Singer/actor Harry Styles has raised a few eyebrows in Hollywood with the announcement of his next project: the queer drama My Policeman.
Based on the story from author Bethan Roberts, My Policeman follows Tom (Styles), a handsome cop who falls for a handsome museum curator named Patrick. The two are instantly smitten with one another, but given the setting of the 1950s, Tom fears they can never be together. Instead, he marries the schoolteacher Marion, and a tense love triangle develops.
Tony Award winner Michael Grandage will direct from a script by Oscar-nominated Philiadelphia writer Ron Nyswaner. Greg Berlanti, Robbie Rogers, Sarah Schechter, Cora Palfrey and Philip Herd have come aboard to produce for Amazon Studios. Actress Lily James is also in final negotiations to play the role of Marion.

How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
Though he rose to fame as a musician, leading the boy band One Direction, Harry Styles has waded into acting roles in recent years, taking on a part in the Christopher Nolan film Dunkirk. My Policeman will also mark his most sizable role to date. Throughout his career, Styles has also dated a number of high profile women, including models Caroline Flack and Camille Rowe. Styles has rejected labels to his sexuality, however, refusing to confirm nor deny his rumored sexual relationships with men. In a 2019 interview with The Guardian, he commented “I just think sexuality’s something that’s fun. Honestly? I can’t say I’ve given it any more thought than that.”

He already went gay for euphoria

How nice for Harry
Talk about Privilege. So many LGBTQ kids and people don’t have the ability to not think about their sexuality since every day they are fired, attacked, killed, etc. for it.
xanadude
What Cam said! Exactly.
CurtisIsTheOne
Well, of course if one has 75 Million Dollars in the bank, one does, indeed, have the privilege of NOT having to think too much about one’s sexuality. Tell that to the homeless LGBTQ youth or members of the TRANS community who are getting murdered in record numbers. I am SICK and TIRED of Harry Styles “flirting” with his sexuality to garner more attention. I am also EQUALLY DISGUSTED AT QUEERTY for the “is he or isn’t he” game which is used to cater to moronic readers who may give a shit about that stuff.
Doctor Benway
So what? Because some LGBT people struggle with their sexuality, he’s not allowed to have fun with his?
Nobody likes the jealous bitchy queen, honey.
Donston
When are you gonna stop trying to guilt people out of the closet? That attitude doesn’t do shit for anyone, and no one owes anybody anything just because they happen to be famous or a public figure. While Harry has made it clear that he fools around with dudes sometimes. He has not tried to hide that. And he doesn’t seem to mind that a good percentage of his fan base sees him as “queer”. He doesn’t want to go into the details of his orientation, which is absolutely his right not to. He hasn’t adhered to an identity or had a public same-sex relationships. All of that is as well his right. And he’s incredibly young, famous and still “finding himself”. Shaming him or putting pressure on him is not the way to go.
He does indeed have a certain amount of privileges. He’s rich, white and conventionally good-looking (at least in many people’s eyes). He also isn’t surrounded by homophobia. While appearing to be mostly into chicks and only having public hetero relationships means he doesn’t have to deal with being seen as “gay” or deal with his female fan base being threatened by guys or seeing them as “romantic rivals”. In today’s world if you’re a pretty white boy you can maintain your success and a female following while being openly “queer-ish”. You just can’t be “gay” or come off too into dudes or make it clear you have homo relationship ambitions. All of these things do represent privilege. Harry has however directly and indirectly discussed some of these privileges. So, it’s not like he isn’t aware and willing to acknowledge them. Stop being bitter.

It’s also a crock of steaming shit lol. If he really were some sheltered guy raised in a liberal-verse, I’d roll my eyes, but I’d get it. But he’s spent years as a massive star with literally an army of PR people, managers, handlers, etc., paid to cultivate his image and school him on the dos and don’ts of being and remaining a celebrity. The idea that he’s never thought about sexuality as more than fun is ridiculous. I
Donston
Chi eg, I will admit that I don’t really buy that either. Maybe he finds “doing whatever for whatever sake” to be fun on a personal level. A lot of people do no matter their identity or what they reveal to people. But he’s been famous since his mid-teens. And he’s a mainstream pop star. There’s no doubt his image and how he’s presents himself to the public is very well calculated. Still, he really hasn’t done or said anything that’s worth shaming him for.
Cam
@Donston
Except that isn’t what I said. I could care less if Harry is in the closet or not. His dismissing something that causes other people to be murdered as “Fun” and playing games with it, is absolutely an example of privilege. Since that is literally what I wrote, I’m curious as to why you created a false narrative and then wrote out an attack on it.
Donston
Because it’s his right to see playing around with sexuality and experimentation as “fun”. People aren’t supposed to have fun in their sex lives? Everyone must be miserable and struggle must “come out” and commit themselves to some identity before the age of 30? That’s not the way shit goes. It never has been. You act like the dude hasn’t been an “ally” (whatever that’s supposed to mean) and that he doesn’t acknowledge his privilege. He’s young and privileged and that quote was lame. But I don’t look for young pop stars to know what to say. Just don’t say dumb shit. And that wasn’t dumb shit. He’s speaking about himself and his life not others.
Res1
@ Donston Why is the threshold always age 30 for maturity? Is 27 not an adult? 30 minus 3 is 27. Anything over the age of 22 is a full-fledged adult: one doesn’t turn age 30 and suddenly get it together.
Donston
Res1, I don’t really see your post being relevant to mine. It’s just a random age. I could have picked 35 if I wanted to. All my points remain the same.
CityguyUSA
Great thought.
Res1
@ Donston it’s relevant because you’re making excuses for grown men. Doesn’t matter if he’s 25 or 30. He’s a full-fledged adult whose boy crushes should have peaked when he was 19 in One Direction. The mentality that one doesn’t grow up until 30 is why we have been making so many excuses for millennials who have failed to launch. The excuse that one is exploring his/her sexuality at 27 is absurd. Men who throw away alternative lifestyles once they hit 30, never planned on homoin’ it all the way. That’s fine… but I can see why that would be problematic for those who have and are dying because of their sexual orientation. We can’t just lock our closets and throw away the key. That’s the problem with queer baiting.
CurtisIsTheOne
Not one of you who criticized me for allegedly “shaming” Harry Styles and Queerty for pandering to the media with his “Is He or Isn’t He” gay BS took the time to read my post. I wasn’t shaming him; I’m just really tired of having to read about it in carefully crafted ploys for media attention. He could put the rumors to bed by simply saying “I’m straight, I’m Bi, I’m gay” or whatever. End of story. And not one of you addressed Queerty’s insipid pandering to the fascination with “Is HE or Isn’t HE” BS that poses as journalism. Not ONE OF YOU.
Doctor Benway
Harry, I like you but this movie sounds so boring and outdated.
Donston
The synopsis is worrying. Folks are getting tired of almost all high-profile “queer movies” being about people in hetero relationships or being set at least 30 years in the past. But it seems Hollyweird and many of its storytellers aren’t interested in diversity or modernization. So, we keep seeing variations of the same shit.
Dev
And cue the cries of, “why didn’t they cast a gay actor…”
Kevan1
Say at three way develops. Harry seems fine for that or a gay role.
azjeff17
I’d rather see straight actors portraying gay characters and vice-versa.
Matthewnow
LOL
wjtsht
10 points if you can name a single studio film where a gay lead character is played by an openly gay actor. 1000 points if you can name two. 1 million if you can name three.
What the hell, throw in TV too.
leecee
Isn’t Titus Burgess an openly gay character in the Netflix series, “The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt? If not he sure acts very gay in this comedy and he is openly gay in real life. I will take my 10 points now, thank you very much.
Alex_S
Sounds like another imitation of “Brokeback Mountain”.
Res1
Sounds like Maurice.
I bet he won’t any backlash as Halle Berry did for attempting to play a trans person because he’s a sexy pop star. If he were ugly, people would be calling for a boycott. Do you see the paradox?
amanwithanedge
anybody else sick of these gay baiters??
Cam
:::raising hand::::
RandomGuy
Tired.
nm4047
Hopefully he this production is better than the ‘happy together’ rubbish for which he has an exec producer credit.
mecmass
Wow. Reading through the comments here. Nothing like perpetuating the stereotype of gay men as negative, bitchy queens.
leecee
Oh my word!
LegionKeign
Ain’t that the truth.
CurtisIsTheOne
Well “I’m not a BITCHY QUEEN, darling”. Rolls eyes, snaps fingers and opens with a Power Snappy Noise FAN”. Yeah, I can’t stand those bitchy queens either. “Thinking Not I’d Become My Enemy, in the Instant That I’d Preach” My Back Pages – Bob Dylan
Cam
So in other words, a straight man can belittle LGBTQ people’s journeys and use them for profit, yet pointing them out gets US attacked.
Yeah, WE’RE the bitchy ones. (eyes roll)
Doctor Benway
@CurtisIsTheOne That’s not very coherent. lGBTQ people asked not to be labeled and you want Harry to do it. He doesn’t spend his time spreading gay or bi rumours about himself, the medias do, they are the one always talking about it. The only things he did was being an LGBT ally, saying gender is not that important and writing one song about fooling around with guys… His career is far more than that.
But it’s ok, we got it, Harry is an awful cis white men and as a cis white men he is a privileged while you, poor tortured gay guy have a miserable life (you make me think about another one like you who can’t stop saying Liam Payne is an awful person for many reasons)
stuffedpuppy
@Res 1 Yes, admit that a lot of LGBTQ youth have a difficult time in today’s world yet I cannot understand why they cannot have access to mental health professionals. Surely, they can’t all be so daft??
I’m just afraid that you are only capable of happiness though the misery of another. That’s sad.
Mark
In the 1960s I realized I was gay. I think I have some experience in the difficulties young, gay men face. It seems to me that Stiles is promoting a “Why do you care about anyone’s sexuality” attitude. If everyone felt that way, we would all face fewer issues.
