Many Republicans continue to stand by Donald Trump (largely with gritted teeth), and religious right leaders in particular are full-throated in their support of his election. But not everyone is lining up like a good soldier. From a few surprising quarters, you can hear the dissent.
And, boy, it’s pretty pointed.
The dissenters aren’t just complaining about Trump and his pervy behavior. They are pointedly taking on his supporters, and in particular the family values Christians who are willing to overlook Trump’s behavior as long as he appoints another Scalia to the Supreme Court. With the exception of Steve Schmidt, who has been supportive of gay causes, none of the dissenters are remotely allies. But they are people of principle.
Here are five examples of unexpected opponents who are willing to call out Trump’s Christian supporters for the bald-faced hypocrites they are.
Steve Schmidt, campaign manager for John McCain’s 2008 presidential bid.
“It exposes at such a massive scale and at such magnitude the hypocrisy of the Tony Perkinses and the Jerry Falwell Jrs. and the Pat Robertsons. These people are literally the modern-day Pharisees, they are the money changers in the temple, and they will forever be destroyed from a credibility perspective. There are millions of decent, faithful, committed evangelicals in this country who have every right to participate in the political process. But this country doesn’t ever need to hear a lecture from any one of these people [Perkins, Falwell, etc.] again on a values issue, or their denigration of good and decent gay people in this country.”
Russell Moore, president of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission at the Southern Baptist Convention
“These evangelical leaders have said that, for the sake of the ‘lesser of two evils,’ one should stand with someone who not only characterizes sexual decadence and misogyny, brokers in cruelty and nativism, and displays a crazed public and private temperament — but who glories in these things. Some of the very people who warned us about moral relativism and situational ethics now ask us to become moral relativists for the sake of an election.”
Beth Moore, founder, Living Proof Ministries
“I’m one among many women sexually abused, misused, stared down, heckled, talked naughty to. Like we liked it. We didn’t. We’re tired of it. Try to absorb how acceptable the disesteem and objectifying of women has been when some Christian leaders don’t think it’s that big a deal.”
Julie Roys, radio talk show host
“I never thought I’d see the day when leading evangelicals would publicly espouse that character doesn’t matter — and that promoting sexual assault is simply ‘bad boy talk.’…I honestly don’t know what makes me more sick. Listening to Trump brag about groping women or listening to my fellow evangelicals defend him.”
Andy Crouch, executive editor, Christianity Today
“Enthusiasm for a candidate like Trump gives our neighbors ample reason to doubt that we believe Jesus is Lord. They see that some of us are so self-interested, and so self-protective, that we will ally ourselves with someone who violates all that is sacred to us—in hope, almost certainly a vain hope given his mendacity and record of betrayal, that his rule will save us.”

Kangol
Profiles in conservative courage, all of them. Meanwhile Trump’s white supremacist, anti-Semitic deplorables have been bombarding conservative critics on National Review with r@cist pornography and issuing death threats, threatening their kids, breaking into phone conversations, etc. Absolutely beyond the pale!
Kangol
This is what the Alt-Right Breitbart Trumpistas are doing to a conservative US military veteran: http://www.nationalreview.com/article/441319/donald-trump-alt-right-internet-abuse-never-trump-movement
Kieran
The Establishment had it all planned. It was supposed to be Hillary vs. jeb! this year. Then it wouldn’t matter who won. But then that upstart, anti-war, populist Trump had to come along and ruin everything.
Juanjo
@Kieran: Oh honey, climb down off the cross, we need the wood. Trump is no more amusing than you are relevant.
wmca_goodguys
And the report on the pro-gay Democrats who are dumping Clinton for her acceptance of millions of dollars from entities that have constituents who’d want to slit the throats of gays, push us off buildings, and burn us alive in cages? And Clinton invites such supporters to come live in our country unvetted?
joeyty
Why wouldn’t any of those guys hate Trump? Trump is non-religious and has gone to gay weddings.
Sansacro
@Juanjo: LOL!!
joeyty
@Kieran: LOL. (But I guarantee you neither Jeb nor Hillary have ever gone to gay weddings).
jmi2
Bogus headline! Steve Schmidt is not ant gay. He has spoken support for marriage equality & said the GOP anti gay stance will be one of the causes of its death. The other 4 didn’t dump Trump as much as dump Evangelicals who support him throwing their Jesus out the window because they don’t ‘live’ his truth as they see it.
joeyty
@jmi2: (the horrid self-hating john gallagher is constantly making up stuff. That’s why he hides his face).
o.codone
This is a completely made up article, designed to make Trump supporters have self-doubt. “If these guys can dump Trump, maybe I should too”. Oh sure. This high school level made-up fantasy is really going to turn supporters against Trump. Grow up Queerty. It’s embarrassing.
James
@o.codone: Sorry, but it’s gay Trump supporters who should be embarrassed. He’s straight-up said he’d appoint justices to SCOTUS that are in the Scalia mold, and overturn Obergefell. Though there are hundreds of other reasons, that one alone should disqualify him from the gay vote.
truckproductions
Uhhhh Steve Schmidt is NOT anti gay.. in fact he excoriates fellow republicans for being so slow to evolve on gay issues. He’s publicly said their unwillingness to move on from gay issues is the driving force for sinking republican numbers. He’s also a regular on Maddow’s show speaking about gay related issues. Seriously, did u fact check your theory before posting this?
joeyty
@James: I used to think the gay Hillary supporters should be embarrassed because of her ties to Muslim homophobes in a zillion different ways (including plans to import three million more refugees into the U.S.) but now I’m realizing nobody should be embarrassed. Everybody is just making the choice he thinks will be the less dangerous to any gay future. Let’s just hope whoever wins the election really IS the best.
Well265
Confusing article. If anything, I’d be shocked if the antigay right didn’t dump Trump, because Trump’s socially liberal and mostly indifferent to LGBT. Trump said Kim Davis should do her job.
Trump’s not a pandering parasite like Hillary, but I haven’t heard him condemn LGBT as Hillary and Obama have (until it was profitable for them to stop), or reduce the LGBT experience to a leather fetish like Hillary did.
Everyone’s familiar with Isaiah 45:1 aren’t they? I heard a conservative rabbi speaking this way of Trump.
Heywood Jablowme
@joeyty: You mention Hillary’s supposed “plans to import three million more refugees into the U.S.”
Three million? I’ve asked you this before, I think you didn’t bother to answer (or perhaps I missed it when the article moved to p. 2), but CITATION PLEASE. Where the hell did Hillary say that? I think you might have even used a different figure before. Are you just making stuff up, or what?
Heywood Jablowme
@truckproductions: I agree, Steve Schmidt shouldn’t be on this list or described as “anti-gay.” I’ve seen him speak in the way you describe, saying the Republicans’ nutty anti-gay obsession is a major cause of what’s sinking them.
(For readers who are more entertainment-oriented than political, Schmidt was played by Woody Harrelson in the amusing HBO movie “Game Change” about Sarah Palin.)
GayEGO
@Kangol: Isn’t it called BreitButt? :>)
joeyty
@Heywood Jablowme: No, no citation.
batesmotel
Yes it is interesting that right wingers are moving over to Hillary while many lefts are moving to Trump. I’ve never seen or heard of so many democrats siding with a republican candidate. They must be business owners who Trump will no doing support over Hillary.
Heywood Jablowme
@joeyty: So stop saying it.
joeyty
@Heywood Jablowme: No, because it is true. I’m just saying I don’t have a citation or link or anything here.
joeyty
@batesmotel: The thing is….Hillary lies! They’re such blatant lies that one feels like she’s been so long in politics that she doesn’t even realize how much she’s lying anymore. To actually insult our intelligence with the hokey story of the woman with the adopted son who saw Trump on TV and asked, “Mommy, will he send me back to Ethiopia if he wins?” What does she think, we’re all easily emotionally-manipulated children? Trump might be crass and vulgar but he seems so much more honest. (This is just my own opinion and impressions….nothing more).
Heywood Jablowme
@joeyty: But 3 million is NOT true, or anywhere close to being true. Obama at one point (over a year ago) proposed a figure of 10,000 Syrian refugees. That’s about 1/3 of 1% of your imaginary figure! Even the 10,000 idea was met with howls of protest so was lowered.
At any rate, you are apparently unaware that the U.S. government has for decades had an official ceiling on how many refugees from all countries can be let in per year. Guess what the official ceiling is?: 70,000! Back during the Bosnian wars in the ’90s it was quite a bit higher, but was never anywhere near 200,000, never mind 3 million.
And you say Hillary lies! If you don’t have a citation, where did you GET this imaginary crap about 3 million?
Heywood Jablowme
@joeyty: Correction, sorry: Obama has more recently suggested a figure of 110,000 (still not gonna happen, even if the Democrats take Congress). It’s a negotiating point.
Do you really think Hillary wants 28 TIMES MORE of them than the Obama administration does? Why do you think that? Did you hear that lie on Fox News once and it stuck in your mind?
By the way the ENTIRE population of Syria is about 18 million.
Ukin Blome
@joeyty: How do you live with yourself?
joeyty
@Heywood Jablowme: Well…..you also suggest people use superhero nightlights to keep evil away. Yes, Hillary claims she’ll let that many in. But I do admit she might be lying about that, too, just for the votes. Or she might change her mind once she’s in there because she doesn’t want another Rotherham rapes on her watch making her look bad. (If Hillary DOES become President, at least she’ll be under intense pressure not to screw up…). I don’t watch Fox News.
joeyty
@Heywood Jablowme: Seriously…it still astounds me that any gay man would support these 1 percenters who, though excusing Bill making fat girls blow him in the Oval office, think gays matter so little that incidents like the Neighbors Nightclub in Seattle being set afire is an acceptable risk. BUT…I’m not going to judge. You guys think Trump’s VP and Supreme Court choices are the bigger danger, and maybe YOU’RE right and I’m the wrong one here.
Heywood Jablowme
@joeyty: “Yes, Hillary claims she’ll let that many in.” No she doesn’t and never did. Prove it. Hey bud, I’ve been doing YOUR work for you trying to find any citation for that.
Your numbers don’t add up. The population of Syria is only 18 million to begin with and there probably aren’t even close to a million Syrian refugees in all of Europe, Turkey and Jordan combined. Where did you come up with 3 million? That’s crazy. Either you heard it from a delusional right-wing source, OR you simply MADE IT UP.
Btw I tried to post citations but Queerty’s erratic system didn’t want to post it. One was from the Guardian, the lefty UK paper, admonishing Americans (tsk tsk) to take in 110,000 refugees. That’s arguable and even I don’t agree. But that’s the REAL figure being discussed, NOT 3,000,000 which is just nuts. Hillary never said it and if you can’t prove it, stop saying it!
joeyty
@Heywood Jablowme: ““Yes, Hillary claims she’ll let that many in.” No she doesn’t and never did. Prove it. Hey bud, I’ve been doing YOUR work for you trying to find any citation for that.” It’s gotta be there. Keep trying. (Maybe she’s hiding those statements now or something…) Nightlights…lol.
joeyty
@Heywood Jablowme: It COULD be 300,000 she intends to let sweep in here, but….imagine how many gays THEY could kill, even at that number ?
joeyty
@Heywood Jablowme: The UK will be under Shariah Law soon, so….their admonishments don’t matter. Will the U.S. accept gay UK British refugees when that happens ?
Heywood Jablowme
@joeyty: “The UK will be under Sharia Law soon….” Oh please.
“It’s gotta be there. Keep trying.” Dude, I’ve done enough of YOUR work for you. If you say you don’t watch Fox News, okay, and if you didn’t get 3 million from any other right-wing source, okay. But that’s not better. In that case the problem is… you simply made it up (i.e. you’re LYING) and that’s not better.
joeyty
@Heywood Jablowme: You probably didn’t even look. You and your…superhero nightlights. The day you or Hillary or the cowardly Guardian stops trying to hide from (or purposely ignoring) this will be the day I’ll just barely consider changing my mind. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3825696/Islamic-hate-preacher-called-gay-men-beheaded-teaching-children-young-six-school-London.html
Ukin Blome
@joeyty: Not a single original comment. It’s like you’re a human mimeograph machine. Every comment is the same comment rolled out on the page. Well, nothing more to read here.
joeyty
@Ukin Blome: Of course it’s the same. When the story hasn’t changed out there, why should I change my report ?
Ukin Blome
No wait, are you saying Steve Schmidt isn’t Gay or at least Bisexual? Say it aint so. My gaydar can’t be that broken. Such a mistake is enough to cause me to dig myself back into the ground and hibernate for a few hundred more years. Get my fainting couch.
Stilinski26
So these anti-gay republicans hates Trump its like you are telling gays to vote for Trump lmao
1EqualityUSA
I’ve been up in the mountains. A lot Trump stickers and signs. The cable service up there only allows Faux Noise and nothing else. I called to ask if it was possible to get MSNBC and they said. “if enough people request it, it might happen.” The Tedious Right paying cable companies a stipend to suppress more liberal views crossed me mind. I googled their business, a cable company that we’ve been using since the late sixties and it looked like a one-room shack from the gold rush. Some these pro-Trump commenters may have come from these low-information areas in the United Snakes(?) Trump is bug-in-jar disgusting. He will lose.
1EqualityUSA
Steve Schmidt has what appears to be an “X” carved into his beard, left side of face, near his mandibular angle.. Sometimes it is there and sometimes it isn’t. It baffles me.
Heywood Jablowme
@joeyty: “When the story hasn’t changed out there…”
Out there? Great, so you didn’t hear it on Fox News or any other right wing source, and you didn’t make it up out of thin air, you just heard it “out there” at some point? You sound like Trump when he says “Many people are saying….”
Heywood Jablowme
@1EqualityUSA: In a fit of mama-grizzly rage, Sarah Palin clawed Steve’s face in 2008. 🙂
Hermes
@joeyty: Jeb Bush said that he would attend one or witness it if asked. Hillary certainly would. George HW Bush was signatory together with Barbara on a gay wedding in Maine. Vice President Biden used the authority of his office to perform one.
Marriage equality is not really an elite issue one way or another, most of them don’t care – and the victory among the rest of us is clearly now won by the pro-equality side – and among the younger set by an overwhelming margin.

Mr. Jablowme, thanks.
joeyty
@Hermes: Yes, those are good points.
joeyty
@Heywood Jablowme: “Great, so you didn’t hear it on Fox News or any other right wing source, and you didn’t..” The article on the imam’s instructions on killing gays is from Dailymail UK, not Fox News.
Heywood Jablowme
@joeyty: I meant your theory about Hillary and the imaginary “3 million” of course. But of course you change the subject again.
joeyty
@Heywood Jablowme: Maybe I was mistakenly writing 3 million, I probably meant 300,000. Which is a little less bad.
