considering their compositions.

  • Belize

@jason: “Gee, I’ll have to check to see if there’s a dating service for these so-called gay songs. Grindr profile, maybe?”

Just so you know, dating services are not miracle workers. They can only do so much for witches like you. 🙂

  • Belize

Most of these “summer songs” are cheapened by remixes while some are created through plainly lazy song writing. Often times, people equate accessibility with quality. A really good song should make you feel alive, not give you the delusion that life is easy.

  • DouggSeven

@Belize: You know exactly what I meant. Nice troll attempt though.

  • Tadpolicus Wex

Since the vast majority of these songs were produced in 2011 – I’m gonna choose another 2011 song to rep Summer 2012, JLS Take A Chance On Me Wideboys Extended Mix…super bass, trance and a huge hook OR Wynter Gordon’s Buy My Love!

  • AshNYC

    Scissor Sisters—Let’s Have a Kiki!

  • NovaNardis

If not Call Me Maybe, my suggestion would be Starships. Again, not that it’s good music. 😉 But it is catchy.

  • QJ201

@jason: it’s like a PG rated Andrew Christian vid with even younger guys.

  • JON

I really like the song, but the original version. I can relate to the lyrics. It happened to me…when my supposed best friend and partner broke up with me. It was like we were never even together. It sucks how humans treat one another.

  • jason

Unfortunately, gay men have lost their taste in real music. Nowadays, they dance to computer-generated crap to complement their drug use. Sad, utterly sad…the downfall of our community.

  • Liam

    The A & F video was a lot better.

  • Harry

Call Me Maybe all the way!

  • Dave

    Gotye sucks.

  • chpinnlr

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lM2d28lBM3k This is a much beter Scissor Sister song from there new album!

  • ldiv

Glad You Came is over a year old. I remember listening to it last summer and it was great but it’s a bit late to be jumping on it now…

  • Cherry Groove

I think it’s safe to say that homosexuals will continue to fall in love in a hopeless place and keep dancing on their own well into the late hazy days of summer.

  • Mark

Only the Horses by Scissor Sister will be the song of the Summer!!!

  • Oreo

I work at a bar and I feel every other song is “Call me Baby” or there is a damn drag queen performing it… Yes its catchy but I believe it shouldn’t be Summer Song. My top 5 in no particular order:

    1) Only the Horses – Scissor Sister
    2) Titanium – David Guetta
    3) Work Hard, Play Hard – Wiz Khalifa
    4) F*ckin Best Song Ever – Wallpaper
    5) Turn up the Muisc – Chris Brown

  • Trelin

    Rihanna “Do Ya Thang”
