Reports are flooding in that a man was taken down by attendees at today’s Jerusalem Pride Parade after he stabbed six people with a large knife.
The man has since been identified as Yishai Schlissel, an ultra-Orthodox Jew who was released from prison three weeks ago after serving 10 years of a 12-year sentence for stabbing three people at Jerusalem Pride in 2005. We wish were making this shit up.
One woman was critically wounded, two men were moderately wounded, and another two men and a woman suffered light injuries, Haaretz reports. All the wounded were about 30 years old.
The newspaper is also reporting Schlissel distributed fliers announcing his intentions before the attack.

@PLAYS WELL WITH OTHERS: I heard about that too and didnt want to believe it until I saw a reaction to the jewish gay float by an orthodoxed jew at NYC Pride in 1989. He was told to wait by the police officer before he could cross the street and he not only got belligerent but ended up being arrested because he was going to cross in front of it anyway.
When they slapped the cuffs on him it was then that I noticed that it was a gay jewish groups float. The first thing that popped in my head was that group and wondered then had he pulled an UZI from under his coat would he have sprayed just the float or the crowd. They hate gay jews because they don’t add to the population like the rest of them.

Christianity is often at the forefront of ridicule in America because it is the predominant religion. Judaism has the mother lode of fucked up tenets, but American Jews pretty much keep to themselves and surprisingly, Reformed Jews tend to be more accepting of LGBT individuals (at least from my subjective standpoint). Islam, on the other hand, does get the kid glove treatment, namely because American Muslims are often subjected to attacks from ignorant morons, and many of the liberal mediums juxtapose criticism of Islam’s barbarism with attacks on Muslims in general. I don’t think anyone downplays the harm OTHER religious people of different faiths can cause, but since this isn’t an American incident, the Christian remarks come off as red herrings.
Fundamentalists of any faith are dangerous, because they show you exactly what it looks like to take such archaic hogwash literally.

I’m kind of amazed that after what he did, the pictures of him being restrained don’t feature his skull being stomped into the asphalt. Amazed and just a little disappointed. I’m kinda’ of the opinion that if someone attacks you with lethal intent, the fight isn’t over– and the attacked person shouldn’t *let* the fight be over– until somebody’s cold and going into the ground. I’d be the last one to defend religious extremism of any kind, but for someone to do this right after being released from prison after 10 years for doing the same thing, he must be have a serious mental disturbance. Israel has some of the best mental health care in the world. I think a long stint in the loony bin might be in order.
On another note, it is disturbing, but not surprising, that stories like this tend to bring out the latent anti-Semitism in many people. By any measure of tolerance and acceptance of gay people, Jews rate at the top. Unfortunately, Hasidim (so-called “ultra-orthodox”) are a glaring and disturbing exception. One would hope that people who have historically experienced so much oppression would know better.
