It’s always nice when someone in the LGBTQ community hits the big leagues, so a big congrats to comic Julio Torres for getting hired on as a writer for Saturday Night Live.
But while the Brooklyn-based comic may take pride in his heritage and being out, much of his material is focused on being a space-prince. Because of course it is.
“I’ve never been good or too interested in making jokes about or having material about being Latino or being gay or any of those things,” Torres said in an interview with Brokelyn. “They’re very much part of who and what I am, but I feel like the one sort of label that I do feel a strong creative connection with…is the idea of being from elsewhere.”
Below find some samplings of Torres’ standup on YouTube, and look forward to some of his signature zaniness on SNL:

Wow, SNL fired the few funny cast members it had left and hired more mediocrity for social reasons. If you’ve ever seen this guy’s stand up, you’ll immediately see why he’s clearly a “diversity hire”.

Ok I tried. I really wanted to like his act. Especially when I heard he doesn’t use his Hispanic heritage like another George Lopez. Meh. Maybe I just don’t get it.
PRINCE OF SNARKNESS aka DIVKID
Let’s hope he’s been holding back the good stuff.
PRINCE OF SNARKNESS aka DIVKID
That is one helluva sensitively attuned and refined audience

@PRINCE OF SNARKNESS aka DIVKID: Macauley Culkin Show usually runs at Shea Stadium (the fake one) in Bushwick, and Paste Studios is a rarefied little NYC spot for experimental music, etc., affiliated with Paste Magazine (in Atlanta), so you’re right about the audience. I think some of his shtick is funny, very dry, almost like the earliest SNL writers.

Torres’ standup act seems very NYC centric but, apparently he co-wrote Mermaid Intern, which is kinda inspired.
Maybe Julio Torres’ appeal is his comedy writing

I just watched both clips and didn’t laugh once. For the past few years the only funny parts of SNL are the opening skit and maybe the 1st one after that — so basically you can turn it off after that. From watching g this guys standup I doubt he will bring anything to the table.

Hey NBC try something new and bold.try making a comedy version of SNL The show hasn’t been funny in 25 years its a dead horse.

He looks really young. Makes me think the cast and writers get younger every season. I noticed MadTV is back and it stinks too even though they brought back all the old cast. What made SNL funny were regular characters like Bill Hader’s Stephan (I peed on myself the first time he appeared). I can’t name one regular character now. Today you have to go blue like Amy Schumer to get laughs.

Race to the bottom for diversity’s sake.
