Self-proclaimed "ex-gay" has Bible, will thump

donniemcclurkin2.jpgWhether or not you believe controversial gospel star Donnie McClurkin is sincere in his assertion that he was "delivered" from a his homosexuality by the power of God's graces, his performance last night in Columbia, South Carolina had "drama queen" written all over it.

McClurkin has been a hot potato for Prez hopeful Barack Obama in recent weeks, splitting his Democratic supporters along lines that usually differentiate the Democratic Party from the GOP. And according to The New York Times, McClurkin's contribution to Sunday's gospel rally and concert in support of Obama didn't do much to mend fences. At the close of the three-hour show, McClurkin took center stage to give the crowd a finale that included some of his greatest pulpit hits to date, including:

Don’t call me a bigot or anti-gay when I have suffered the same feelings!"

God delivered me from homosexuality!"

The greatest change a person can have is not in politics!"

and the sure-to-be-hit…

Believe the Bible over the blogs!"

Oh how the mighty fall! Chris Austin made a name for himself and his Renew Ministries as an ex-gay activist. Unfortunately, it seems Austin himself couldn't stay "ex-gay". The Texas-based preacher's just been sentenced to ten years in prison for sexually assaulting a client. Truth Wins Out reports:

Truth Wins Out expressed relief today that Christopher Austin, an ‘ex-gay’ counselor in Irving, Texas, was convicted of sexually assaulting a client. Austin was sentenced to 10 years in prison, but received seven years probation, had to register as a sex offender and was ordered to pay a $2,500 fine.

The abuse apparently involved a bit of unwanted penetration.

Perhaps Austin thought he could fuck the gay away?

Ex-gays will no longer hide in the closet. Religious treatment of homosexuality's grown to unprecedented levels.

According to Boston's Edge, there are over 150 Exodus ministries in 70 counties. The ex-gay movement proves to a formidable enemy in the protracted war for gay survival.

In the aftermath of "former" gay editor Michael Glatze's so-called conversion, Edge has launched a four part series examining the ins and outs - or, not outs - of the ex-gay movement. One of the key aspects of the movement stems from the tension between religious ideology and personal salvation.

Peter LaBarbera and his Americans for "Truth" may have found a new messiah: former Young Gay America editor, Michael Glatze.

Glatze, of course, recently rejected his gay ways and found religion. And trust that Cheney-baby-hating LaBarbera's ready to drop down and worship…

Ex-Gay Survivors gathered in California this weekend to confer on how they escaped Exodus and others' dastardly clutches. Above you'll see one man, Sean, explaining his ten-years trying to pray the gay away. It didn't work.

Box Turtle Bulletin shot six interviews in total - watch them all (oh, come on, what else are you going to do with your day?).

The Gayest Hour In CNN History!

Paris Hilton wasn't the only big draw last night on CNN.

Paula Zahn and her lisp spent an hour exploring the ins and outs of homosexuality on last night's Paula Zahn Now. Like any good journo, Zahn took some time to explore that old nature v. nurture debate, changing opinion on the gays and scientific and moralistic missions to "cure" those who are bit bent.

It's a meeting of the mindless this weekend as ex-gay movement Exodus head to California's Concordia University for its annual Exodus Freedom Conference.

As an act of protest, Exodus founder and reformed ex-gay Michael Bussee released a number of videos explaining his evolution from gay to ex-gay and back again.

Chambers, Others Coming To Senses (Sort Of...)

More and more so-called ex-gays are coming out against the movement, including one of the most prominent anti-gay activists, Alan Chambers.

Chambers reached national infamy as the spokesperson for Exodus International, an ex-gay group dedicated to "freedom from homosexuality through the power of Jesus Christ".

Despite years of religious reparative therapy to "cure" his queerness, Chambers finally woke up to the dangers - and impossibility - of his movement.

We homos have been hating on homo-hating surgeon general nominee Dr. James Holsinger. Now his pals over at Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays & Gays are hating on us. Not-so-shocking considering Holsinger's endorsed reparative therapy to "cure" homos. In addition to endorsing Holsinger, PFOX blasts gay media for blasting Holsinger.

Read the gory details, after the jump…

Mainstream media's finally picking up on what we already knew: Surgeon General nominee Dr. James Holsinger's a homo-hater. As we've reported, Holsinger advocates so-called ex-gay therapy.

Not only does Holsinger work for the United Methodist Church, he founded the Hope Springs Church, which holds the traditional family in high regard. Above you'll see CNN's coverage of Holsinger's queer nomination, including a few words from The Gay and Lesbian Task Force's leader, Matt Foreman. You'll also hear the White House's statement on the matter:

On numerous occasions, [Holsinger] has taken up the banner for underprivileged populations and he will continue to be a strong advocate for these groups and all Americans.

The White House, of course, has never quite understood the meaning of "underprivileged" or, really, "American".

Highlight Homo-Hating Past, "Medical" Mischief

Truth Wins Out dedicates its non-profit practices to combating ex-gay groups - the religious-minded organizations attempting to "cure" homosexuals. No doubt, then, that TWO has a few words to say about Dr. James Holsinger, President Bush's anti-gay nominee for United States Surgeon General.

Holsinger's got quite a homo-hating past, not least of all his founding Hope Springs Community Church, which believes it is man's "intent to reproduce the following core values in every area of our church life and remain firmly committed to living out our purpose in everything we do".

As part of their campaign against homo-hating Holsinger, Truth Wins Out has released the above video statement, in which executive director Wayne Besen blasts the "good" doctor's medical approach:

Holsinger is an ideologue whose medical views on gay and lesbian people resemble sorcery more than sound science. The last thing America needed was another deplorable nominee who isn’t up to the job, but this is exactly what Bush delivered.

Besen goes on to say "It is clear that James Holsinger is to medicine what Alberto Gonzales is to justice." That, of course, ain't good…

Like a lot of people, we rolled our eyes in disgust when financial guru and freshly outed lady lover Suze Orman justified her quest for gay marriage by lamenting the potential loss of her millions. She griped to The New York Times' Deborah Solomon:

[My lover KT and I] have millions of dollars in our name. It’s killing me that upon my death, K.T. is going to lose 50 percent of everything I have to estate taxes. Or vice versa.

Alright, that's kind of a gross justification, but not as sickening as ex-gay and Exodus International leader Randy Thomas' uncivil statements.

A friend from CBC's The Hour send us this video of their piece on Reparative therapy - the controversial, Biblically proportioned "conversion" ex-gays think "cures" homosexuality. Among the tactics, suggesting men stop wearing earrings and pick up a football. Genius!

We know you guys love that shit, so we figured you'd be intrigued. Warning, it's not for the faint of heart. Luckily, we know most of you kids don't have hearts, so you should be okay.

While Jimmy Im's living it up at WinterPride, we've been hard at working planning our next issue. While we can't give away any of the details, we can say that our research led us over to the Love In Action website.

In case you're not aware, Love in Action's one of the many ex-gay movements who claim homosexuality can be cured through "the power of Jesus". Founded in 1973 by John Evans and the Reverend Kent Philpott, they define their purpose thus:

Love in Action International is passionately committed to helping people discover the truth about God and about who they really are in his son Jesus. In the safety and strength of God's love men and women of all ages have found the courage to step out of destructive and enslaving life behaviors.

Of course, destructive and enslaving behaviors can be read as many things, but the group focuses primarily on the most damning of all behaviors: same-sex lovin'.

Upon entering their site, the reader's asked to choose one of three links: men, women and clergy. It's with the first two that we're concerned. What's this concern? Well, dive into the glorious jump to find out…

Just over two weeks ago we reported on a man named Noe Gutierrez: a man who joined the ex-gay movement and then renounced his ex-gay status. Despite the turn-over, Gutierrez refused to discuss his sexuality, discussing publicly that it's not up for public discussion.

While Gutierrez may want to slink into the shadows of his own shadowy sexuality, there's another ex-ex-gay who'd like to take his show on the road: Peterson Toscano.

After years in the ex-gay movement - and taking a wife - Toscano found himself playing missionary in Zambia, where his desire for dick - er - exploded. It took more years and more tears until he finally accepted his sexuality.

Now, back in America and a happy homo, Toscano's penned a play on his experience, Doin' Time in the Homo No Mo Halfway House. Promoting a Portland-based production at the gay-friendly Metropolitan Community Church, Toscano sat down with journo Scott Moore for a little chat. Here's what he has to say about his time at ex-gay camp, Love in Action:

I stayed there and worked during the day, and at night and on weekends had intensive therapy, a lot of it based around the 12-Step Program, seeing homosexuality as an addiction. And there was some gender readjustment… We had a football clinic. Changing your oil and stuff like that.

The final involved two Russian hookers, a sling and a bucket of liube. He failed.

Toscano also traces his path to the ex-gay movement. Let's just say it's some scary shit. Read all about it here.

Also, head on over to Peterson's website. He'll love you forever.
