My bet is that Cohen makes Bruno the true sympathetic character in the film, and makes the homophobes look like the idiots they are…and yes, many of them will be too stooopid to understand what morons they are, as usual… so do we need to dumb down all satire, or social-commentary inspired comedy, so that the densest amongst us can easily understand? Is Larry the Cable Guy’s “git’er done” the level of discourse we should follow in this country? (Which in itself, is a parody of blue collar/red state values, performed by an intelligent and RICH man.)
And you know, some gay men are effeminate, and some lesbians are butch dykes, and whatever other stereotype you want to judge…and every single GLBT person deserves a voice, and to be proud of who they are…no one should have to censor themselves to “make a homophobe feel more comfortable”, or so as “not to threaten” the stoopidest/most regressive members of the population.

Attitude magazine is the worst “gay” magazine in the world. About 90% of the covers are of heterosexuals. It’s really a heterosexual-worship magazine.

It’s intriguing how the advertising differs across the Atlantic. It seems you nice colonials get a lot of gay jokes, but here in Blighty, all the adverts I’ve seen seem to showcase the Bruno is out of touch and offensive to everyone, with one of the current ads feauturing him telling a “suspected terrorist” that “your King Osama looks like some kind of dirty wizard or homeless Santa.” Maybe it’s to do with cultural differences regarding “innapropriate behaviour”; out here, being percieved as racist or xenophobic is, socially speaking, one of the worst things you can possibly do, whereas in America, I gather, the race issue is seen as less provocative than the gay issue.

I’m less concerned about the impact on the gays than SBC’s shameless promotion and the media’s complicity. I hope the movie tanks for this reason alone. But I tend to agree with Alan, and that it’s the homophobes, the racists and the stupid people who will come out worse for wear. The real homophobes are no more likely to see this film than LA Tool and Die (my favorite).
