Former Trump associate Sidney Powell flipped on him last week. Powell, alongside others, was charged in the election interference case the former President faces in Georgia.

Powell, a lawyer, pleaded guilty Thursday to helping the President attempt to overturn the election result in the state. She also agreed to cooperate with prosecutors and testify against other defendants.

Powell is the second defendant to plead guilty, following in the footsteps of bail bondsman Scott Hall earlier in the month. On Friday, a day after Powell, another lawyer in the case, Kenneth Chesebro, also pleaded guilty.

For pleading guilty, Powell received a sentence of six years on probation. She was also fined $6,000.

Trump’s denial

This is all, of course, pretty bad news for Trump. He fully denies the RICO charges leveled against him. His reaction to Powell pleading guilty? He posted a message on Truth Social denying she was ever actually his attorney.

“Despite the Fake News reports to the contrary, and without even reaching out to ask the Trump Campaign, MS. POWELL WAS NOT MY ATTORNEY, AND NEVER WAS. In fact, she would have been conflicted,” the former president said. He went on to say Powell represented General Mike Flynn.

Trump’s attempts to distance himself from Powell prompted eye-rolls on the internet. After all, he formerly boasted of her joining his legal team.

Powell also appeared before the January 6 committee, which labeled her as a “Former Trump Campaign Attorney”. In her testimony, Powell talked about Trump asking her to be “special counsel” to help address the possibility of election interference. Trump never disputed this before now.

In November 2020, Rudy Guiliani also gave a press conference, accompanied by Sidney Powell. He talked of her being a lawyer acting on behalf of Trump.

George Takei

It is, of course, possible Powell was working for Guiliani and not directly for Trump. However, as mentioned, there was no such denial when Powell appeared before the January 6 committee.

LGBTQ advocate George Takei was among those to question if Trump had thought through his rush to distance himself from Powell. The actor reminded the former President that if Powell was never his attorney, none of their conversations would be protected through attorney-client privilege.
