Manorexia Before and After

1.jpg
Jeremy, the young man featured in City Pages’ look at male anorexics, sent us a picture of what he looked back in his modeling days. As you can see, not eating has taken its toll.

We’re cheering you and others on, Jeremy!

Jeremy – all the friends who know you testify to your compassionate kindness. It is this strength that you must muster now to become well. I know how important love is in that equation. I am in remission from cancer on the heals of a quadruple cardiac bypass graft.

I also believe you when you say that this time you want to engage in another type “modelling”, ie, a mentor to young men or women who want to define themselves into some unhealthy body type.

I will continue to support you in word and in prayer.

Thanks Dr. Res-

Even though I was healthier and obviously better looking, I wasn’t happy. I was working out at the gym too much, very shallow and only concerned with my appearance. I wanted and still want people to love me for me…not my looks. I cannot lie, I would love to look like that picture again, but I also want to be happy.

Here’s wishing you the best, Jeremy.

also, what kind of programs or “help” options does one have where you are at? how involved is the recovery for you at this point?

Yes, Jeremy. That’s how I first met you.

Take care of yourself, okay?

This is a heartbreaking story but the fact that Jeremy is reaching out is a great sign. It also helps the rest of us put things in a clearer perspective.

I am so impressed with his bravery.

Jeremy,

I was a bulimic in my teen and years and then again in my early 30′s. I no longer binge and purge but there are times when I want to, when the stress in my life feels overwhelming the “comfort” that arrives after a purge beckons. I resist. I let myself have the urge but I listen to reason and do not allow myself to harm myself that way. It isn’t easy and I feel that I will always have this issue. I am a healthy 165 pounds these days. I’m six feet, one inches tall. I’m slender and muscled and have a healthy relationship with food.

I want you to know that you have a friend here. I want you to live. I want you to know that there is a healthy man inside of you deserving of the opportunity to exist. You are a beautiful man, with every reason in the world to feed your body, to allow it carry your heart and soul forward.

Please don’t give up on yourself. Don’t starve yourself. It is never too late to give yourself a happy life.

You are a worthwhile, lovely man. I would be proud to be your friend.

Stuart-

Thanks for your kind words of support and congratulations on managing the monster that is bulimia. I wish I could believe your statements about me.

Jeremy,

Anytime you’d like to talk Jeremy I would be very happy to speak with you. Your punishing disbelief in your own worth is matched by your desire to be embraced, understood, saved. Let yourself be saved.
