HBO’s Game of Thrones is applauded for its game-changing dedication to killing off beloved lead characters in gory ways, leaving them chopped up in fleshy chunks, gouts of blood and viscera spouting freely from open neck wounds.
But producers should be equally praised for happily displaying their handsome male heroes in all their glory, shortly before their heads are impaled on pikes or their ganglia is unspooled from their skulls to splatter into gold goblets and everyone’s upset.

He’s definitely hot, but I couldn’t help but think of the cruelty inflicted on the character during that scene. While he can get some enjoyment from the encounter, he has no physical capacity to climax. I just keep telling myself it’s make believe and that the actor doesn’t have this issue.

So I have to say I’m confused, I always thought eunuch was just a lack of balls (therefore testosterone), much like you do with dogs/ cats – or does the shaft (always) get cut off as well. Or is it just the Unsullied that have everything removed?

It depends on the culture. While a lack of balls does make one a eunuch, some cultures removed everything. The eunuchs of imperial China, for example.
And yes, the unsullied have everything removed, which is then offered to their god, Lady of Spears. The books goes into detail about the reasons for the removal of the penis. Namely, a regular eunuch can still have sex, but not if he’s missing his penis.

One of the main historic reasons for the barbarism of forced “eunuchood”, other than preserving boyish pure singing voices, was to create the perfect guard for royal harems. Eunuchs with just their testicles removed, could still “cheat” the royalty by providing sexual services for the harem members (and themselves), when the royalty is away or busy with other harem members.
