Pride season is well underway. 2014 marks the 45th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots of 1969. To commemorate this historic year for Pride, we’ve compiled photos from past Pride celebrations, from the 1970s through today. The pictures illustrate how the movement has transformed over the decades, going from the grassroots “Christopher Street Liberation Day” to the widely-celebrated, corporate-sponsored spectacle Gay Pride has become today.

Thanks so much for sharing this. Having been around since the beginning, I can say it was really a fine retrospective.

I am glad all that facial hair is out of style

@Ogre Magi: Facial hair is definitely not out of style in all groups – and I’m thankful for that. Life is not one style fits all.

Hoorah for the LGBT community! We have come a long way baby! I came out in the Navy in 1960 and met my lifetime partner in 1962. We got married in Massachusetts ten years ago this month.

I am thankful for all of those who marched before me. It is because of them that I get to live the life I do.

They had more class back then

@scotshot: I always believed that the only reason straight men shave was because women liked their men to look like 12 year old boys. “Some fathers teach their sons to shave, other teach them to be men…”

Very refreshing to see our history posted here. So many times the comments related to articles about people over 22 years old are “yawn”, “who cares?”, and some age-related crack.

Further info about attending the first Pride Parade in Hollywood..it was very boring to say the least…no Drags….Dikes on Bikes…no bands or music in fact..after the parade we all went to some park and listened to speakers…One of which was Rev. Perry…he was the founder of the first Gay Church… And oh how times have changed…Back then we had no desire to get “married”. That is what the straights did..I am glad things have changed!
