In case you’ve been vacationing on Mars, you’ve probably heard that the new Barbie movie hits theaters this month.
The movie’s producers previously announced most of the artists on the soundtrack. They left people wondering who the one remaining track would come from. This led many Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande and Lana Del Rey fans to get their hopes up.
On Monday, Sam Smith revealed that they are the final singer to feature on the movie’s collection of songs.
Smith says they were commissioned to specifically write a song from Ken’s point of view. Hence their new banger, “Man I Am” (which is worth pointing out as some people on social media have questioned why a non-binary artist would sing a song with that title).
“I cannot begin to express how incredibly excited I am to be a part of the soundtrack to this already iconic film,” Smith said on Instagram on Monday. They said there were “invited by the incredible @iammarkronson [Mark Ronson] and Greta Gerwig to write a song from the perspective of Ken for one of the scenes and we honestly had so much fun with this. I cannot wait for you to hear what we’ve created together.”
Yesterday, Smith dropped a teaser of the track. In a video, they danced and mimed along wearing a pink, Barbie hoodie.
The official Barbie movie account shared the clip, prompting some nasty comments from people disappointed at Sam’s inclusion. Some wanted other acts. Some just dislike Smith.
Other fans came to Smith’s defense.
“The treatment of Sam in these comment sections is so incredibly unnecessary and disappointing. They have hurt no one, they are just singing. Please just leave Sam alone.”
The ‘Barbie’ soundtrack
Barbie hits theaters on July 21. It features several songs written especially for the movie.
“You’re hearing lyrics that are responding to what’s happening onscreen, so the music became more than just music — it became a device to enhance what the audience was watching and experiencing, and got to be the voice of the audience,” lead actress Margot Robbie told Rolling Stone in June.
The movie’s lead single, “Dance The Night”, by Dua Lipa, dropped in May.
This week, Ryan Gosling’s power ballad as Ken, “Just Ken”, was also posted to YouTube.

That song clip sounds great. You go Sam!

I just get the same sense that I did from Demi Lovato, honestly. Someone who made the most vanilla, mundane, straightforward pop who had a quarter-life crisis and is now trying to capitalize on the moment by trying to be daring and edgy. I just don’t buy it. I don’t buy it from a lot of the popstars today.
abfab
Then don’t buy it. Simple.
ShaverC
Like many others have already said: By his own admission he’s not a man, so why sing this song?
GameBoy
Because it’s written in the perspective of Ken, one of the characters of the movie

That’s entertainment! The GOP critics need to get out more and realize there are many ways to be. The amount of hang ups these ”Gay” men have is staggering. Negatives trolls……..get lost.

I am convinced that Sam Smith has a secret financial investment in Queerty, the amount the site posts about them.
Why else would the site stroke their ego as much as it does?
I miss “In the Lonely Hour” Sam. That Sam was raw with their vocals and songwriting. That Sam was not an egoist or attention-seeker. And given how transparent they were about their (then) sexuality, I don’t feel that they presented themselves “falsely” due to being “in the closet” about their gender identity. So why change so much post-gender identity reveal? Living as one’s authentic gender identity does not equate to living as someone who has an ego and screams for attention.
Being back humble (but still happy and out) Sam!
GameBoy
YAWN, there’s just so much wrong in your post, I don’t know where to begin but you claim everything is wrong because Sam not presenting themselves in a conservative way anymore which is absolute no, and they clearly not very happy during that state, take that “Old Sam Smith” BS somewhere else
abfab
Louis and his ilk are like broken records. Controlling and republican, which are one and the same. Live and let live, bitch.
Louis
@gameboy Where did I say I want Sam to be conservative? I think you’ll find I said I would prefer that they be happy and out as their true authentic non-binary self, simply without having an ego or being an attention seeker. For example, Demi Lovato identifies as non-binary but I personally don’t feel she presents as being an attention-seeker. So it’s entirely possible to live as your true gender identity without seeming conceited, and that’s all I’ve expressed I wish Sam would do.
@abfab Republicanism in the sense of the political party does not exist here in the UK; only in the sense of wanting to remove the monarchy and become a republic, therefore I can comfortably say I’m not a Republican. And I’m not sure you can equate someone feeling that an individual is an attention-seeker (and preferring that the individual not be) with that someone being controlling. Indeed, if you re-read your own post, you telling me to “live in a let live” is directing ME to be/act a certain way, which in itself is an example of controlling behaviour. So are you pro controlling or against it? You can’t have your cake and eat it 😉
Louis
Edit: they* when talking about Demi.

@Louis.
Don’t get too bent out of shape about all of this. Live and let die. Happy now?
Get out a bit more and just live Why all the pushback on people who are not harming you? Oh right, you’re also a stubborn old bloke from merry olde England. We have our fair share here as well. Awful bunch.

For the sake of the all and not the high maintenence one, could we cut with the they them their confusion. Our pronouns are ours, we have a right to preserve the english language as is without a thimble full of people twisting things to their favor with no rational basis. They can get their own words without pissing off the entire nation with their bs rhetoric. At least Demi Lavato got a clue.
Louis
I disagree.
Saying they/them/their is very normal in conversation.
Think about when you speak to someone about someone else (who is unknown to the person you’re speaking to)
You: Oh you’re going on holiday to the Maldives? Wow. My friend just came back from there
Person: Oh really? What did they think?
“They” is used here so naturally because the gender of the individual is unknown. Therefore is an individual does not identify as a specific gender, using “they” as a pronoun is as natural as the conversation above.
Of course it can be more difficult when they have identified as a gender for a number of yours and referring to them as a gendered pronoun is habit, but that’s just where conscious effort comes in to refer to their correct pronoun. Much like if you knew a Trans person pre-transition, habit might be to refer to them as their DeadName, but you would make the conscious effort to refer to them as their true name.
So, I definitely don’t think we should be asking our NB siblings to forego their gender-neutral pronouns and force gendered ones upon them. That’s simply wrong and not at all inclusive.

When the sex is known, using a plural to describe a single person is like nails on a chalk board. Why divide? Why not unite with words that don’t clash?
Demi Lavato dropped using they them bc educating became too exhausting. A signal for too much backlash.
Even Sam Smith whom I find fascinating will never here me call him they as it’s the masses pronoun, not anyone’s to change at their whim and expect us to follow. That’s the ultimate disrespect to people in general.
It seems to me its the NBs that are being non inclusive by choosing words that cause conflict and division instead of words that we can all agree on and thereby be inclusive.
abfab
We get it dip..How many times must you repeat yourself? You’re a tired, old, stubborn asshole and with every post you make nails on a chalkboard much more tolerable.
