Actor Ansel Elgort found a name for himself in 2014’s The Fault In Our Stars, and now the 20-year-old is making sure we know which team that name plays for.
He recently took to twitter to clarify things:
Just in case it isn’t clear… I like girls. A lot.
— Ansel Elgort (@AnselElgort) December 18, 2014
Well that settles that, though we can’t say we were kept up at night wondering. Elgort has signed on to play gay pianist Van Cliburn in a new biopic, so perhaps he’s a little sensitive right now.
To his credit, he followed up the Tweet with another:
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
Also let me say if I was gay I wouldn’t hide it. Being gay or straight isn’t bad or good it just IS. U are who you are. Be true to yourself. — Ansel Elgort (@AnselElgort) December 18, 2014
And here’s a brief appreciation of the definitely straight young star:

I like that he doesn’t look like a pinup boy, but that being the case it is awkward when he gets photographed in pinup-boy poses.

Bi then. oops I meant: bye then

I always find it funny when straight boys feel the need to deny they’re gay by asserting that they like girls.
I like him though, he seems like a nice kid.
KingKong
It really f-cking bugs me when straight actors say that if they were gay they would have no problem being out. Fact is that 99% of the time being gay IS bad for your career especially when, as in his case, it’s dependant on you being attractive to the opposite sex. And when these people who have no idea what it’s like to actually be gay make these statements so nonchalantly, it shows a serious disrespect to gay actors (and all gay people actually) who struggle with coming out due to the very real consequences that come with it.
jason smeds
Just because you like girls it doesn’t mean you can’t like guys too. I get so annoyed with these actors who play funny little word games to run around issues that might adversely affect the marketing of their image to women. It’s pathetic.
In any case, I don’t find him particularly attractive. He resembles a thin Nordic type with good hair. That’s all.
Saint Law
@jason smeds: “In any case, I don’t find him particularly attractive.”
As well.

@mjwatts:
Or when they qualify how much they like them…a lot!
As if he was straight but only kind of liked girls…but more into video games…
mydude
I don’t know why people are taking offense to what he said; he likes girls and if you think these people don’t know what we’re saying about them online, think again.
booplay
It’s amazing that this young actor actually said something somewhat supportive about the gay community, and all these whiney little queens are still attacking him. Even if he didn’t phrase it the way you would have liked, you know he meant no offense. Stop being so sensitive and stop looking for things to be offended by. One comment actually used the word pathetic. I swear, he could have said, “I love gay people.”, and someone would have been offended on here.
dhmonarch89
King Kong nailed it! Plus- EVERY time a str8 guy plays gay- they have to do this- it’s just gotten beyond annoying!!!
Saint Law
@booplay: Yeah, it’s wrong to be offended by his comments but not wrong to be offended by those who are offended by them.
You whiney little queen.
enlightenone
@booplay: When you are ready for manplay, maybe a comment by you will carry some weight!

@mydude: When a man says he “likes girls a lot,” he sounds like a child molester. Offensive!

Want a sure fire way to avoid being offended by an actor denying that he’s gay? Stop fucking accusing people of being gay. I don’t know why some feel entitled to a perfectly worded response when they spread rumors that can put a person’s career, relationship, friendships, and family ties in question. You’re spreading a rumor that you damn well know can harm everything that person has worked for. You’re lucky most actors don’t respond with a “go fuck yourselves”.

@MCHG: “Stop fucking accusing people of being gay.” ….
“Well that settles that, though we can’t say we were kept up at night wondering. Elgort has signed on to play gay pianist Van Cliburn in a new biopic, so perhaps he’s a little sensitive right now.”
Who is accusing??????
I won’t wait up for your not so “perfectly worded response given your lack of literacy!!!!”
jason smeds
I’ve seen so many dweebs go around saying things like “I like girls…a lot” as if they need to stress how much they like them. It’s like a dweeby defense mechanism designed to shut out the idea that they might be interested in guys. So many actors have this strategy in place.
Sluggo2007
It doesn’t matter much to me what he is. If I were to pass him on the street, I wouldn’t even notice him.
Ladbrook
I’m more offended by Ansel’s misuse of the subjunctive mood than by his desperate attempt to clarify his ambiguous sexual identity.
Aromaeus
He’s cute and I always like a white guy with visible lips.
Stache99
Wow. Born in 1994. I’m feeling old about now. I think it’s effect will be fully realized when you meet people born after 2000. Yikes.
Anyways. This is another reason we need more gay actors playing gay roles. Clearly this role and it’s effects bothered him. Reminds me of the actor Hal Sparks after he finished playing on QAF would ad nauseam talk about his love of women. Still didn’t do a thing for his career though.

“…Clearly this role and it’s effects bothered him…”
Thoughtful and wise for someone born in 1994!

@Stache99: The year is 2018. That’s when every single one of us will effectively be old, as people born in the year 2000 will be *full blown adults*. Or at least classified as such.
Let that marinate for a second 🙂
By the year 2020, bringing up the 20th century will be like you brought up the stone age.
That’ll certainly be a different world for sure.
Cagnazzo82
As for this story regarding sexuality, I do find it both curious and amusing…
…In all of Hollywood there is not one, single, solitary bisexual male. Not one.
Is that really statistically accurate? There are no bisexual male actors, like at all?…
Hm, oh how I wonder 😉

The BOQB is out in force on this thread…………….
Here is a kid who has a gazillion teenage fans and he says something so very positive about Gays and being Gay implying there is nothing wrong with it and it is who you are, and yet the BOQ’s still find reason to bash him…………..
So Sad…………
jjose712
@MCHG: First, nobody accused nobody of being gay, being gay is not a crime, and having rumours about you if you are a Hollywood actor is totally normal (if this is the worst rumour he face he is very fortunate). Second, as Daniel Radcliffe said if there’s gay rumours about you, you are doing something right, generally people don’t waste time spreading rumours about actor who are not popular.
And of course he didn’t anwered with a go and fuck yourself because he is not an idiot. That kind of answer will probably fuel the rumours (and that’s one of the reasons you need to be careful when you denied rumours, because sometimes the effect is the opposite you wanted) and make you look bad all at the same time.
Rumours about him are not new (of course they are not old either because he is pretty new on the business) and i don’t know if denied the rumours now that he is going to play a gay character is a good idea.
He is very young, and you need to be careful when you deny gay rumours, the whole i like girls sounds insecure (anyway most actors are insecure) and the second statement is as positive as false. He come accross as gay friendly, but i’m pretty sure him like any other it boy of the moment wouldn’t come out if he was gay, not at the beginning of his career. If he were gay he probably have two options, the glass closet or doing fake relationships like there’s no tomorrow (i doubt a publicist let a young actor of the moment come out).
Given the fact we have plenty of examples of people who denied year after year being gay to finally come out, i don’t think making an effort in denying the rumours is nothing more than a waste of time. People generally don’t believe the actors, and if he is not married and with children (and that case the gay rumours imply you are a lier) the best strategy is simply don’t be offended (or at least fake not being offended) and avoid fake relationships. A lot of straight actors do fake relationships in Hollywood for publicity, if you have gay rumours surrounding you being in a relationships with a beard (even if you are not gay) are only going to make increase the rumours
jjose712
@PLAYS WELL WITH OTHERS: Sorry but i don’t see anyone bashing him.
It’s obvious he tries to denied the rumour and being gay positive at the same time. Unfortunately i think he failed, starting for the fact that i doubt he will be out of the closet if he were gay. It’s very easy to say that when you are not going to come out and put in risk your career.
Anyway, he is going to learn to deal with the rumours, because the rumours were previous to the gay role, and when the film will be released he is probably going to be questioned about how it’s to play a gay character, and better be prepared.
To play a gay role (unless you are clearly known as straight) has some uncomfortable questions for the actor (specially if he is a closet case). If the actor is straight is quite easy to be insensitive and put his foot in his mouth on interviews.
Of course there are actors who are able to be classy, Noel Fisher is a good example.

@jjose712: Are we reading posts from the same thread????? You don’t see anyone bashing him????????
And his tweet: “Also let me say if I was gay I wouldn’t hide it. Being gay or straight isn’t bad or good it just IS. U are who you are. Be true to yourself”
Is a powerful statement to make for a kid that has a gazillion tween/teen followers…….
tford216
you guys bashing him for saying he likes girls are so self absorbed. He wants girls…he wants them to know he likes them. If girls think he is gay that cuts down on his opportunity to get more girls. Being gay is cool but he wants girls to know that he wants them.
