Last month Target opened a new store in East Harlem, the first of the big box retailer’s stores in Manhattan. Next year, Target plans to open two stores in San Francisco. I have heard both of these cities have very large, very vocal homosexual populations. With the company’s donation to MN Forward, putting down roots in these locations makes about as much sense as an AutoZone setting up shop in Fire Island.
Meanwhile, on hand at last month’s Harlem store opening were folks like Jerry Seinfeld, Rev. Run, and Doug E. Fresh. Also, Bethenny Frankel and Kelly Rowland, who’ve somehow managed to become something short of icons to the gays. Sometimes these celebrities are paid fees to appear at openings like Target’s, and sometimes they do it for the publicity or to walk away with a decent amount of swag. Either way, both Frankel (whose entire televised wedding was planned by a gay) and Rowland (the former Destiny’s Child who’s now tearing it up with gay club anthems) were very recently lending their support to a corporation we now know to place business interests in front of human ones. Will these two dare to slam the company?
