When the Beat Drops won the top prizes at Frameline42, and at Outfest this summer.

And it’s easy to see why.

The provocative documentary, directed by Jamal Sims and produced by Jordan Finnegan and World of Wonder co-founders Fenton Bailey & Randy Barbato, explores the rise of “bucking,” a dance trend created as a response to the women-only world of majorette routines. Tired of feeling left out, a group of gay men began performing majorette routines in underground clubs.

As with the dance ball scene of yore, bucking has inspired nationwide competitions. When the Beat Drops follows a group of buckers on the way to a competition in Atlanta as they rehearse, prepare, and discuss how finding the bucking community has changed their lives.

This exclusive Queerty clip introduces viewers to Napoleon, a longtime bucker and school teacher. Napoleon risks his career by performing as a bucker in a dress. As a music instructor and staunch anti-bullying advocate, bucking fits with his overall life philosophy of releasing inhibitions and living personal truth.

When the Beat Drops airs on Logo August 9.
