Security seemed to be MIA during a football match between Portugal and Netherlands earlier today as a gaggle of overzealous fans stormed the field and showered Cristiano Ronaldo in kisses.

One man managed to give Ronaldo a big old smooch right on the face. Another pranced out on to the pitch to give the footballer a quick peck on the chest. And that’s when security got involved.

Ronaldo didn’t seem exactly thrilled by the affection but he was ultimately a pretty good sport about the whole thing, all things considered.
Watch.

So… two fans ran onto the field and engaged in physical contact with Ronaldo absent his consent?
That’s called assault, not ‘overzealous fans make out…’. Swap Ronaldo out with a female athlete and I guarantee that you would not approach the article from the same perspective. Kudos to Ronaldo for keeping a calm demeanor while this was going on, but he clearly seems irritated by the interruption and the unwanted contact.
I’m amazed security didn’t apprehend the two fans the moment they stepped onto the field.

Preach. hypocrisy at its finest. (Oh dear will this be deleted now?!?)
prarie pup
Agreed, Kieru. Those two are lucky they didn’t try that in “trigger happy” America; they’d have been gunned down by security personnel.
jd.cali
Agreed. They should be banned from that arena at a minimum. Fame hungry losers.
And yeah, good for Ronaldo. I can’t say I’d be so calm.

Putting myself in Ronaldo’s position, it must be scary to have some random guy run up to you and plant a kiss on your cheek. Security definitely dropped the ball there.
The difficult part for Ronaldo is that he has to be *very* careful about how he comments upon this incident–even though he is the victim here. Basically, anything other than a good-natured dismissive tone could be unfairly construed as homophobia.
I see some guys at the gym being very careful to cover up their privates by putting on a towel over their shorts and then dropping the shorts. This behavior has actually come up for discussion on these boards and it amazes me that some consider that to be homophobic–as if the guy has an obligation to display himself for the excitement of the viewer.
As a gay guy myself, we’ve got to check ourselves sometimes or risk alienating people who would be our allies.
Anyway, I don’t mean to exaggerate what happens–it was just a peck on the cheek and I don’t the guy should get a disproportionate punishment, but maybe a night in jail, a fine and a ban from the games would be good.

Who the hell is complaining about how other guys change at the gym? I’m only concerned about being polite and getting my work out done in a timely manner whenever I go. Sure, there are hot guys changing around you, but the golden rule applies everywhere, and I would not appreciate another guy eyebanging me when I’m changing.
scotshot
I agree it must be downright scary to have a guy rush up to you and kiss you. How would these guys react to someone with a gun or knife.
You are aware. of course, that heterosexual men themselves are famous for checking out a guy’s package. Slut shame yourself for being a self hating gay.
Guys that cover themselves with a towel at the gym to keep their”jewels” from being seen are either too, too paranoid about their masculinity or trying to cover a lifelong embarrassment.
Troyfight
Self-centered fans….pretty sad…. Maybe after a game, but during?…uggh.

I saw a Diana Ross concert in Paris many years ago, where she came on from the back of theater, singing as she talked toward the stage. An overzealous fan jumped out of his seat and tried to kiss her on her mouth. She bit down on his lip and shoved him hard enough to send him flying backwards, all without missing a beat of the song. When she got on stage, she made the orchestra stop and apologized saying: “I love you too, baby.” As an entertainer myself (though galaxies away from her level) her professionalism was thrilling.

She’s the best!

I heard Neil Patrick Harris, on a news show, SCREAM “Don’t touch me!” at a woman as he was coming out a building. We’re complete strangers to these stars, no matter how much we love them.

It IS tricky to be in the lime lights, Very cool response of Ronaldo
Catholicslutbox
Very cool? Did you not see his expressions? Dude was livid.
I don’t see the appeal. There are way better looking soccer players out there.

isnt that the same guy that smooched rafael nadal some years back?

Portugal is one of the most gay-friendly nations (being the 8th country to have marriage equality), and Ronaldo’s restrained reaction reflects that. He was probably more annoyed with the security breach than the homoerotic aspect.
Tennis superstar Rafael Nadal had a similar incident at the US Open. Nadal’s very gay-positive reaction is a reflection of Spain being among the most gay-friendly nations. It’s one of the few countries, for example, that treat gay and straight blood donors equally. And Spain was the 3rd nation to have marriage equality (beating Canada by 2 weeks in 2005, and the US by a decade. Shame on the US!).
After the initial shock, the topless Nadal seemed to have actually wanted to embrace the fan back. And he had some sweet comments about the incident at a press conference. While applauded by many, especially gays, his generous reaction was also criticized for encouraging such security breaches. A New York Times article once called Nadal one of the sweetest players on the circuit, a real mama’s boy. This encounter was notable because Nadal was topless, the man kissed him and said, “i love you,” and Nadal’s gay-positive reaction, both during they incident and at the press conference.
Watch the great video here.

Nadal’s rival, Roger Federer, has had a similar incidents but he did not take them
well. Although he remained calm during the incidents, he [justifiably] made a big stink about security afterwards. In his defense, not all of his encounters were benign. Many players still remember the incident where Monica Seles was stabbed by a crazed fan of her rival, Stefi Graff.

Ronaldo loves the attention! Watch him looking at the screens that show him after making a goal again, he just loves watching himself, and he loves all the attention brought on by a fan smooching him! Ronaldo is minimally bisexual, if not 100% gay! He´s fooling around with the boys, as long as he´s been around!
Me2
What an invasion of personal space!! I would have been beyond livid!!! A part of me wishes Ronaldo had punched him in the face and knocked him a few feet back. This idiot NEVER should’ve been allowed to get so close. If I were Ronaldo, I would demand that the entire security team be fired or I would go on strike. Today it’s a kiss from an over zealous fan, tomorrow it could be a bullet or something from a deranged stalker.
Captain Obvious
His brows loved it though.

I think Ronaldo is gay. Wish he’d come out of the closet. Would be nice to have an out, gay, soccer guy. Anyway… what those fans did, wasn’t cool. Regardless of whether it was a man or a woman who tried to kiss him, Ronaldo didn’t ask for it, and he didn’t want it. Those fans should be banned tbh.
Kieru
> Would be nice to have an out, gay, soccer guy
Liam Davis has been out for roughly 5 years now and plays for an English soccer team. Robbie Rogers came out in 2013 and became the first openly-gay athlete to compete in a top-ranked North American team.
The list expands exponentially if you accept coaches, or allow for University-level teams.

The Arab way of greeting involves kissing both cheeks; one kiss per cheek, or the Saudi version which is three kisses on the right cheek – I usually pass and stick to a hand shake, UNLESS the guy is hottttt – Then I try not to use my tongue.
The first guy who kissed Ronaldo is cute.
ptb2016
Ans the French greet each other with a kiss on both cheeks, even strangers of the same sex. No biggie in warm countries. I agree it was the security breach that Ronaldo didn’t like, and if one recalls what happened to Monica Seles security needs to be stepped up. Who knows what some crazed fan might bring to the match?
